Will Devon & Cornwall be ok to go to in July?

We are in a real dilemma.. We have to pay the balance on our holiday in the next couple of weeks which is about another £800 on top of the £400 deposit already paid.

We've gone for a self catering holiday flat on the Devon / Cornwall border for last week of June /
first week in July.

Don't really want to go if the touristy places we'd usually go to aren't open but our holiday company are only offering a reschedule so will lose our money if we cancel. We have a family wedding next year (hopefully) so we don't want to rebook.

We were pretty sure we'd still be in lockdown and be able to get a refund but now that the new rules are in place, I don't know if we are or aren't allowed to go.

AIBU to think we should be able to get our deposit back?

tollergirl have you seen Bait?

Hingeandbracket · 14/05/2020 14:26

@Tollergirl
Last holiday in Cornwall, Mum and 2 kids. Walking along minding our own business, called "FUCKIN EMMETS" by abusive intimidating males coming the other way.
You can say they are the minority - evidently true, but the truth is, I haven't been abused like that for being a tourist anywhere else.
There are plenty of nice places to go, Cornwall is off my list.

ITonyah · 14/05/2020 14:26

Well there's always outliers!

At the moment tourists aren't allowed, we will see what happens in July.

understandmenow · 14/05/2020 14:26

@Tollergirl just going by what one of your "locals" said, it seemed pretty OTT, but they were confirming that it happens, along with signs in the windows etc.

ITonyah · 14/05/2020 14:27

fuckin emmets

😂

Tollergirl · 14/05/2020 14:28

@Hingeandbracket- that must have been upsetting I appreciate but it would be like me saying I wouldn't return to Spain because I was assaulted by a Spanish man. I don't assume that all Spanish are violent robbing bastards.

Hingeandbracket · 14/05/2020 14:28

Lucky for me I can choose not to darken Cornwall's door again.

Tollergirl · 14/05/2020 14:29

@ITonyah - no I haven't but understand it's very good.

BiggestJulie · 14/05/2020 14:30

I haven’t read the full thread, and I see it has gone off on many tangents, but as per your original dilemma:

You should definitely pay the balance. If you don’t, you will be deemed to have cancelled the holiday, yourself, and not entitled to deposit fefund. Instead, you need to force the provider to cancel. You are not obliged to accept a re-schedule if that is not convenient. If they cannot provide the accomodation you have paid for, then they have to refund you.

If the local areas and attractions that you would like to visit are closed, it is extremely likely that your holiday accomodation will also be closed.

The general legal advice is definitely pay the balance and force them to cancel.

Admittedly, the situation is if the accomodation is actually open and you simply prefer not to go (because other stuff is closed) then you lose more money (the deposit plus the balance). But if you cancel now, and don’t want to rebook, it is unlikely that you have any right to a return of the balance. So you do have to weigh the possibilities.

justasking111 · 14/05/2020 14:30

FGS in Wales 66 in icu 600 in hospital, yep tourists will be back, if the cornish cannot keep themselves safe, gloves, social distancing, as we will do in Wales, you really need better education in schools.

Daffodil101 · 14/05/2020 14:30

I’d love to know what you’re going to shout?!

Look, I was going to France and now I’m not. I’m secretly relieved. My husband is a sun worshipper and I’m a Cornwall worshipper, so for once I win, and when he moans about the weather, I can ignore him and remind him that if it wasn’t for my quick thinking and rapid cancellation, he’d currently be walking around the south of France asking me to translate what they are shouting at him.

At least in Cornwall he can translate for himself.

On a more serious note, if there is a second lockdown, we will be prevented from travelling. Quite rightly. And then we will come back next year. However, we are both NHS, DH consultant in intensive care, and to be honest, After what we’ve been through, I’d rather have something to look forward to (knowing it may not go ahead) than to take a defeatist and depressing view that the whole year is cancelled.

