Will Devon & Cornwall be ok to go to in July?

We are in a real dilemma.. We have to pay the balance on our holiday in the next couple of weeks which is about another £800 on top of the £400 deposit already paid.

We've gone for a self catering holiday flat on the Devon / Cornwall border for last week of June /
first week in July.

Don't really want to go if the touristy places we'd usually go to aren't open but our holiday company are only offering a reschedule so will lose our money if we cancel. We have a family wedding next year (hopefully) so we don't want to rebook.

We were pretty sure we'd still be in lockdown and be able to get a refund but now that the new rules are in place, I don't know if we are or aren't allowed to go.

AIBU to think we should be able to get our deposit back?

I don’t go through the centre of London when I travel via Heathrow or Gatwick. We stay in hotels next to the airports.Dont use public transport. Why would we take a detour through the centre of London

Heathrow is in London Confused so if you go to Heathrow you’re travelling through London.

Jeffersona · 14/05/2020 13:40

*I would get on a plane if the government of both countries allowed it!

I'd take the precautions I felt necessary and go.

What makes you think that people wouldn't?*

People need to show consideration for starters. And what happened to don't go where you're not wanted?

Ultimately the government have to do what they can to keep the economy running, which will include relaxing measures slowly but surely, but it's relying on people being fair to others.

I remember just as the UK locked down in March hordes and hordes of people headed for the beaches and tourist hotspots and the government had to amend its message so people wouldn't do this.

The government issue guidance but then are constantly caught on the hop by unintended consequences of human behaviour.

Tourists are very much wanted in Italy, speak for yourself.

Jeffersona · 14/05/2020 13:46

@TatianaBis I'm talking about Cornwall specifically, who explicitly don't want tourists at the moment.

understandmenow · 14/05/2020 13:47

As stated by previous PP, Spain and Portugal do want tourists, yes I'd go there!

I wouldn't go to Cornwall, but others would! Not because the Cornish have "told me not too" with their signs in the windows and they're shouting at non locals, I'd shout right back and put them firmly in their place for that little town antic.

TatianaBis · 14/05/2020 13:50

You cannot speak for a whole county. Everyone whose job is dependent on tourism needs tourists to survive.

The anxious, insular, resentful few do not speak for everyone.

understandmenow · 14/05/2020 13:51

Not everyone in Cornwall @Jeffersona, you think the casual summer labour at the holiday parks don't want tourists?

You think the holiday cottages and air b&b don't want tourists?

You cannot speak for the entire population of tourists!

Jeffersona · 14/05/2020 13:53

Not much of a holiday is it being shouted at, arguing with locals and walks around the town with signs everywhere telling you to go home?

If a second peak occurs through June-August then holidays need to be sacrificed. Whether it's piling into airports/Eurostar to go to Europe, or everyone descending on the coastal areas of the UK

chocolatviennois · 14/05/2020 13:54

@Polar0pposite if you are still planning to take flights I think you are more likely to spread covid than someone who has been following social distancing getting in their car and driving to a self catering holiday in the west country.
All the evidence shows that covid has been spread where large numbers of people have been in confined spaces indoors.

understandmenow · 14/05/2020 13:54

@Jeffersona as below it really won't be all of them 🙄

ITonyah · 14/05/2020 13:54

She said central London. Heathrow isn't central London

Jeffersona · 14/05/2020 13:56

@understandmenow No it wouldn't but if i'm on holiday I want to feel welcome

understandmenow · 14/05/2020 13:56

@ITonyah good job you've got the geography covered! So can tourists flock to non central Cornwall?

understandmenow · 14/05/2020 13:57

We're all different and on all holidays you're going to meet some miserable Tucker @Jeffersona! Like I say lots of people won't be unwelcoming, especially the holiday parks, they'll be pleased to have the £££s.

IvinghoeBeacon · 14/05/2020 14:01

“ If a second peak occurs through June-August then holidays need to be sacrificed. ”

In which case I imagine the govt will continue restrictions, accommodation owners will be able to refund and cancel and everyone is satisfied. No need for hostile environment for would-be tourists

R is currently higher in the South West than London!

Daffodil101 · 14/05/2020 14:06

I can’t believe people think Cornwall will be closed if Europe is open.

Only on mumsnet!

Legoandloldolls · 14/05/2020 14:06

I think if it was anywhere else in the UK and you really was ok with nothing being open then I would go. But being stuck in anywhere in the UK sounds like my idea of hell on earth.

As its Cornwall I wouldnt go. Being shouted at in the street would be very harmful to your children.

I normally holiday in the SW for at least two weekends a year. I am not planning on going this year or next when there are seaside towns in the counties bordering mine. Or I will return to my old haunts where I grew up in Kent. It's more of a melting pot in Kent and really not snobby in any way. Lots of Londoners holiday in Kent so no one would notice or care where your from.

Daffodil101 · 14/05/2020 14:14

I’m looking forward to knowing what those lovely, civilised Cornish people will be shouting at us on the street. Because they are by and large a lovely bunch, not prone to hysteria or antisocial behaviour and welcoming of tourists.

I’m not sure what they’d be shouting? Or where they would be standing?

Shall I keep a lookout on the A30 around Temple, or just wait until I drive into St Ives? Will they be on bridges over the A roads or just walking amongst us in the art galleries (wearing tasteful Cath kidston masks)?

Maybe in the aisles of Marks and Spencer at Hayle roundabout?

How will they know I’m a tourist? I can do a cracking Cornish accent, d’recktky. I even put the jam on before my cream, though I could fox them by putting the cream on first and they’d think I was from Devon.

Would it be ok if I was from Devon?

Inkpaperstars · 14/05/2020 14:16

I really feel for the residents of Cornwall and similar places. There will always be some who are just anti tourist at all times, but for most they are not damaging their local economy for fun. It must be awful to contemplate the damage to their local businesses but they are caught between a rock and a hard place because the threat of a surge in infection with an elderly population and scarce medical resources is terrifying.

justasking111 · 14/05/2020 14:19

If the dementors shout at you look confused and stammeringly reply non comprehende as often as it takes Grin

Tollergirl · 14/05/2020 14:20

@Legoandloldolls - yes you're right no Londoners ever holiday in Cornwall and if they do they have to wear a special hat to identify them as such. Plus all the locals are issues with megaphones on the last day of the school term so they can really shout at all the tourists in the street!!!!

ITonyah · 14/05/2020 14:20

Noone will be shouting at you in the street.

If there's no spike in cases then tourists will be welcomed back later in the summer. If there's a big spike in cases you'd be a bit nuts to go on holiday there and certainly won't be welcome, but the majority will just moan about you behind your back.

Tollergirl · 14/05/2020 14:23

Is it wrong that I'm getting quite excited about being able to shout at people in the street? After all, down here in deepest darkest Cornwall we have to make our own entertainment you know?

understandmenow · 14/05/2020 14:24

@Daffodil101 and @ITonyah someone on this thread that was a local was shouted at by another local ... because they did not recognise them!
