To not ‘pay my way’?

LeLavandou · 10/05/2020 08:29

By not paying for Mumsnet Premium and using an ad blocker. Is that ‘not paying my way’ as Justine Roberts suggested on the MN premium thread in Site Stuff?
Does this make me a freeloader, if I still use MN and just block the ads? Given I only use the talk boards where content is produced by users, where does this stand in the MN freeloader stakes?

Not only email but Twitter and Facebook as well threads are advertised.

Not seen the thread(s) about premium picked up though....

usernotknown · 10/05/2020 14:29

Another thread started by that other site to stir up trouble on here. Hmm

TigerQueenie · 10/05/2020 14:32

And another thing which has rankled a bit is the fact that functionality exists for some things but they have chosen not to make it available. Like quoting - MNHQ staff have the quote post function, but nobody else can have it, despite many requests over the years.

DivGirl · 10/05/2020 14:40

@usernotknown I don't think "that other site" has enough members to fill 7 pages worth of coherent and rational arguments against paying for a website where the users are already the product.

But hey - whatever fits your narrative.

MagnificentMillie · 10/05/2020 14:42

I don’t get the angst about it, pay or don’t pay. As I said previously , I got banned simply for asking for my account to be deleted and my data on the other site.
I have never been banned from anywhere in my life before.

I don’t care, I am not interested in rejoining or having some sort of vendetta against that site.

As long as it doesn’t go the way of the cyber bully club of Reddit I don’t care.

The endless angst and threads about it are not achieving anything.

Mumsnet will survive, and whilst I appreciate the point about a two tier system, there has always been that to a degree with certain posters who seem to get away with more than others.

It’s not worth worrying about.

MagnificentMillie · 10/05/2020 14:45

@DivGirl I think it probably was started by someone from the other site. No one is saying that all the people commenting here are from there though.

I get that people are bored in lockdown but it seems such a pointless thing to do.

usernotknown · 10/05/2020 14:48

It was started by someone from the other site. But meh, pay or don't pay.Stay here or post somewhere else. It's a chat site, it's not that important.

Spiffingly · 10/05/2020 14:54

if i walked up and down outside your house for 6 months with a large sign advertising kitchens, then knocked on your door and asked for £50 to go away, i highly doubt i’d make much money.

But you would actually go away, just be there less often if you were following MNHQs premium offer!

WikkiTikkiWoo · 10/05/2020 15:00

Justine will hardly be worrying about to pay the bills and feeding her family at the moment like so many other families are.. I would rather give spare money to those that truly will, and are, struggling a the moment.

SeriouslyRetro · 10/05/2020 15:04

I recall reading the thread for a plea for cash and really feeling the tone was completely...well, they didn’t read the room well at all.

WikkiTikkiWoo · 10/05/2020 15:04

@MagnificentMillie

As long as it doesn’t go the way of the cyber bully club of Reddit I don’t care.

That's hilarious. The bullying I see here is often a damned site worse than at Reddit. I came here, many years ago, as a scared new mum with a seriously ill baby, and asked for advice. I had so many posters tell me it was, basically my fault for x or y, with NO understanding that not everyone lived the perfect little middle class life they did. That I was a bad mother as I didn't feel able to get up at 4am and bake fresh bread and "why ask for help if you won't do this".
(and no, this wasn't on AIBU). I'd much rather ask on Reddit!

Tappering · 10/05/2020 15:07

And the whole fewer adverts for premium schtick completely falls over when people can just use an ad-blocker for free. It only gains traction if MN intend to make the site whitelist only.

I suspect that Justine knows that she's not in a position to do that, as adverts are currently so intrusive and have such a bad effect on page loading. Add that to other long-standing annoyances - not being able to edit or quote posts, inconsistent moderation, ongoing technical issues, concerns about security and privacy - and users would start to drop away quite significantly. On the issue of inconsistent/opaque moderation alone, there's already been a surge in membership of another site following the whole PS/This Morning debacle.

MagnificentMillie · 10/05/2020 15:08

@ WikkiTikkiWoo it wasn’t hilarious for me given that some of them followed me round on here, posted a list of all my past usernames and doxxed three other mumsnetters. Laugh away though.

MagnificentMillie · 10/05/2020 15:10

Hence my loyalty to mumsnet, they dealt with it, the mods of Reddit actually joined in.

MagnificentMillie · 10/05/2020 15:12

Or maybe you are talking about Reddit generally rather than a specific sub? In which case I agree that there are some lovely posters on Reddit.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 10/05/2020 15:16

Eh?
Pay or don't pay, you don't have to!
It's hardly freeloading Confused

lyralalala · 10/05/2020 15:23

@bridgetreilly And I am certain that they are not all being paid £35k a MONTH. £350k suggests to me a staff of around 100 people. And that, I'm afraid, is ridiculous.

There is around 100 staff apparently

I would have donated an amout to a crowd-funder type thing that could have been done without giving over all my details, but Justine's comments that that would have potentially led to a feeling of a two-tier system, combined with the timing, showed me she doesn't know her user base at all. An actual two-tier system is better, in her mind, than donations. Totally bizarre

Not to mention the staff numbers - how does a website with a team of people have such poor functionality? Not to mention relying on volunteer mods overnight.

It's funny how there has been so many posts and threads critical of furlough on a site where the majority of their staff have been furloughed.

JulesM73 · 10/05/2020 15:23

I won’t pay, I don’t trust them with my data and the whole intern situation was a disgrace.

The wage bill is too high, and the cost of £50 for ‘less’ ads is a rip off. If they then start to offer a premium vs a second tier service I’ll just go elsewhere.

Purpletigers · 10/05/2020 15:23

I like mn because of the posters . There are so many incredibly articulate, intelligent and hilarious people on here . I wouldn’t pay for something I can get free in lots of other places .
I don’t use an adblocker ! I don’t know how to and I’m not easily swayed by advertising anyway .

WikkiTikkiWoo · 10/05/2020 15:24

@MagnificentMillie

And I didn't find the way I was treated here very funny. As such, I've never actually asked for help or advice here again, or taken Mumsnet seriously in any shape or form. Most of my friends have the rule "never advise a new mum to use Mumsnet" as it's not a place for someone who might be fragile. At least Reddit doesn't sell itself on being a supportive, kind environment.

Purpletigers · 10/05/2020 15:25

And 350k a month wages ?

GigiLamour · 10/05/2020 15:35

They PAY the guest bloggers?!

Surely not. I assumed the guest bloggers were paying Mumsnet for exposure. Similar to the "sponsored threads" (which I also avoid).

If they're really paying those guest bloggers, then they should cut that out right now because nobody is here for that. Jeez.

Vicbarbarkley · 10/05/2020 15:55

Is the 'other' site Reddit or Netmums? Because both have large numbers of people capable of running a thread for numerous pages😞
I am guessing its not....
But I guess if you tell me you will have to shoot me?

I am always in the fucking dark 😂

@Vicbarbarkley the other place is mums dot chat, as I have been so kindly told.
Obviously, that is a . not dot Grin, typing out the correct address results in immediate deletion.