ITonyah · 14/05/2020 14:30

Those blokes were English, not Cornish (whether they like that or not!). Are you avoiding England for your holiday?

I was mugged in London seven years ago. I still go to London.

Hingeandbracket · 14/05/2020 14:31

I don't assume that all Spanish are violent robbing bastards.
I never suggested anything of the kind and that's ridiculous analogy.
I even acknowledged that in my post - obviously I didn't mention the more low level-stuff. It's just not a nice prospect, so I won't be rushing back, and that cohort that doesn't like me due to me be English/a tourist in Cornwall won't miss me.

ITonyah · 14/05/2020 14:32

I'm amazed you work in the NHS but still think its fine to go on holiday to a place with few cases just because you need a break. There are actual real people down here trying to live through a pandemic. It's not fucking Disneyland.

OrangeSamphire · 14/05/2020 14:33

France, Italy and Spain are meanwhile busying themselves for a summer season that may not happen. You don’t see this anger, resentment, insularity - which is classic Basil Fawlty.

This preparation is also happening in Cornwall @TatianaBis.

I'm also not sure where all these anti-tourist signs are supposed to be? I go near / cross the Tamar Bridge quite regularly and haven't seen a single one up and down the A38.

Daffodil101 · 14/05/2020 14:34

I’ve been to Cornwall most years since 1993. I’ve never, ever been treated badly. I’m assuming that the people waving pitchforks aren’t very bright and that some of the people on MN aren’t reflective of the largely lovely, civilised and welcoming Cornish folk I’ve met.

We are all British, not just residents of any one county m.

okycoky17 · 14/05/2020 14:36

@ITonyah - Tbh locals could torch tourists cars this summer and if the holiday cottages gave a discount next summer they'd be packed.

Wow. Just wow. You have revealed yourself. I hope I never have the misfortune to hand over any of my hard-earned money to any business or tourist enterprise that people with opinions like yours may own or run.

Don't moan or whinge that your local economy suffers - it will be as a result of comments like these, not a pandemic.

Daffodil101 · 14/05/2020 14:36

Ooh I love the Tamar bridge! Haven’t been over it for years but planning a detour this year to show the children the Brunel Bridge.

ITonyah · 14/05/2020 14:37

No, it won't. It will be because there's a pandemic.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 14/05/2020 14:39

Good one - the economy will suffer because of anonymous mumsnet commentors, not a global pandemic Grin

The proof of the pudding will be if our local pubs & restaurants open up again - will the locals still stay away?
I sure as hell won't.

Daffodil101 · 14/05/2020 14:40

It’s a clever pandemic that stops buying ice cream on the beach.

What flavour ice cream do pandemics favour? A hope pandemics don’t drop litter.

Daffodil101 · 14/05/2020 14:41

(Local pubs for local people)

okycoky17 · 14/05/2020 14:42

@Ihaventgottimeforthis - You're assuming that people's memories are short then.

OrangeSamphire · 14/05/2020 14:43

It's fab isn't it @Daffodil101!

I do miss crossing the Brunel bridge on the train, and going over the St German's viaduct on my way home from trips up country for work.

Tollergirl · 14/05/2020 14:44

@Hingeandbracket- I don't see why it's ridiculous when you have said that "Cornwall" is unwelcoming to tourists rather than there are a few random twats in Cornwall who like to provoke a reaction by being rude to tourists.

@Daffodil101 - I hope you make it and enjoy your holiday. My DP works at Treliske and it's true that at the moment they haven't been as badly hit as they were expecting but that's not to say they can relax quite yet.

I really do not get the sense that people in Cornwall hate tourists and think this is a narrative stirred up by social media and a few reactionary idiots. I think you will probably find them everywhere not just in Cornwall.

@justasking111 - in case you hadn't heard my kids haven't been at school since March and unlikely that they will be back at school until September so not sure what you mean? Can you really say that everyone in Wales will be safe because they have gloves?
