Ds 18 has just asked me who I think the most famous person in the world is...
Who do you think?

We are the only country in the world that doesn't need to have the country's name on our stamps.

There is a reason for that. Look at a stamp and you'll see why. Smile

YourVagesty · 09/05/2020 23:49

I think Elvis is probably universally known.

The Queen is always in disaster movies - when they are getting the world's most important people into the underground bunkers or into the spaceships etc. It's always the queen and some generic middle eastern /Russian oil barons

DartmoorChef · 09/05/2020 23:49

Alive
The Queen. She is the longest reigning living monarch in the world.

Dead
Princess Diana

YourVagesty · 09/05/2020 23:50

AlexaShutUp, it's on Netflix

AlexaShutUp · 10/05/2020 00:00

Thanks YourVajesty. I will have to investigate!

123Dancewithme · 10/05/2020 01:43

Ronaldo or Messi

managedmis · 10/05/2020 02:26

Man United

IPityThePontipines · 10/05/2020 02:28

The Queen

And also the other great monarch, Freddie Mercury.

HollowTalk · 10/05/2020 08:49

@AlexaShutUp it's on Netflix- it's her book tour. Really enjoyed it.

Maryann1975 · 10/05/2020 09:26

I'm genuinely intrigued as to why so many people say the queen. Do people outside the UK really know or care that much about our monarch?
I’d say the Queen too. She’s head of the commonwealth and until more recent years would do tours of these countries, so I guess there would be some public recognition of her in these places.

Another pp asked if we think other countries really care about our monarch, the number of foreign tourists around Buckingham palace tells me that they are interested.

RainMustFall · 10/05/2020 09:45

I think the Queen. It's not British arrogance but if you take the population of all the countries of the Commonwealth and we know there are a lot of fans in the US, I don't think it's an unreasonable suggestion.

Isawamagpie · 10/05/2020 09:47

Michael Jackson - especially a photo from the glory days, he seems to be known in even the most remote of places.

CroissantsAtDawn · 10/05/2020 09:49

Id say Queen too because she's been around for so many decades and has travelled the world many times over.

I worked in former East Germany 20 years ago. The children recognized the Queen but were unable to say who their President was.

whatwitchcraft · 10/05/2020 09:54

I would say a famous footballer, not up on current footballers or maybe, because of India's population, a cricketer. I've travelled to many remote places, although when the internet was less widely available, and common taxi driver language was usually footballers e.g. 'Beckham' followed by a thumbs up. In contrast, I once showed a woman in Central Asia, can't remember which country, a postcard with a picture of the Queen on it and she asked if it was my grandmother.

EthelMayFergus · 10/05/2020 09:58

Probably Trump.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was the Queen though, I went on holiday to Turkey about twenty years ago, and in a restaurant the table mats had pictures on them of Buckingham Palace and the Queen. In another bar there were pictures of her on the walls.

Chillipeanuts · 10/05/2020 10:03

probably Trump 🙄

HaddawayAndShite · 10/05/2020 10:08

I don’t think it’s arrogant to suggest Queen Elizabeth 2 (calling her The Queen is more arrogant imo, there are others), unless it is also arrogant for an American to suggest Trump / Obama et al. These are world leaders, they have notoriety worldwide, and as Queen Elizabeth 2 has served the longest, she spans more generations than others, the commonwealth factor, she has the most reproduced portrait in the world and you only have to look at royal events to see how other countries react (Will and Kate’s wedding for example had a worldwide audience).

That being said, with internet etc, the definition of famous really does change, taking into consideration age groups and social economic factors too. Hitler might be up there if we’re taking dead people to. Jesus Christ has the most name recognition (if you believe he was a real person).

tartanbow · 10/05/2020 10:11

not alive - Michael Jackson all day long.

alive - Donald Trump or the Queen

Midsommar · 10/05/2020 10:50

I'd say MJ or Elvis

CatBatCat · 10/05/2020 11:04

Ghandi

jay55 · 10/05/2020 11:43

Kim Jong-Un
