Seriously considering ditching the people who didn't give a toss. Anyone out there the same?

OP posts:
ScarfLadysBag · 13/05/2020 20:46

From OP’s silence we can assume she’s getting her 80% funding and expecting all her clients to keep paying.

I think there will be a lot of that going on. Some childminders, for example – friends of mine have been asked to keep paying for their childcare, but if their childminders then claim the grant (which let's be honest, of course they will) they're actually going to have more money than they would have otherwise. I understand if it's a cash flow thing – you take the money now in lieu of services for later –but if you're just taking the money and then taking the grant to cover the same three months, I doubt anyone will have much sympathy.

OhTheRoses · 13/05/2020 20:48

Paid mine for the duration. Shortage of cleaners here and she's really good. She did the ironing yesterday (actually has been for last two weeks and has ironed in the summer house) . She's coming on Friday to do a mega spring clean inside and next Friday to sweep outside and clean the put door paintwork. This is thank us!

Seems ridiculous to me. I run a company that has continued to provide services even though some companies haven't paid. Being spiteful wont help you at all. The risks come with the freedoms of being self employed. And if you've been legit then you're entitled to a grant anyway so why should anyone pay you?

KenAdams · 13/05/2020 20:55

Have you not declared your income then?

RonSwansonIsBuff · 13/05/2020 22:18

When an employer is harsh, uncaring or makes no communication

Clients are not OPs employers. OP is self employed.

Do cleaners prefer cash in hand so it doesn't affect any benefits claimed?

Intelinside57 · 13/05/2020 23:56

It's been said before... surely Op will benefit from the government self-employed scheme, based on her declared tax. So why should customers carry on paying her as well?

IHaveBrilloHair · 14/05/2020 00:00

My cleaner does not get paid cash in hand, how insulting.

brillohair

I pay my cleaner cash in hand, also the yoga instructor and equestrian coach. Have I been insulting them unawares? Or should I be insulted myself? I'm very keen to take offence, I just need clarity to start off in the right direction.

Aridane · 14/05/2020 05:21

@yoloPenguinsEatfish - ha ha - looks like I’m aligned in my views with the majority of the DM readers’ comments - ie that OP is BU and entitled Blush

NotSorry · 14/05/2020 07:13

@WhatPollyForgot

I pay my cleaner cash and I get a lot of cash payments, doesn’t mean we don’t declare it

SmileyClare · 14/05/2020 08:54

Polly Please stop insinuating that cleaners are lying tax dodgers who claim benefits fraudulently. Cleaners are continually accused of this and not only is it very insulting, it's getting boring now.

These days there is very little advantage for self employed cleaners in not declaring income, the profits are generally low so there is little or no tax to pay and declaring income allows people to access additional support; for example working tax credit, child tax credit and help with childcare costs.

MarshaBradyo · 14/05/2020 08:56

Smiley yes agree. It makes sense to declare.

SmileyClare · 14/05/2020 09:11

Although no cleaner should expect payment for not working, I think it's unfair to assume they are fine and getting government support.

All self employed have been on zero income since March as the Income support scheme has not released any funds yet. Therefore although there should be some help for most, it's been a struggle during this time.

If a customer can afford to continue paying something to their cleaner and they have built up a good level of trust or friendship with them, then that would help significantly. That also works as a retainer for their services.
I am going to pay back the small amount one of my clients has been giving me when I return to work.

It's unfair to ditch customers who choose not to offer any support, they are not obliged to help so I don't particularly agree with Op's attitude.
However, I think it's unfair to say all cleaners are greedily wanting to "get paid twice."

I agree thesispieces it's a huge worry as a cleaner that I won't be able to build my client base back up. Although I am now "allowed" to return to work, very few of my customers want me to return just now. Some are still fearful of the risk of mixing households, some are in vulnerable groups and some families like you say are facing financial difficulties themselves.
There are also the practicalities of cleaning while implementing safe distancing /hygiene measures when entire families are still wfh with children off school. They also don't want the noise and disruption of a cleaner when they're trying to work!

On top of that, there are people out of work (the hospitality or retail sector for example) that now might be going into cleaning as a viable employment option.

I am worried sick about the future.
there is a huge depression coming and the middle classes will be hit the worst Not sure I agree with that. Us working classes are going to be equally if not more fucked!

I’m sure you’ll be able to rebuild Smiley. You sound like a lovely person - very professional and your comments are more intelligent and balanced than most on here. Sorry to hear you’ve been struggling and best of luck to you in the coming weeks.

In that case they will all have been doing their tax returns and will be entitled to the payout.

SmileyClare · 14/05/2020 10:39

Yes that's right Polly It can't come soon enough for me! I was just managing on the money I had coming in so three months on no income has ruined me. I am grateful there is support available.

Thanks, monkey that's kind. I'm trying to remain positive. It could be a lot worse.

StormTreader · 14/05/2020 14:24

YABU They're customers, they're not your mum.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/05/2020 16:32

why would they pay you, you are self employed , not employed

some are lucky and pay their cleaners, esp if they are still on same wage

as @SmileyClare put it well about self employment

we get 80% of nett profits NOT gross wage as employed get

so once we have paid our expenses etc, then we get 80% of that

shame its not gross, i would be quids in !!

we have been able to apply for this grant, from yesterday but we get given a date and time, and for some its next week, its then 6 days to get into our account, so basically payment in june

backdated for 3mths , but for those who havent been able to work since march, they are screwed financially having n money for 8/10w

im self employed, and luckily enough to be working tho stop in 2w and unlikely will find a new client imm, but if i wasnt i wouldnt expect to be paid for doing sweet fuck all

but

many se dont declare their income, my nail lady doesnt, she earns £25ph and is fully booked all day x 5, so earning £200 a day £1000 a week

she said she wont get anything thats coz she hasnt declared that she earns £45/50K a year !!!!
