Silly porridge debate AIBU?

DISCLAIMER: DP is in no way trying to police my food and I can eat however much/little I want whenever I want to!

I have been trying to loose weight recently and my usual breakfast of choice is a small bowl of porridge with cinnamon and chia seeds, sometimes I add a tiny drizzle of honey on top (half a teaspoon) or go without any.
I make it from organic rolled oats.

We were discussing it the other day and DP is saying it's not a great breakfast to have if I'm trying to loose weight and I should either be having a breakfast with veg and protein or having protein with it (boiled egg on the side or something) to help break down the carbs as it's all just carbs and will be bloating - I pointed out its not bloating at all but he's sticking by the whole "it's not a great breakfast to have" and that it's not a balanced breakfast for weight loss.

I find it keeps me full for quite a while even having the fairly small amount that I do and I don't really fancy having an egg or whatever it is before or after. I thought it was a good breakfast to have and beats my usually "try to skip breakfast and then snack on a load of bad stuff before lunch" routine.

So AIBU and is it really a bad breakfast to have?

If porridge works for you - go with it! Your husband has no idea how digestion works if he thinks protein breaks down carbs! Some people find eating eggs/meat keeps them fuller for longer, that's all. And if you are weight training and trying to build muscle you need to eat a bit more protein, but otherwise you are fine.

moveandmove · 10/05/2020 10:56

I'm starving very soon after eating porridge. It does nothing for me.

TheClitterati · 10/05/2020 10:57

I do like porridge but it makes me hungry soon after. A protein based carb free meal is always better for me. But I can see his people are different.

TheClitterati · 10/05/2020 10:57

His - how!

YinMnBlue · 10/05/2020 10:57

Protein doesn’t “break down “ carbs.

You are most likely to succeed on any diet if you are happy eating it. So take no notice.

“Interesting opinion, but this is what seems to work for me, so I’ll stick it out, thanks”

RedskyAtnight · 10/05/2020 10:57

Everyone has an opinion about how to lose weight! And some things work better for some people than others.

The main thing is do you enjoy it, and are you losing weight?

ErrolTheDragon · 10/05/2020 10:58

It's fine but imo easy to overdo the portion especially with seeds and nuts on top.

Find what works for you. Some people do better with a big breakfast of one sort or another, others do better not 'breaking their fast' until lunchtime.

vanillandhoney · 10/05/2020 10:59

Porridge makes me hungry!

I have it in winter as it's nice and warming before going to work outside all day, but it doesn't fill me up Blush

tempnamechange98765 · 10/05/2020 11:00

I think it depends what works for you weight loss wise - for me (and most people surely?) it's all about calories, so if that's what you're doing I think it's great! And similar to what I have as I find porridge really filling too. Protein is supposed to be more filling but porridge is too I find. If it fills you up go for it!

GrumpyHoonMain · 10/05/2020 11:01

It should be okay provided you don’t have pcos.

Angel2702 · 10/05/2020 11:01

You can have whatever breakfast you like for weight loss as long as you maintain a calorie deficit you can eat anything you want and lose weight.

YinMnBlue · 10/05/2020 11:01

There are some garbled accounts of the metabolic process on this thread.

Beechview · 10/05/2020 11:01

My sil has lost about 10 kg over the last few months and she has porridge every morning.
I, however, find it makes me hungrier quicker than a breakfast of more protein and veg or even no breakfast.

If it’s working for you, carry on.

tempnamechange98765 · 10/05/2020 11:02

Just to add my porridge definitely keeps me full til lunch, I never snack between breakfast and lunch! But if I have eg an omelette for lunch, I'm starving at 3-4pm! Should have porridge for lunch shouldn't I Grin

LadyEloise · 10/05/2020 11:03

Porridge doesn't stop me being hungry mid morning.Blush
What am i doing wrong ?

Lordfrontpaw · 10/05/2020 11:05

Eating anything for breakfast always makes me ravenous by mid-morning. Best not to wake my belly up!

IncrediblySadToo · 10/05/2020 11:09

I happen to agree with him because I think a low carb diet is good for you and it keeps my diabetes under control without medication

Others will disagree because they have different opinions and something else works for them.

There really isn't one right answer. See if your way works for you or not. If not maybe try his way 🤷🏻‍♀️

heron20 · 10/05/2020 11:10

I have porridge most mornings.

I always weigh it out. 30g oats contains 3.6g of protein
I add 25g protein powder (once its started to cool down) which gives a further 20g protein (depends which flavour/brand).

Your chia Seeds also contain protein. I'd weigh them as are quite high in cals due to the fat,

So ignore your husband. He might mean we'll but ultimately if your brekkie is stopping you snacking, tastes good and gives you energy for the morning then crack on.

overweightcat · 10/05/2020 11:10

Didn't expect so many replies !

I have only started the changes over the last week or so so I guess it's a bit early to see results. I've been generally more mindful and trying to cut out all sweets/crisps as they are my weakness, I'm making myself unsweetened fruit tea when I get peckish rather than open the cupboard and look for snacks and when I really want a snack I have a few nuts or 1 of something rather than 3 or 6 Blush biscuits at a time.

I also jog for 25mins 3 x a week.

It's probably going to be a slow progress but I'm hoping to get there eventually.

Porridge is a great breakfast - just look at body builders, when they're cutting porridge is there still.

My DP has a massive bowl of porridge with a scoop of protein powder for flavour - perhaps, if you wanted, you could do that - get one of the new flavours like toffee (or I think I saw cinnamon graham flavour!) and use that instead of the honey/cinnamon - you've got the sweetness, the flavour, and the protein then.

Lordfrontpaw · 10/05/2020 11:16

When I was trying to lose a bit of weight I found boiled egg whites very useful.

Ellmau · 10/05/2020 11:22

He's entitled to an opinion, but in this case his opinion os wrong.

Porridge is an excellent healthy breakfast. Are you making it with water or milk? If milk, skimmed, semi or full? You could go down to skimmed if currently using something else to help a bit. You could also add a handful of berries on top.

YinMnBlue · 10/05/2020 11:22

If you are making it with milk, milk is also contains complete protein.

Keep the Cal Count down by not using full fat.

Go steady on the snack nuts!

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 10/05/2020 11:24

Yep. I'm a bodybuilder and porridge forms a key part of my diet Smile

KnobwithaK · 10/05/2020 11:28

If it keeps YOU full, then it's all good.

Personally I find myself getting hungry a couple of hours afterwards.. maybe that is because I eat the fine ground porridge though.. the jumbo oats take longer to digest. Also depends on the ratio of water/milk that you use.

I also think that it's possible to focus too much on having the perfect diet when trying to lose weight.. at the end of the day it also has to be something that you enjoy and can sustain, so even if scrambled eggs and mushrooms might be "better", if porridge works for you then stick with it.
