The new slogan - Stay Alert....

Alert to what? Is the virus going to break into our homes?
Listen out for someone coughing then run a mile from them.

What on earth does Stay alert actually mean?

At least Stay home made sense stay alert means nothing at all or AIBU?

*It's hilarious how many people are claiming to not understand because it fits their agenda not to but would usually have no problem understanding the phrase.

Stay alert while walking alone at night.
Stay alert while driving.
Stay alert while crossing the road.
Stay alert for burglars.*

The problem isn't the phrase, it's the use of the phrase to refer to an invisible threat and where there's already been a huge variation in the community idea of a reasonable response.

So please give us an example of how it would be used in relation to coronavirus?

AravisTarkheena · 10/05/2020 12:00

@KingJarvis Typical that it’s the right who don’t seem to realise how vague it is. Wonder why that is.

Ariseandsmellthetea99 · 10/05/2020 12:00

I guess it’s been chosen for its ambiguity since the rules will be changing all the time as virus and our handling of it progresses.

Stay alert therefore means, remain aware and following if current advice... but a bit less wordy!

Ariseandsmellthetea99 · 10/05/2020 12:01

Oh and I’m ‘left wing’

1forsorrow · 10/05/2020 12:02

@Sparklingbrook They said ‘Stay Home’ then told us the reasons you could leave the house. I didn’t think it was difficult to understand. Maybe read some of the threads on here where people get abuse for doing the things they are allowed to do, the abusers justifying it with "Just Stay at Home like you're told." So no I don't think it was crystal clear to many people although most reasonably intelligent could work out what they were trying to say.

Drink more coffee

Lovely1a2b3c · 10/05/2020 12:03

Mix with over households, go to work BUT be alert to the symptoms starting roughly 5-10 days later.

BeltaneBride · 10/05/2020 12:03

I hope it means be sensible and assess your own risk and be kind to others and not judge people for having different assessments.

Lovely1a2b3c · 10/05/2020 12:04

Stay apart would be better, stay home was fine!

1forsorrow · 10/05/2020 12:04

It means that the Westminster government has just added one more turd to the pile of shit that has been their response to this pandemic. Now that's what I call crystal clear.

Pebbles574 · 10/05/2020 12:04

The thing is, these 3-part slogans tend to work. The number of people who can parrot the "Stay Home. Protect the NHS. Save Lives" one is massively high from a public health communications point of view.

It's also why the Leave campaign's 'Take Back Control' slogan was so successful.

I think people are choosing to misunderstand it to suit their agenda. I think it's clear (and will also be explained) that it means 'Stay alert to the risks you have already been made aware of' as we gradually emerge out of lockdown/ don't start reverting to previous habits/ stay alert to your own personal risk in any given circumstance.
The government can't issue advice that is personalised for every individual, we need to begin to use common sense/ take some personal responsibility for our decisions and actions...

B1rdbra1n · 10/05/2020 12:07

It means 'none shall sleep'

AudacityOfHope · 10/05/2020 12:08

Um, I think it means Boris wants as many of us back to work as will go, so we can die in service of the economy.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 10/05/2020 12:09

Be A lert. Your Country Needs Lerts.

myangelalex · 10/05/2020 12:10

We need it clarifying obviously!

It will be something like
Social distancing,
Wear a mask
Wash hands
Keep apart at work
Clean surfaces adequately
Get tested if unwell
Don't visit vulnerable relatives
Work from home where possible
Stagger working hours
Click and collect or distance in supermarkets
Don't open unnecessary businesses u less distancing is possible
And so on...basically be aware how the virus spreads, danger zones, and adequate protection

GrimmsFairytales · 10/05/2020 12:13

We need it clarifying obviously!

Not obvious at all.

According to some on here if you need it clarifying you're thick, stupid and being deliberately obtuse.

onesmalldog · 10/05/2020 12:13

personally I am hoping that they have some supersoaker type spray whereby you spray a person next to you and it they turn green they have it ...it they turn purple then they have recovered and if they turn pink - virgin untouched by Covid-19

Grin
0DETTE · 10/05/2020 12:13

Well it doesn’t apply in Wales, Scotland and NI.

The message there is still “ stay home “.

yellowbrickwhorl · 10/05/2020 12:14

Drink more coffee

^ This.

Red789 · 10/05/2020 12:15

Stay Alert the slogan for 2-4 weeks followed by Stay Home for the Summer months. Easier to enforce no travelling for holidays in late July and August 😀

GetUpAgain · 10/05/2020 12:15

It makes me think of the Lert thing, was it from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy or just similar sort of culture/humour?

Agreed it's a crap slogan.

I'm living on this basis:

Stay home as much as possible.
Stay apart if you're out.
Don't be a shit employer.

DressingGownofDoom · 10/05/2020 12:15

Stay alert to what your neighbours are doing. Susan next doors mum stopped by on her walk and they had a non essential chat 2 metres apart? Dob the bitch in.

AravisTarkheena · 10/05/2020 12:17

But we’re not actually mixing with other households and going back to work are we? Obv will have to wait for this announcement- and yes why don’t they just tell us now if it’s pre recorded- but for a week they’ve been trying to squash the idea that we’ll be seeing real changes. Idk it really annoys me that someone got paid to come up with something as pants as ‘stay alert’ and wit all the apologists going Ooooh but it’s so clear to meeeee. Well good for you I hope you enjoy snogging your poster of Dominic Raab.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 10/05/2020 12:17

Stay vigilant might have been better. The whole 'stay home' thing was rather literally interpreted by many.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 10/05/2020 12:18

It also sows the seeds of blame: when you get Covid19 it will be because you weren't alert enough
This was my first thought. To subtly place it in the minds of the public so that eventually if you catch the virus the pervasive opinion will be it’s not because the government didn’t do it’s job and get a handle on ppe, testing, tracing, quarantining etc, it’ll be you got it because you did something wrong.
