Silly porridge debate AIBU?

DISCLAIMER: DP is in no way trying to police my food and I can eat however much/little I want whenever I want to!

I have been trying to loose weight recently and my usual breakfast of choice is a small bowl of porridge with cinnamon and chia seeds, sometimes I add a tiny drizzle of honey on top (half a teaspoon) or go without any.
I make it from organic rolled oats.

We were discussing it the other day and DP is saying it's not a great breakfast to have if I'm trying to loose weight and I should either be having a breakfast with veg and protein or having protein with it (boiled egg on the side or something) to help break down the carbs as it's all just carbs and will be bloating - I pointed out its not bloating at all but he's sticking by the whole "it's not a great breakfast to have" and that it's not a balanced breakfast for weight loss.

I find it keeps me full for quite a while even having the fairly small amount that I do and I don't really fancy having an egg or whatever it is before or after. I thought it was a good breakfast to have and beats my usually "try to skip breakfast and then snack on a load of bad stuff before lunch" routine.

So AIBU and is it really a bad breakfast to have?

I lost 2 and a half stone eating porridge for breakfast everyday

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 10/05/2020 10:13

It's a great breakfast to have, provided you don't have too much (porridge is very moreish: I speak from experience) Grin

You can get your protein later in the day. The most important thing is to have a breakfast that you enjoy Smile

KKSlider · 10/05/2020 10:14

A good breakfast should be roughly 300-400 calories, your porridge would be around the 350 mark? Absolutely nothing wrong with it and if you're enjoying it then it's far more sustainable long term than forcing down an egg that you don't even like. Tell him to jog on, its porridge not shit in a bowl Grin

Oysterbabe · 10/05/2020 10:14

Are you losing weight?

LakieLady · 10/05/2020 10:18

That's a great incentive to lose weight. Stick to your porridge, get slim, tell him "I told you so".

Win win.

CobaltRose96 · 10/05/2020 10:19

When it comes to weight loss you can eat pretty much what you want as long as you’re in a caloric deficit. There are foods that are more nutritious than others, but when it comes purely to weight loss you just need to be in a deficit, and you will lose weight. You don’t need to cut any food groups out.

I think porridge is perfectly good breakfast! I lost two stone and mainly had porridge for breakfast.

JohnFinlaysNewTeeth · 10/05/2020 10:21

He’s talking out of his arse quite frankly. Oats are one of the most nutrient dense foods going. Complex carbohydrates are good for you. Soluble fibre, excellent for you (meaning you feel fuller for longer). Iron, Zinc, B1.. plus many more vitamins are in oats. Oh and guess what else.. protein too. Where exactly is he getting his nutritional information from?

AnnofPeeves · 10/05/2020 10:23

Tell him to learn a bit about nutrition. There's protein in oats, seeds and milk. You could then ask him to explain exactly how eating more protein will break down the carbohydrates you are eating. That should stop him criticising your food choices Grin

HaddawayAndShite · 10/05/2020 10:24

A 50g serving of Scottish Oats gives you 5.3g protein whereas a medium Egg only gives you 5.5g (my fitness pal macros). Check your brand but I’d bet the numbers are vaguely similar if it’s rolled oats.

NearlyGranny · 10/05/2020 10:25

Is your DH a dietician? If so, suggest he writes a best-selling diet book. If not, ignore him. "Hmm, interesting. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the subject of my food intake, " should shut him up, with "... again," tacked on the end if he re-offends. 😉

Oats are super healthy and we should ideally be eating them twice a day, I heard, so porridge or home made muesli for breakfast and oatcakes for lunch is my solution. I'm certain I'd be losing weight if it weren't for all the baking I've been doing! 😆

If you want to lose weight, rather than run a marathon, your way sounds best to me, and you like it, so there's no more to be said. Except to say, measure your oats out with a scoop so you can be sure of portion control. I make mine with half a cup of oats, three quarters water and a quarter mik. If I'm needing to lose a bit, I just cut it to a third of a cup and truly I don't notice the difference.

NekoShiro · 10/05/2020 10:25

I'm currently losing 0.5kg a week eating porridge for breakfast with 10g of butter in it so I'm sure he'd hate my breakfast to haha

StopGo · 10/05/2020 10:28

Oats and Chia seeds both contain protein. If it keeps you full until lunch then that is all that matters.
You could also try overnight oats with low fat yogurt.

TheMobileSiteMadeMeSignup · 10/05/2020 10:30

Eating proteins and carbs together helps build muscle cos the (right kind of) carbs helps the body absorb the proteins which help muscle structure. It's why body builders and athletes carb load alongside their protein-rich diets.

You're better off eating foods which help you to feel full on portions which are low in calories so it sounds like you're doing the right thing with your porridge. So porridge, wholemeals etc. Simple carbs such as white bread give you the full feeling but also spikes your blood sugar level which then quickly crashes so we snack on more food (more calories) to help us feel better.

NearlyGranny · 10/05/2020 10:30

I do what I call Berlin porridge - DD2 and I had it in a Berlin café once or twice. Plain cooked porridge with a sprinkle of cinnamon, a couple of crumbled walnuts and a small crisp apple diced on top. Watch the walnuts for calorie content! 😳

Catsick36 · 10/05/2020 10:32

I agree with what he's saying. He can have an opinion. Ultimately you decide what you eat.

userabcname · 10/05/2020 10:36

I've been losing baby weight (about a stone and a half so far) and I'm losing weight eating porridge or weetabix for breakfast. I find it better to eat a carbier breakfast and then end the day with a more protein-y meal - I'm definitely less bloated when I go to bed when I eat like this. I think porridge is fine!

BarbaraofSeville · 10/05/2020 10:37

It's fine if it keeps you full, but I find the 'porridge keeps you full till lunch' a big lie as I'm always starving an hour after I have it, no matter what proteins I add to it, which is a shame as I really like it.

Lordfrontpaw · 10/05/2020 10:38

It’s good for your cholesterol.

1idea · 10/05/2020 10:39

I add chocolate protein powder to my oats it’s amazing but whatever works for you if you’re enjoying it keep going as you are.

EatsShootsAndRuns · 10/05/2020 10:42

If I have porridge for breakfast I don't get mid-morning munchies.

timetest · 10/05/2020 10:43

Porridge is an excellent breakfast. I’ve found that adding a tablespoon of chia seeds keeps me full till lunchtime. I would find an egg indigestible without a couple of slices of toast with butter.

DontStandSoCloseToMe · 10/05/2020 10:45

It really depends I have PCOS and insulin resistance, I wouldn't lose weight eating porridge, poached egg with grilled asparagus or mushrooms etc I would. You know how your body responds to different foods, I love carbs my body does not

Maybelatte · 10/05/2020 10:48

I lost seven stone in a year and had porridge for breakfast most days.

Mychitchatdays · 10/05/2020 10:52

I lost 8 stone nearly five years ago now and I've kept it off. I have porridge every morning for breakfast as it keeps me full till lunchtime and it tastes delicious too.

TheRealSlamShady · 10/05/2020 10:52

I usually alternate with porridge and scrambled/poached eggs on toast but always find porridge fills me longest?
Chia seeds have protein in
