To go to Whitby beach tomorrow

BubblyBarbara · 12/05/2020 18:31

I’ve gone to Whitby every year for the past decade or so and I’m missing it dearly. I’ve read Boris’s PDF and it says you are allowed to drive any distance to “open space” from tomorrow so my plan is to go to Whitby and spend the day on the beach - social distancing of course.

But I did a search on Facebook about car parks etc (it’s ok the parking inspectors are furloughed so I can park anywhere I like) and found lots of angry posts on local groups about how the people of Whitby don’t want people coming into their town yet Confused

It’s legal for me to go tomorrow but the locals don’t want us to go.. who is BU here? I say the law is more important than what the locals say.

Public toilets are surely open for anyone in the town shopping at shops allowed to open?

FliesandPies · 12/05/2020 20:13

Don't be a dick. What if you need a shit

Is that the new official slogan?

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 12/05/2020 20:13

I see it is only an hour away, well go for it!

Flythedragons · 12/05/2020 20:15

We are half an hour from the beach we normally go to. We won’t be driving there yet, we will still be staying local. I think that’s the right thing to do. We will drive to exercise it will save me from walking up some of the huge hills we have here.

We are very lucky to live in a beauty spot so my circumstance maybe different to yours. I am concerned about people flocking here from other counties, but I would untethered they would want to.

Not sure that helps Wink

There is virtually nothing in the very small town centre open.

The public toilets on the seafront, in the Old Town are certainly closed. I would imagine those opposite TI would be too.

The nearest will be up on a road well, we’ll away from the beach (and the town centre) in a Sainsburys.

Flythedragons · 12/05/2020 20:15

Should say understand why they would want to

YouTheCat · 12/05/2020 20:15

The government are now starting to contradict much of what BJ has said. He has not been consulting parliament or his cabinet. He's listening to his advisers who seem to like eugenics.

Even if it was a safe thing to do, I wouldn't. There'll be no loos. No fish and chips.

MaxNormal · 12/05/2020 20:17

@MilkTrayLimeBarrel you're right, frightfully twee. I prefer saying shitting and pissing.

rosiejaune · 12/05/2020 20:20

This is a local beach, for local people.

YABU for driving anywhere if you are not disabled in some way that means you can't walk/cycle/bus.

AllsortsofAwkward · 12/05/2020 20:20

This happened at easter weekend everyone flocked to the local beauty spots. Everyones going to have the same idea and it defeats the hardwork we done for the last 7 weeks. I can see a second wave. Went to Morrisons yesterday and social distancing had already gone out of the window. People reaching over and invading personal space. I dont blame the councils not opening the car parks.

BrainFart · 12/05/2020 20:21

I wonder if the same people who are now rushing off to do will stay quiet or moan like billy-o when the inevitable second wave hits because people can't act for the greater good for a few months.

It's Whitby. I've been and enjoyed it a lot. But it's not the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, and it'll still be there in a few weeks. Essentials only until CV is much more under control.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 12/05/2020 20:21

the local riff raff?
are you on a wind up op?
why Whitby in particular?

AdoptAdaptImprove · 12/05/2020 20:21

I live in a small historic market town which gets large numbers of tourists much of the year, coach loads of them, even though we only have parking for one coach. The pavements are just wide enough for one pushchair or wheelchair. We have two small grocery shops, but some people have to go further afield for groceries: if we all shopped here there wouldn’t be enough space to stock what we need. We’ve been waiting till after dark to walk out from our house, because we can’t socially distance on the pavements if there are other people coming towards us; there’s still enough traffic on the one main Street to mean that stepping into the road isn’t an option. The small amount of available car parking is presently taken up by people who live in our rows of terraced cottages, because there’s not enough width to the roads to allow on street parking, and most are home all day now.

If the tourists resume, we will be in a position where we can’t leave our homes and walk to the chemist, the doctor’s surgery, the grocery shop, because we won’t be able to use the pavements safely. There may not be enough food left in the shops for people who can’t travel further afield, or enough medicine at our pharmacy. Nothing is open bar those three shops, so you can’t contribute meaningfully to our economy. We will be overrun by illegally parked cars in our narrow streets, which will endanger the emergency services’ ability to respond if needed (we have had eight ambulance visits in my street alone since the weekend - this virus is killing our elderly population at an alarming rate).

