ScrewBalls99 · 09/05/2020 12:08

Just wondering whether with all the street parties yesterday anyone else wondering whether we will see a blip in number of CV cases in a couple of weeks? Or do you think it has died out following lockdown so far?

If people got close enough to transmit it we will see a rise.
I don't believe coronavirus has died out, no.Hmm

YouTheCat · 09/05/2020 12:13

There will be more than a 'blip' of cases in the next 2 weeks and then a large rise in deaths a few weeks after that.

Perfidy · 09/05/2020 12:15

It doesn't die out. There just aren't as many people out to catch it or transmit it unless closely together. But it's ok because scones, tea, bunting and vera Lynn protect you.

Makegoodchoices · 09/05/2020 12:17

I expect so - drinking leads to lack of caution. There was certainly a bit of that I could see.

Ohffs66 · 09/05/2020 12:17

I saw a facebook post from a local nurse earlier today. She was so upset and frustrated...our A&E was full of drunken people with head injuries and broken arms / legs last night. So yes I think we will have a blip in a few weeks time. People just can't be trusted.

GrumpyHoonMain · 09/05/2020 12:19

Nobody was restricted to the end of their drives here - in many streets all the neighbours were crowded together, no social distancing at all. There will definitely be a spike.

PilatesPeach · 09/05/2020 12:19

Speaking to my GP friend earlier, he is of the opinion that it is far too early to ease lockdown, that it is an economic decision & that there will be a second peak. He did say, however, that for the overwhelming majority of people who catch it (and it is EXTREMELY virulent) the illness will be mild/moderate and will recover fine. He also said re the asymptomic cases, these are predominantly in the under 16s with maybe some in the under 35s but not really in the rest of the population. He is also of the opinion that a vaccine for the population is a long way off - not this year as some reports in the papers seem to suggest.

Appuskidu · 09/05/2020 12:19

Definitely. It will also have a huge impact on all those ‘relaxing of lockdown measures‘ that people are hoping for on June 1st as well.

AllieAct · 09/05/2020 12:21

It’s incredibly frustrating.

It’s partially the government/media’s fault for their messaging but people should know better. There’s still hundreds of people dying every day.

bridgetreilly · 09/05/2020 12:22

I think there'll be some easing of restrictions announced tomorrow and so I think it will be impossible to tell what came from yesterday and what follows.

rosiethehen · 09/05/2020 12:22

Yes, but drunken sentimentality comes first so.......

cardibach · 09/05/2020 12:26

@bridgetreilly that’s my fear. There’ll be a spike and they’ll assume it’s the lockdown easing causing it, so take it away again, when in fact it was yesterday’s nonsense causing the issue.

FraughtwithGin · 09/05/2020 12:26

There is bound to be a spike, not least because people do not know they have the virus in the first place.

isittheholidaysyet · 09/05/2020 12:35

My village was buzzing yesterday. The atmosphere was fab. Lots of decorated houses and street parties.

However everyone seemed to be very socially distanced.
Lots of people took their daily exercise as a walk around the village, but to be honest, there didn't seem to be more walkers than usual, just lots of people on their drives to wave to as you went past.

If this causes a spike from our village, we are absolutely screwed. Because it means any slight let up of lockdown will be a disaster.

MumW · 09/05/2020 12:39

Our street was generally well behaved although 2m seemed to get shorter as the afternoon wore on.
I still think there was less risk than going to a supermarket where you've nowhere to step back from when an idiot ignores the rules.

ScrewBalls99 · 09/05/2020 12:49

**Pefidy - But it's ok because scones, tea, bunting and vera Lynn protect you. - 😝😁

Interesting, thanks PilatesPeach

The idea was that people stuck to their own gardens, which I think they mostly did, but I wasn't everywhere so I don't know. If people were sensible and stuck to the social distancing idea then no we won't see a spike. If they didn't we might we'll see one. Maybe bump the thread in 2 weeks' time out of interest?

ScrewBalls99 · 09/05/2020 12:55

Isittheholidaysyet 'If this causes a spike from our village, we are absolutely screwed. Because it means any slight let up of lockdown will be a disaster.' - this thought is a really good one, will be interesting to wait and see outcome

People said the same about the Easter weekend. There wasn’t a surge in English hospitals.

www.england.nhs.uk/statistics/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2020/05/COVID-19-total-announced-deaths-8-May-2020.xlsx

It’s like some people actively want there to be a major surge.

MorrisZapp · 09/05/2020 12:58

Of course there won't be a spike, much as it would validate the huffty puffties. Kids are off school. Vast swathes of the nation are furloughed or wfh. Streets and shops look post apocalyptic. Nobody has shaken hands since February. Everyone is keeping much cleaner.

A few drunks overstepping will not lead to a spike at population level. I'm unconvinced that you can catch it from standing near someone outside anyway but we'll find out more about that later no doubt.

DOINGOURBIT · 09/05/2020 12:59

After witnessing drunken antics to 3am this morning, including hugging, kissing and conga between four sets of neighbours - I am utterly disgusted. Never again shall i utter even a good morning to them. These are the people that bang their saucepans every Thursday evening for the NHS, and now disrespectfully might be adding to their workload. Thoroughly disgusting. Selfish, selfish, neighbours the lot of them.

Appuskidu · 09/05/2020 13:00

Streets and shops look post apocalyptic

I wonder where you live?! That certainly Doesn’t describe what it looks like around here the last two weeks.

BirdieFriendReturns · 09/05/2020 13:02

Whilst it’s virulent, it’s not extremely virulent like measles, smallpox or polio.

Sparklesocks · 09/05/2020 13:02

I think it depends, if your street party was actually socially distanced and people were sensible and didn’t share crockery/food/drinks etc - you’ll probably be fine.

But then if you’re on the news standing shoulder to shoulder, or that street who made a ‘socially distant conga’ which consisted of all holding the same rope and actively dancing into each other’s breath - then you might be in trouble.
