To go to Whitby beach tomorrow

BubblyBarbara · 12/05/2020 18:31

I’ve gone to Whitby every year for the past decade or so and I’m missing it dearly. I’ve read Boris’s PDF and it says you are allowed to drive any distance to “open space” from tomorrow so my plan is to go to Whitby and spend the day on the beach - social distancing of course.

But I did a search on Facebook about car parks etc (it’s ok the parking inspectors are furloughed so I can park anywhere I like) and found lots of angry posts on local groups about how the people of Whitby don’t want people coming into their town yet Confused

It’s legal for me to go tomorrow but the locals don’t want us to go.. who is BU here? I say the law is more important than what the locals say.

Check the council website for whether public toilets have reopened. N York moors public toilets and car parks reopen today

Sittingonthedockofthebay · 13/05/2020 18:27

50000 plus dead and you NEED to get to the beach because you're allowed because it's the law. I don't live in Whitby (thank heavens) but I wouldn't want anyone 'visiting' on a whim.

whostoletheeyeoutyourteddybear · 13/05/2020 18:28

@MilkTrayLimeBarrel in Scotland its going for a Jobbie or pee. Get a life miss prim lol

Madamum18 · 13/05/2020 18:28

I can understand the local perspective! If it was just you visiting fine but it won't be will it...every influx brings risk to locals and makers their going about their daily lives within lockdown more difficult.

I am stunned that the government has said it is ok to drive to beaches etc at this stage in their "road map". Madness"

LewScroose · 13/05/2020 18:29

I live in Whitstable, people here are very worried about infection rates increasing if the town is flooded with people again. We’ve only just been able to get out more ourselves and if there are hundreds more people it is going to make life quite difficult for local residents and people who have been shielding. As previous posters have said; just because you can doesn’t mean you should

justasking111 · 13/05/2020 18:31

I call bull on the RNLI they are still fully operational.

IggyAce · 13/05/2020 18:32

Whitby is a day trip for us and we are choosing to respect the locals wishes which means I won’t bother visiting until next year.

OrangeSamphire · 13/05/2020 18:33

No @justasking111, RNLI lifeguards are NOT working. At best they hope to have 30% of typically lifeguarded beaches covered this summer. At present there is NO lifeguard coverage at all.

Gothicashoker · 13/05/2020 18:41

Totally unfair, I live in Scarborough and we don't want tourists either, we need space to exercise too and if 5000 people rock up we can't and the council have closed all businesses along the sea fronts to close, no toilets open either! Stay home and keep others safe you can visit another time when there isn't a pandemic.

justasking111 · 13/05/2020 18:44

The lifeguards may not be but the boats and crew are. You do know that not all beaches are covered by rnli lifeguards in the UK? You are supposed to use common sense and be rescued by the inshore rnli if you are not. The RLI income was £192.1m last year. If they choose not to use life guards that is their choice. But the boats are still there.

Diva66 · 13/05/2020 18:46

YABU, unless you live in Whitby.

lucie82 · 13/05/2020 18:46

How far away do you live? Personally I wouldn’t go, I don’t think it’s worth it. Each to their own tho, it would appear nearly everyone on our street went out today! I believe a second wave is coming

BullshitVivienne · 13/05/2020 18:46

OP said she wasn't going to go.

BullshitVivienne · 13/05/2020 18:46

Also this thread was posted yesterday evening.

Ang17 · 13/05/2020 18:48

YABU

Just because it's legal it doesn't make it morally right. People living in these types of areas risk having their 'home' swamped with tourists. Imagine how you would feel if someone set up camp on public land in front of your home. It would be legal but you wouldn't want it.

As an NHS worker, personally I think the release in lockdown is too much too soon and I will not be changing my habits until I see that figures are still dropping.

No offence, just my opinion.

Twigletgirl27 · 13/05/2020 18:51

OP I live probably a 2 hour drive from Whitby and out local BBC news tonight is asking people specifically NOT to go to Whitby and other seaside resorts. Please wait.

OrangeSamphire · 13/05/2020 18:53

Yes @justasking111, I live on a beach that isn't lifeguarded! And half a mile along the stretch from a beach that IS normally lifeguarded.

I also am lucky enough to count the RNLI as a client so I do know what I'm talking about.

Lifeguards are the primary rescue service on the UK's beaches. And at the moment, they aren't there.

skyblu · 13/05/2020 18:59

YABU got not using your common sense.
You are wanting to just go ahead and do what YOU want.
You have no NEED to go to Whitby.

You’re not there anyway, so stopping by the beach whilst there.
Yes the “rules” are vague. They have to be.
We have to RELY on adult human beings using their common sense.

If you want, you can walk through a deep, dark forest on your own at midnight. Law says you can if you want.
Do you?

bigmumsymcgraw · 13/05/2020 19:06

Yes you swan off to the beach. All us key workers will go to work and ensure all your needs are met upon your return.

jakkijax · 13/05/2020 19:06

Thanks x

MuthaClucker · 13/05/2020 19:06

Why aren't people reading the OP's (pretend) updates?

SapphosRock · 13/05/2020 19:07

Interested where people planning day trips to the seaside plan to use the toilet? No public toilets or cafes are open...

MuthaClucker · 13/05/2020 19:11

I'm going nowhere, haven't even been to my wheelie bin for near on eight weeks, but if I was, the toilet thing wouldn't bother me one bit.

Go before we set off, drink what, one bottle of water (no cafes open), couple of hours out, go home. Wee in own toilet.

Harls1969 · 13/05/2020 19:11

Got another Bank Holiday coming up. We all know what's going to happen don't we Shock

Me too @SapphosRock! Obv if the surf improves, surfers will just have a wetsuit wee, but walkers and picnickers... well, there's nowhere here at the moment. And the beach is overlooked by houses all the way down so nowhere to have a quiet wild wee. Not that you should on the beach anyway...!
