To go to Whitby beach tomorrow

BubblyBarbara · 12/05/2020 18:31

I’ve gone to Whitby every year for the past decade or so and I’m missing it dearly. I’ve read Boris’s PDF and it says you are allowed to drive any distance to “open space” from tomorrow so my plan is to go to Whitby and spend the day on the beach - social distancing of course.

But I did a search on Facebook about car parks etc (it’s ok the parking inspectors are furloughed so I can park anywhere I like) and found lots of angry posts on local groups about how the people of Whitby don’t want people coming into their town yet Confused

It’s legal for me to go tomorrow but the locals don’t want us to go.. who is BU here? I say the law is more important than what the locals say.

I will go to my local beach. Not this week but sometime soon. It is a 20 minute drive away and absolutely my local area. Not walkable unless I fancied a hike but definitely a local drive.
I have been on this beach spending money in the restaurants, coffee shops, pubs all of my life. I can understand that the immediate locals don't want me back until businesses open again and I can spend money, but I will be socially distancing in a very large, wide area. I won't be taking up pavement room in the town because there is nowhere open. If I had cv or had a heart attack I would be carted off the exactly the same hospital that I would use at home, so I am not using up 'their' nhs facilities.People from the area drive to 'my' shopping area because of more choice creating more queues and people breathing on me. It's fine, It's not my shop and I don't police who can come. Similarly the beaches and beauty spots belong to us all. Of course it is far more pleasant for immediate locals to have deserted beaches while all the local businesses are shut but there are many people in the local area who pay their council tax to the same area who have been deprived of the beauty of their area for a long time now. Maybe Boris should have put a limit on how far people can travel. Maybe 10/20 miles? But I don't know how that would be policed.

The worst thing you can do is ask Mumsnet, who are the most politically correct sub-section of humankind. Just go.

monkeysox · 12/05/2020 20:49

@FliesandPies
Don't be a dick. What if you need a shit

Is that the new official slogan?

Yes they can use it. People might actually listen.

famousforwrongreason · 12/05/2020 20:49

I want to go to whitby because I always go.

You haven't always been in the epicentre of a fucking pandemic have you?
Get a grip.
I hate people sometimes.

Poetryinaction · 12/05/2020 20:49

Go. Enjoy.

TheoriginalLEM · 12/05/2020 20:51

The trouble is, everyone will flock to the same place. I'm in a popular seaside town in the south east and normally love the energy the DFLs bring, but not all at once, which is what is going to be the issue this weekend.

I immediately thought, oooh, we can go to broadstairs but actually no thanks, like ops said, everything will be closed and the world and his wife will go - I'll wait

Whenwillthisbeover · 12/05/2020 20:51

The rules say you can, personally I wouldn’t. I expect it will be busy.

HavenDilemma · 12/05/2020 20:55

@MarieQueenofScots You don’t own the road outside of your house HmmHmmHmmBiscuit

MarieQueenofScots · 12/05/2020 20:57

HavenDilemma

I literally do Grin

Sandybval · 12/05/2020 20:57

Yes you can go. But as people will be weeing and shitting in public because there are no loos, and some research has shown that covid is likely present in poo; I wouldn't. Oh and the locals might want to actually have room to walk around rather than either be trapped indoors. All being well you will be able to go soon without having to squat in a bush.

HavenDilemma · 12/05/2020 20:57

@monkeysox Don't be a dick. What if you need a shit

Wow. Aren’t you feminine & graceful Hmm

LemonyCupcake · 12/05/2020 20:58

@rosiejaune omg tell me you are tongue in cheek?

This is a local beach for local people

pirateparker · 12/05/2020 20:58

Please please don’t go. Why be so selfish at this awful time? The locals won’t thank you for it at all.

Maryann1975 · 12/05/2020 20:58

I think it is absolutely shameful that we, as a nation, apparently need to be told that day trips to the beach in the midst of a global pandemic that has killed many thousands, aren't essential
^this^

I am still wondering which muppet wrote Boris’ speech on Sunday and then again on Monday. Who proofread and passed it acceptable. The whole lot of them should be sacked. I had hoped Boris would have a bit more sympathy after ending up in hospital, but either he has a short memory or he wasn’t ill enough to be seriously worried he would die from it.

Everyone is desperate to get out and have a break from this mundane, boring existence we have at the moment. The difference between op and I, is that I am not willing to be so selfish as to put others in danger by flocking to a tourist hot spot at the first opportunity. I would be so embarrassed to tell my friends that’s what we had done. Just because BoJo says it’s legal, doesn’t mean you have to do it.

Pixxie7 · 12/05/2020 20:59

I can see your logic, however on Saturday the beach near me was completely overtaken by day trippers. As a consequence local people could not socially distance. Additionally the local council is considering closing the beaches. So my advice would be to see how it goes.

cyclingmad · 12/05/2020 20:59

End of the day the new guidance is out and you allowed to travel any distance so thats all there is to say on the matter. Keep your distance enjoy your time and ignore any locals getting angry.

HavenDilemma · 12/05/2020 20:59

@BubblyBarbara OP, the locals do not own the beach. Enjoy your day out! 🏖🍦

Cherrysoup · 12/05/2020 21:01

Unfair to drive that far, unfair to add to the population. Your desire to go to the beach does not outweigh keeping others and yourself safe. I’d say it’s selfish, just my opinion, plus you’re dreaming re traffic. I have to travel for 15 minutes a day for animal welfare reasons and the traffic is almost what I’d call normal down an A road off the M1.

YouCannotBeeSerious · 12/05/2020 21:01

Define local....

Living within 1, 2, 5, 10 miles etc ?

LellyMcKelly · 12/05/2020 21:01

Is this a wind up? Jesus H Christ. Why would you do that?

MarieQueenofScots · 12/05/2020 21:01

No comment @HavenDilemma? You know what they say about people who make assumptions.... Grin

monkeysox · 12/05/2020 21:02

@HavenDilemma men use this site too.
Everyone shits male and female.
Shock value needed to get idiots to stay at home.
Middlesbrough has one of highest rates of cv so straight talking is needed.

HavenDilemma · 12/05/2020 21:02

@MarieQueenofScots No, you ‘literally’ do not! If you need to put your car there to stop people parking there, then it’s clearly a public road!

LemonyCupcake · 12/05/2020 21:02

@Maryann1975 we are now in next the phase where it’s not just essential travel
