To go to Whitby beach tomorrow

BubblyBarbara · 12/05/2020 18:31

I’ve gone to Whitby every year for the past decade or so and I’m missing it dearly. I’ve read Boris’s PDF and it says you are allowed to drive any distance to “open space” from tomorrow so my plan is to go to Whitby and spend the day on the beach - social distancing of course.

But I did a search on Facebook about car parks etc (it’s ok the parking inspectors are furloughed so I can park anywhere I like) and found lots of angry posts on local groups about how the people of Whitby don’t want people coming into their town yet Confused

It’s legal for me to go tomorrow but the locals don’t want us to go.. who is BU here? I say the law is more important than what the locals say.

No, you ‘literally’ do not! If you need to put your car there to stop people parking there, then it’s clearly a public road!

No. It isn’t. I mean mate, who is more likely to know my deeds - the person who owns the house or a none entity on a forum Grin

I own the road outside my house. I pay for maintenance thereof. I have to stop people parking there because they’re too stupid to read the very clear signs and look at the very clear marking on the road.

I'm not Whitby but I am about 90 minutes from Central London. Seventy from the western suburbs. We already have trouble with wandering tourists who can't find a loo so dump bog roll, sanitary products and nappies behind hedges, people have been undoubtedly touristing down here for over a week now. They are fairly easy to spot. They wander about checking their phone-map or a leaflet and take photos of every pretty bit of architecture or garden. Yes it's lovely that Wiltshire and the SW generally have such a low COVID incidence and death rate. Would you mind awfully if we kept it that way? Just to be clear... The picnic sites and their loos are closed. All the cafes are closed. If you park in what looks like a lay-by on a country lane, you will probably cause gridlock when a tractor and trailer needs to get past the milk lorry (this happened earlier today right here). Most of the wide bits on country lanes aren't lay-bys, but passing places. No we don't 'own' our local area beauty spots, we've been accused of this by loads of people in the past 48 hours - but we do work in them and have to live with the consequences of other people's actions that affect them.

MrsExpo · 12/05/2020 21:05

If you do go, you and everyone else who is there are utter morons IMO.

Legally you can go (I hope you won’t need a pee while you’re there). Morally, it’s reprehensible. Stay home and don’t be a twat.

Why are people making up their own laws, the government advice is out thats it. As long as people adhere to the guidance what is the problem. You might not like it but tough luck take it up with your MP and the government.

Clearly if someone if urinating in public in the wrong place that is different and on any given day is wrong.

PickAChew · 12/05/2020 21:06

The main attraction of whitby is all the buildings, shops, tea rooms and chippies. Hardly worth the bother you'd cause for the people living there and still needing to get on with their day to day lives when there are better beaches, not far away, in much less built up areas.

RedKite96 · 12/05/2020 21:07

YABU. And selfish. And an idiot.

HavenDilemma · 12/05/2020 21:08

@MarieQueenofScots NOBODY owns a public road other than the local council! Just because your house is in front of it, does not mean you own it! 🤦🏼‍♀️
Not engaging any further with this lunacy.

YouTheCat · 12/05/2020 21:08

It wasn't government advice. The cabinet had no part in it. It was Boris and Cummings. It is Boris who is making up his own laws. His cabinet are very angry with him.

In reality we are at level 4 out of 5. 5 is where the NHS is overwhelmed. Our infection rate and death rate have not gone down significantly.

Pinkyyy · 12/05/2020 21:09

Wow so many personal attacks on the OP.

She's doing nothing wrong so people need to back off. If you're so concerned then stay at home.

YouTheCat · 12/05/2020 21:09

Haven, if it's on her deeds then it's her road.

monkeysox · 12/05/2020 21:12

@MarieQueenofScots I also own the road outside my house.

BarryManilowsWig · 12/05/2020 21:12

Don't you have work to go to/do wfh? You can't just drive to random beaches that take your fancy, haven't you a local park you could visit or something?

TheGreatWave · 12/05/2020 21:12

monkeysox Andy P is that you?

If not I think you should send it to him as his next slogan. All is ok though - golf course is opening.

MaxNormal · 12/05/2020 21:12

NOBODY owns a public road other than the local council

It's presumably a private road then, if it's on the deeds of a property and the owner pays for upkeep.

MarieQueenofScots · 12/05/2020 21:13

I don’t know how to make it any clearer Haven

Due to a condition in our deeds the houses on our part of the road own the road in front of our house. Partly due to a road widening scheme and a loss of title due to a fire. It is unusual but perfectly legitimate.

Now are you really so arrogant you assume you know every person’s deeds in the country, or maybe might you be incorrect in this situation...

Now I appreciate “I’m not engaging anymore” is translation for “I’m wrong and won’t admit it” so I don’t expect you to respond.

I’m cringing for you though!

HavenDilemma · 12/05/2020 21:13

@youthecat

A road which is part of the public road system cannot be on house deeds! It would have to be an actual turn-off over a dropped curb and would be considered a private driveway. Why would people try to park on a private driveway? She’s just being indignant. She’s one of those who thinks that they own the on street space in front of their house when they clearly don’t. Ignore it

MarieQueenofScots · 12/05/2020 21:14

It's presumably a private road then, if it's on the deeds of a property and the owner pays for upkeep

It’s an unusual situation, partial private land due to aforementioned situation. We could go down the route of adoption and it’s something we have discussed but to be honest there seems little point right now, given the extra rights to parking it gives us Smile

cyclingmad · 12/05/2020 21:14

Well if your so scared you would be staying indoors anyway and not leaving your house at all so if someone was on the beach what difference does it make to you, your not leaving your house whatsoever

PickUpAPickUpAPenguin · 12/05/2020 21:15

Why did Boris introduce this rule?

People who deliver stuff could obviously drive around freely for work reasons so this new rule doesn't benefit them.

There's no rule saying your journey to work needs to be a maximum distance away so this rule doesn't help people going back to work.

People presumably shop locally so being able to travel further doesn't change things

My only conclusion is that he sees driving as a means to see your one socially distant friend, transport for exercise purposes or a leisure activity in itself.

I know that car traffic has been increasing but encouraging people to drive any distance is surely just going to increase the burden on the NHS?

YouTheCat · 12/05/2020 21:15

No. You are wrong. It isn't part of the public road system hence the OP paying to maintain it and it being on her deeds.

Ponoka7 · 12/05/2020 21:16

Boris wants a day out on his Birthday, so is being deliberately vague.

I want to know were people will be going to the toilet. There's nowhere to pop into. Even if there's a Tesco etc, it takes at least 15 minutes to get in.

HeronLanyon · 12/05/2020 21:16

So the residents of Whitby can’t use their own beach because the space can’t accommodate all of those driving to visit. Why would you do that ? Why not go somewhere less obvious less troublesome ? So what if you go every year. It’ll still be there when you can go and eat and drink and sit in the crowds. Not now.

MarieQueenofScots · 12/05/2020 21:16

@monkeysox you can’t possibly you know Wink

I’m laughing at the idea that I have been paying for maintenance of my land for 12 years for nothing; looking forward to the imaginary rebate from the council Grin

MiniCooperLover · 12/05/2020 21:18

Don't be an idiot OP, it's obvious that this is not the time for a nice saunter on a beach it takes you one hour to get to in good traffic 🙄
