Silly porridge debate AIBU?

DISCLAIMER: DP is in no way trying to police my food and I can eat however much/little I want whenever I want to!

I have been trying to loose weight recently and my usual breakfast of choice is a small bowl of porridge with cinnamon and chia seeds, sometimes I add a tiny drizzle of honey on top (half a teaspoon) or go without any.
I make it from organic rolled oats.

We were discussing it the other day and DP is saying it's not a great breakfast to have if I'm trying to loose weight and I should either be having a breakfast with veg and protein or having protein with it (boiled egg on the side or something) to help break down the carbs as it's all just carbs and will be bloating - I pointed out its not bloating at all but he's sticking by the whole "it's not a great breakfast to have" and that it's not a balanced breakfast for weight loss.

I find it keeps me full for quite a while even having the fairly small amount that I do and I don't really fancy having an egg or whatever it is before or after. I thought it was a good breakfast to have and beats my usually "try to skip breakfast and then snack on a load of bad stuff before lunch" routine.

So AIBU and is it really a bad breakfast to have?

@KnobwithaK scrambled eggs and mushrooms are the stuff of nightmares!
Unfortunately I hate mushrooms with a passion yet DP always asks if I want some of his mushroom omelette/scrambled eggs Envy < not jealousy.

I will keep on with my porridge.
I make it either with almond milk or semi skimmed milk when out of almond if I'm making for myself.
DCs have full fat milk with it.

I hate porridge but wish I didn't as my trainer said it would be great (with peanut butter or other protein) as breakfast. If it's served with protein then the carbs do not settle as sugar so it's a great brekkie. I do just have egg based but just because I love eggs

myangelalex · 10/05/2020 12:17

Similar to mine. It's a perfect slow release carb and ideal for losing weight.

Lose by the way, not loose (that's what your skirt feels like when you've lost weight). Sorry, the loose/lose thing grates on me. Blush

CloudsCoveredTheSky · 10/05/2020 12:22

"Simple carbs such as white bread give you the full feeling but also spikes your blood sugar level"

This is not a thing.

Waveysnail · 10/05/2020 12:25

Loving porridge. Real treat is seeds and nuts and some dried berries yum

Windyatthebeach · 10/05/2020 12:26

And we all know how you can lose a tremendous amount very quickly.....

franfine · 10/05/2020 12:53

@DontStandSoCloseToMe I have this too. What do you eat?

YinMnBlue · 10/05/2020 13:40

If it's served with protein then the carbs do not settle as sugar so it's a great brekkie

Nope to the bad science, but It is a great brekkie and oats and milk do have significant protein.

heron20 · 10/05/2020 13:47

mmm yes to stirring through some peanut butter.

But watch how much you add. Very high in calories (which is why it tastes sooo good)

Missillusioned · 10/05/2020 13:49

I always feel ravenous after eating porridge or any cereal. I need protein to keep me full
2 Sausages at breakfast will keep me going most of the day. Obviously sausages are not ideal for other reasons, but if I can't have some sort of meat based protein, I'm better off from a hunger pov not eating breakfast at all, so I rarely do.

NearlyGranny · 10/05/2020 13:57

I'd just say, you're going to lose weight and confound your critic on the hearth. Once you see the first few kilos roll off you will feel confident you are on the right track. Why not just suggest to your DH that if he wants to be supportive, he should do three things: never pass any comment or pull any sort of face whatever he may see you buying, preparing, eating or not eating; never buy, prepare for you or offer you any meal, snack or drink you haven't asked for and finally, never ask or cooment whether/how much weight you have lost but wait for announcements? This has worked well for me!

Watch the nuts for snacking. They are yummy and healthy but more calorie packed than anything else on earth. If you want a snack, prepare some carrot, cucumber or celery sticks and have them in the fridge. Like crudités only without the dip. 😉

ErrolTheDragon · 10/05/2020 14:40

mmm yes to stirring through some peanut butter.

Almond butter is even better.