Please, everyone think before heading to tourist destinations. They may look beautiful but they are places where people have to live and work, and we have as much right to do that safely as you do to enjoy a day out.

MH1111 · 12/05/2020 20:22

OP you can go, but you must absolutely not enjoy yourself. Ever.

When you get home remember to go to confession

Khione · 12/05/2020 20:23

It's going to be pretty cold in Whitby tomorrow - there may well still be a lot of people going there though.

Make sure you take some warm clothes as you will be outside a long time and, from the sounds of it on here, it's possible that you will get back to a damaged car.

Nubbled · 12/05/2020 20:23

Don't be a dick. What if you need a shit

Is that the new official slogan?

More logical than Stay Alert.

sutchie11 · 12/05/2020 20:25

forgetthehousework

'The biggest mistake Boris has made so far is expecting everyone to use common sense, as it is obvious that many are incapable of it.'

He is one without it as the plans show.

Home42 · 12/05/2020 20:27

I’m in a small village in North Wales and the day trippers who’ve continued to come with their dirt bikes, 4x4s, pedal bikes, dogs and children are not welcome. They aren’t welcome in the small local shop with much of the elderly village population gets their bulk of their groceries. They aren’t welcome to pee up the wall of my house in the small alley leading to my back door. They aren’t welcome to park in turning spaces (our small car park is shut). Locals tend to make their feelings known. I’d like to go to the Lake District or the Llyn peninsular but I won’t. I’ll wait until numbers drop enough for tourism to restart and then I will visit. If they open the public loos I will feel welcome in a place 😁

NeutrinoWrangler · 12/05/2020 20:30

Legal? Sure, but don't be surprised if not everyone is thrilled to see the return of the tourists. Any business that are able to make some money from you will be happy, though.

I live near a touristy area. Tourists will soon be crowding roadways, petrol stations, and anywhere they can get food. My family and I won't be going to the beaches, but we'll still potentially be more exposed when we get petrol, grocery shop, etc. So no, I'm not happy to see the return of the tourists.

(And before lockdown went into effect, a group of tourists did bring CV to the local beach and spread it amongst their group. As far as I heard, no-one outside the group caught it, but it could easily have happened.)

BogRollBOGOF · 12/05/2020 20:37

I would be wary of a Mother's Day type rush to tourist hotspots. Places like Whitby are not ideal for social distancing, and they're not going to get much benefit from tourist spending into their local economy.

Going to somewhere fairly local and obscure for a change of scenery is fine, but too many people know the same few places, so they are best avoided.

There's a place in a tourist area that in normal times, we go to frequently off-peak. A sunny weekend afternoon and you may as well be on a High St in December for crowding. I miss it and it will be lovely to get back there, but now is not a great time for a 30 minute drive to test the ground and the carparks may well be closed up anyway. As much as I love the sea, under current circumstances, I can't justify several hours of travelling and would rather let the locals quietly enjoy what's on their doorstep in peak season as a small silver lining to the heavy economic costs that they are facing.

It will all be there next year.

Bella2020 · 12/05/2020 20:37

Half of Teesside will probably be there with you. I know Whitby is lovely, but it's not going anywhere. Why not wait till the R number is much lower and there are considerably fewer deaths from this virus each day.
The government are wanting baby steps from us all so they can see the result on the rate of infection. Everyone flocking to tourist areas isn't baby steps. Actions like this could push up the infection and death rates again, then lockdown is likely to be reintroduced.

Wavingwhiledrowning · 12/05/2020 20:40

I feel like everyone has lost their mind here. This isn't about some crazy 'law'. It's about staying away from people and not bloody dying. Or killing someone else.
I live in Devon. I haven't spent the last few (many) weeks in my house with my children for the fun of it. I'm terrified that everything we've tried to do will go to shit because people are just impatient. And selfish. "Waaaah.. I want to see a beach!" I'd rather keep my loved ones alive. Get a grip.
Why is everyone so desperate to do 'something' with some essential excuse?? Just wait.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 12/05/2020 20:44

Yes, go sit shoulder to shoulder with all the other self-entitled people who lack empathy to the degree they can’t possibly see this argument from the locals’ perspective.

aliphil · 12/05/2020 20:45

Why on earth would you do this? It's selfish and irresponsible.

Methtones · 12/05/2020 20:45

And this is why Wales, northern ireland and Scotland arent following boris's ridiculous plan.
