I'm genuinely intrigued as to why so many people say the queen. Do people outside the UK really know or care that much about our monarch? There are lots of royal families in the world and I couldn't pick out many heads of state bar maybe Monaco.

Probably Trump or Madonna if we're talking about the living. Jacko and Hitler if we're talking about the dead.

Well everyone in the world who watched the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games will know who she is, everyone who has ever seen any Sterling currency or any of our stamps, all those millions of people living in Commonwealth and former Commonwealth countries, and that's just for starters.

When I was in a very remote part of Borneo a number of local people were so excited I was British because I may know Mr Bean or, at the very least confirm he was alive/an actual person.

I agree. It's odd that so many people think this. The UK really isn't that important!

Judging from a lot of international people I've met, our royal family is particularly well known. I don't think that it's British arrogance to suggest the queen. She is very famous. What about Michael Jackson? Though maybe he doesn't count as he's dead.

I do. She is famous, but actually, I don't think she would be particularly well recognised in any of the other countries where I've lived. Perhaps with her crown on, she might.

I agree that Mr Bean is very well known internationally. I doubt many people would have a clue who Rowan Atkinson is though!

Putin is probably pretty famous, but I still think Trump would be the most recognised. Perhaps followed by Obama?

But she has been around a very long time. I don't think there is any other head of state still alive who has been in their position as long as she has. For that reason alone I think there is a strong chance that she would be recognised by many people around the world.

I don't think Madonna now. Lots of young people wouldn't have a clue who she is.

David Beckham was very famous 15-20 years ago. I doubt he'd be as well recognised now.
