The new slogan - Stay Alert....

Alert to what? Is the virus going to break into our homes?
Listen out for someone coughing then run a mile from them.

What on earth does Stay alert actually mean?

At least Stay home made sense stay alert means nothing at all or AIBU?

To me it means if you see the virus run like hell in the opposite direction then you'll be ok.. Cause you can the virus right?

NeverForgetYourDreams · 10/05/2020 12:46

Wash your hands
Keep distance where possible
Don't go out if you have symptoms

Zaphodsotherhead · 10/05/2020 12:47

Stay Alert is a bit like Be Careful...a pointless thing to say. Nobody is deliberately going to Not be careful or alert, are they?

Mcvitoes · 10/05/2020 12:48

It's so clear in itself that there are are many extra instructions to supplement.

It's just a shame that they're all just 'suggested' - where possible, if you can, only if you can be bothered...

What does STAY ALERT mean to you?
VerticalHorizon · 10/05/2020 12:48

It's a lousy slogan.

Stay at home was quite compelling. It implied a real sense of danger.

'Stay alert' now means 'it's ok not be at home as long as you stay alert', and this is giving the impression that things aren't quite as dangerous as they were... rather than guarding us against complacency, I think it's sowing the seeds for it.

The problem he (and any government has) is that he wants to keep the economy going (good reasons for this, as the economy will also save lives). He needs us to somehow manage to work without it all going tits up.

We will end up with all sorts of interpretations, plenty of unscrupulous companies takings risks, or clients pressuring them to start working again (but putting all responsibility on the company to take care of their employees).

It's going to be so hard to open up slowly. It has to be done though.

Crap slogan all the same.

listsandbudgets · 10/05/2020 12:49

I wish it had been "Staying Alive" just for the ?pleasure? of seeing Boris performing the Bee Gees on his podium.

I've no idea what it means OP. Its not as if we're in a war where we can be told to stay alert for spies and enemies... the virus dosen't exactly go strolling down the street chatting away in a foreign accent whilst trying to look inconspicuous.

We will have to await 7pm I suppose!

Chosennone · 10/05/2020 12:49

Does it mean we need to stop drinking 🤔

GrimmsFairytales · 10/05/2020 12:50

It's so clear in itself that there are are many extra instructions to supplement.

Indeed. As clear as mud. Grin

3cats · 10/05/2020 12:50

Well they did keep your distance and wash your hands before and it was an utter disaster. It doesn’t work, but basically, money is more important than people and it’s up to ourselves to keep safe. The government doesn’t care. 30,000 people dead and rising. It didn’t have to be like this. Other countries have managed things better.

Marpan · 10/05/2020 12:52

It’s Instagram post to me looks like “everyone head on out but stay alert”

NeverForgetYourDreams · 10/05/2020 12:54

Lockdown was about flattening the curve so NHS Didn't get overwhelmed. That's now the case. Lockdown needs to be relaxed bit by bit. It was never meant to eradicate this disease but just slow it down. It's slowed down. Time to re introduce some normality.

HMSSophie · 10/05/2020 12:55

Haven't RTFT but does it mean we are to stay alert because the UK needs lerts?

fortyfifty · 10/05/2020 12:55

Perhaps they mean Stay Vigilant but worry that's too big a word for some people to understand.... Confused

tara66 · 10/05/2020 12:57

Don't nod off..?

Lily193 · 10/05/2020 12:59

Stay alert when out and about in regards to social distancing
Stay alert if you have symptoms and act appropriately
Stay alert against fake news, and keep up to date with official sources
Stay alert regarding your hygiene

This.

B1rdbra1n · 10/05/2020 13:00

It means something is coming but we can't or won't tell you what, so you just have to wait, like this
-->😳

ThomasHardyPerennial · 10/05/2020 13:01

I interpreted it to mean don't go back to "normal" yet.

B1rdbra1n · 10/05/2020 13:01

Vigilant sounds too much like vigilante that's probably why they don't use vigilant
For the people who confuse paedophile with paediatric

Sarahandco · 10/05/2020 13:02

If you can't be good be careful

BeetrootRocks · 10/05/2020 13:02

Not read the whole thread but Boris (like trump) seems to be incapable of talking about this threat in any terms that aren't more suitable for war.

Stay alert reminds me of the sort of thing they'd have said in the war about spies/ bombers coming etc

In this situation it is meaningless.

Boredbumhead · 10/05/2020 13:02

What the fuck dies this mean. Gosh they are awful fucking leaders.

BeetrootRocks · 10/05/2020 13:04

When I read the thread title I assumed this was going to be advice to women about 'keeping themselves safe' on nights out tbh and was getting ready to froth Grin

Reallymissthegym · 10/05/2020 13:05

If I stand with one foot in Wales and on in England- would I stay home or just be aware? Xx

MorrisZapp · 10/05/2020 13:05

Stay alert is the perfect slogan for this stage. I forgot social distancing briefly in a local shop yesterday and had to be politely reminded. I've forgotten to wash my hands a couple of times too.

It's time to remind people to keep it up as if it was new advice. It isn't new advice so it's hard to reinforce the message without losing people's attention.

What pithy, short slogan would people prefer to see, that wouldn't be open to any kind of criticism or interpretation?

MorrisZapp · 10/05/2020 13:07

Does anyone think BJ is going to stand up tonight and say 'right folks, be alert. That's it. Cheerio'?

Of course he won't. He'll use full sentences and no doubt give an explanation of what it means in practice.
