To go to Whitby beach tomorrow

BubblyBarbara · 12/05/2020 18:31

I’ve gone to Whitby every year for the past decade or so and I’m missing it dearly. I’ve read Boris’s PDF and it says you are allowed to drive any distance to “open space” from tomorrow so my plan is to go to Whitby and spend the day on the beach - social distancing of course.

But I did a search on Facebook about car parks etc (it’s ok the parking inspectors are furloughed so I can park anywhere I like) and found lots of angry posts on local groups about how the people of Whitby don’t want people coming into their town yet Confused

It’s legal for me to go tomorrow but the locals don’t want us to go.. who is BU here? I say the law is more important than what the locals say.

OP posts:

I would be really pissed off if people started rocking up in our village for a day out because driving for a walk is ok now! No actually, its not ok. So your missing the beach? Yea, you and everyone else love. Suck it up and wait a few more weeks. Glad I live in Scotland.

TheBigFatMermaid · 13/05/2020 17:36

I live in a seaside town. Yes, the local economy relies on tourism and usually tourists are welcome.

Not at the moment though, we don't want randoms potentially bringing Covid into our community.

GrapefruitGin · 13/05/2020 17:38

Did OP go?

Harls1969 · 13/05/2020 17:40

Where will you go to the loo? I'm assuming public toilets are still shut? Confused

LovelyIssues · 13/05/2020 17:40

It's not against the law so why not

BunsyGirl · 13/05/2020 17:42

Are you sure that you will be able to park? I read earlier that the car parks in Southend will open later this week. However, they aren’t at the moment. Even when they do, the Council is asking people to stay away.

Shell4429 · 13/05/2020 17:43

YABU to trust the government. It’s too soon. I don’t plan to go anywhere until it’s all over except shopping and meds. Of course the people of Whitby don’t want you there, they’re fearful, and with good reason.

Although Boris is trying to open everything back up in stages, this virus is still very far from being over. The more traffic on the road, the more chance of rta more strain on the NHS. We are all responsible to play our part. Personally I don't think an hours drive is acceptable. There will be a lot of people in whitby who will be going out for their daily exercise and the more people that are there the harder it is to social distance. Just because we can do stuff doesn't mean we should. We are still trying to keep the curve down. All of this will stop again if the numbers spike again. We are still getting 3000+ new cases every day. That is a lot more then when we even went into lock down. Same for deaths its still a lot higher then it was when we went into lockdown. I'm definitely not looking to rush back to busy places even if my heart is screaming to get back to the beach.

Usecoooomonsnse · 13/05/2020 17:44

@BubblyBarbara before going anywhere please watch both Part 1 & Part 2 :

Everyone please take care.

DanceItOut · 13/05/2020 17:44

I mean there’s no legal reason not to so I guess you aren’t being unreasonable. Depending on distance though...I mean I probably wouldn’t travel more than 30 minutes drive away in the next week or so and then maybe up it to places within an hour etc.

nuitdesetoiles · 13/05/2020 17:46

YANBU, go and be sensible....if it's just for a couple of hours the likelihood you'll need to go to their hospital is highly unlikely. Beginning to hate all this "just for the locals" stuff I'm seeing everywhere. It makes me not want to go and spend my cash when this is over, Cornwall especially.

I live in a big vibrant city...don't dare come here from out of town when this is done going to gig venues, shops, museums, sport stadiums, concert halls and theatres! Stick to the countryside only bumpkins! Clearly I don't actually think that, everyone is welcome...All of the time.

lindyloo57 · 13/05/2020 17:48

I agree with knucklehead .101

TheMotherofAllDilemmas · 13/05/2020 17:48

The fact we have an idiotic PM doesn’t mean small communities need to be overwhelmed by visitors. I wouldn’t go because it is disconsiderate to the people who live there.

I also expect they will be trying to protect themselves from such influx by closing down car parks and more crucially, toilets.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 13/05/2020 17:48

I would have more sympathy if the locals were saying 'please remember there aren't any toilets so only come for a short time' / 'please bring your own food' / 'please avoid the narrow streets where you can't socially distance', but all this 'fuck off it's OUR beach' to people who could be planning nothing more than a quick stroll and paddle which would not put anyone at risk, is pretty unpleasant.

IrishNinja · 13/05/2020 17:49

Sure someone has already said this but legally ynbu. However I'd stay away (for now) as firstly the locals very much want you to. But mainly as I think a lot of people will have similar ideas and it'll be nigh on impossible to social distance. Whitby isn't going anywhere, just give it a bit longer.

Krrissy · 13/05/2020 17:51

I certainly get where youre comnig from, however I think its early days yet and I think we should respect other peoples communities for now. folk are still very nervous and scared, theres been no major changes with this awful virus yet, and until there is, Id just ask yourself if its really a neccessity. We should all consider the travel distance too, we all think were good drivers, but the more on the road, the more accidents, that wont help our NHS will it. I think travellig to see a loved one, is more a priority now than a trip to a beach out of area...sorry, I know thats probably not what you wann to hear. I live in Cumbria, we were 2nd to London with the outbreak, esculated by so many visitors up here prior to lock down...maybe that will help explain folks being wary of another spike, folk are really scared not selfish. You can make this trip lawfully, just ask your conciense. Stay safe

GrapefruitGin · 13/05/2020 17:51

Guys this post was created yesterday so it’s too late now! I’d like to now if OP went or not.

CarrieBlue · 13/05/2020 17:52

..if it's just for a couple of hours the likelihood you'll need to go to their hospital is highly unlikely

It’s not about the OP needing an itu bed in the local hospital, it’s about the local residents (usually elderly in seaside towns like Whitby) who will be infected by large numbers of unnecessary tourists flooding the town who will need more of them than are available.

OrangeSamphire · 13/05/2020 17:53

I think that is exactly what people in beachside communities have been saying on this thread, Countess. That there are no toilets open, limited food options and narrow streets.

Haven't seen anyone say 'fuck off it's our beach'.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 13/05/2020 17:56

The majority of posts are not saying 'only come if you can be responsible', OrangeSamphire, they're saying don't come at all.

whostoletheeyeoutyourteddybear · 13/05/2020 17:57

Thank god I live in Scotland and we have a true leader up here. #staysafeandstayhome
Boris is a joke!

eeyore228 · 13/05/2020 17:58

I love comments like ‘we haven’t got the virus’ like this means it’s ok to travel an hour for some beach time. YOU may not but YOU could catch it whilst there from one of the others who think just like you. Someone who is a carrier and doesn’t know it. Then you can pass it on to others when you get back home.

Carriecakes80 · 13/05/2020 17:59

Well, all the idiots that want to beach it tomorrow are bloody selfish. My Mum lives in a seaside town, and since VE day there have already been folk turning up and parking down their road and taking over the beach. And if they're daft enough to think they can already start holidaying, they will use the local shops too, and thus the infection spreads more.
Me and my lot could go to the Beach, we have our car, be nice to drive and see my Mum, take my four kids out, but nope. I'm not going to listen to Boris's waffling rubbish. I actually care about people and will be staying home, will play with the kids in our local field, and try to think of others.

ButteryPuffin · 13/05/2020 17:59

Why not wait another month or two till things may be better and more places open? Why does it have to be now?

Nik2015 · 13/05/2020 18:00

I’d love to go to a beach, but no toilet facility would put me off!