DontStandSoCloseToMe · 10/05/2020 16:02

@franfine honestly at the moment too many carbs! In my defence DH and I are working opposite shifts doing paperwork at home and looking after 17 months old DS, nursery is closed and no grandparent access, so I'm comfort/streets eating and I have gained weight, but I'm just so tired.
To maintain or lose weight I strictly calorie count, anything over 1250 is no good for me. Avoid processed foods, all white/refined carbs have veg instead. Summer is easier interesting salads with lean protein, I find sweet potato ok for me in moderation and pulses/beans rather than rice/pasta etc. If I do want carbs and I'm being healthy I'll have whole grain honestly they don't taste as good so I don't eat as much! Also one cheat meal a week, anything I like and if I have alcohol vodka and soda with lots of fresh lime rather than wine, beer etc. I really need to get back on board......

AnnofPeeves · 10/05/2020 17:52

then the carbs do not settle as sugar

Could you explain what that actually means? I'm struggling to make sense of it.

Pinkblueberry · 10/05/2020 18:04

Do you make it with milk? There’s your protein. And porridge oats contain protein too. Not that that has anything to do with burning carbs - ignore your DH, I don’t think he knows as much about nutrition as he likes to make out.

overweightcat · 11/05/2020 10:08

Thanks everyone!

Thought I'd update I just finished a lovely bowl of porridge after my morning jog Grin with cinnamon and chia seeds!

I left DP to his mushroom 😷 omelette and toast I think he's just jealous because he's secretly wanting porridge but has to stand his ground after our conversation Wink

Excellent choice of breakfast. Although I admire you for running before breakfast. I HAVE to eat first..

I like the sound of your DH's breakfast too. I had one slice of toast today, two poached eggs, 1/4 of an avocado (had to share it with myDH) and some asparagus. Raring to go now!

letmethinkaboutitfornow · 11/05/2020 10:28

@overweightcat - OP, first of all, well done for wanting to do something about your weight!
Especially as - by the sound of it - in a very healthy way.
Regular exercise, reduced carbs and less calory in than burnt.

I have been eating porridge for breakfast for years. Even if I stay in the US, I just take it with me.
Have you considered having maybe Unsweetened Soy milk with it if you / DH feel that you could do with a bit more protein? I have mine with it and I love it!

(but I can also have porridge in the afternoon as a snack! - better than a pack of biscuits! Smile )

Keep up the good work! Slowly but surely!
it is likely to be more efficient if you have realistic aims and steady progress

heron20 · 11/05/2020 10:28

I will say though that if your weight loss doesn't happen as you anticipate consider logging your food. I use myfitness pal for logging - it is mostly accurate - if I think the values look a bit wild I double check.

I weigh most of my food as it can be easy to under estimate how much is on aplate/in a bowl. When my DH has porridge he eats at least twice as much as me as he doesn't weigh his. The amount I allow myself is quite enough calorie wise and keeps me full for a good few hours.

UnfinishedSymphon · 11/05/2020 10:38

I've lost over 9 stone and have had porridge with banana and honey most mornings, I use 45g dry oats and skimmed milk

Powerplant · 11/05/2020 10:46

Carry on enjoying your porridge. It keeps me full until lunchtime and I lost weight due to the fact I wasn’t snacking mid morning

Settlersofcatan · 11/05/2020 10:56

Carbs keep me full for longer. Everyone is different!

BossAssBitch · 11/05/2020 11:03

Oddly, porridge makes me more hungry than if I simply cut out breakfast altogether. I cannot lose weight on it.

If eating porridge works for you, continue eating it.

It's a bit like my lovely DH who often tells me, as a middle aged peri woman, if I go on a few runs a week, I will lose loads of weight Hmm Grin Grin

CloudsCoveredTheSky · 11/05/2020 11:17

@boss same, it I eat porridge, I'm starving an hour or so later. If I skip breakfast, I can easily make it til lunch.

Falafellygood · 11/05/2020 12:33

I bloody love porridge and think it's highly underrated as a health food. In the colder months, I eat it every day (muesli and granola at this time of year) and it keeps my full until lunch. I lost 3 stone last year.

I rarely fancy eggs in the morning. Carry on as you are OP and enjoy your porridge Smile
