VE get togethers...will we see blip in CV?

Just wondering whether with all the street parties yesterday anyone else wondering whether we will see a blip in number of CV cases in a couple of weeks? Or do you think it has died out following lockdown so far?

OP posts:

I live in Edinburgh. I walked through the centre of town last week and it was positively eerie. My city is permanently heaving with tourists usually, with brisk trade in every shop in town. Now they're all closed and nobody is there. The difference is unbelievable. How anyone can say 'nothings changed' is just ridiculous to me.

MorrisZapp · 09/05/2020 13:05

And there has been a predicted spike every sunny day since lockdown on here. Also 'am I missing something' threads whenever people's neighbours go for a walk.

Yet no spike has materialised, much to some people's disappointment.

Alsohuman · 09/05/2020 13:06

If there isn’t an upturn in cases, I suspect a lot of people on MN will be deeply disappointed at losing their opportunity to nod sagely and tell us they were right.

megletthesecond · 09/05/2020 13:08

We'll know in a month.

No it's ok, as VE DAY would protect you,as in, we are all at peace now, and the war is over.. Maybe not so for later, as so many people are desperate to go on their holidays it seems, and then they will all be crowding into germ laden aircraft, all be closely contained, and the virus will inevitably be still around.

PilatesPeach · 09/05/2020 13:14

Tue, not as virulent as measles or polio but both of which are routinely vaccinated against (unless parents of children refuse) and smallpox vaccination was stopped in the 70s after cases died out so without a vaccine for Covid 19, it is more of a risk to the population currently than those other diseases.

Ponoka7 · 09/05/2020 13:30

MorrisZapp, i would love to live somewhere like Edinburgh to see the difference. I'm a fan of zombie apocalypse stuff and it would help me imagine that.

Around my way people are fed up and around last week, started to mix. There's only slightly less traffic about. On VE day there was no social distancing, once people started drinking. By 8pm they were in each other's houses. I think we'll see a spike. We are in Liverpool, we have been hit quite hard and adult patients have been moved to Alderhey and other hospitals outside of general medicine. So we know that we are overwhelmed. We are all starting to know someone whose relative have died and familiar faces from bus drivers to market traders have died. So it's not because people ' don't believe in it'.

I won't go into small local shops outside of half an hour at opening and before closing because they are crowded and no one is socially distancing.

MintyMabel · 09/05/2020 13:36

Speaking to my GP friend earlier, he is of the opinion that

When I was in Uni, my flatmate's father was a GP. He believed white people had bigger brains therefore were the most intelligent race. Being a GP doesn't make you more knowledgable. Your GP friend has no more information to go on than the rest of us. I wouldn't assume they are automatically correct.

Iwantamarshmallowman · 09/05/2020 13:44

My neighbours crowded together every Thursday night to clap the nhs taking up the whole pavement so noone can get past while social distancing unless u go into the road. I saw lots of pics on facebook of people not social distancing a sharing food. Do they think cv doesnt apply to them if they are outside People are stupid.

PilatesPeach · 09/05/2020 13:48

Not assuming he is automatically correct MintyMable we are just discussing matters on a Corona thread and people are talking about their experiences and what they have seen or heard thanks

AllieAct · 09/05/2020 13:51

I suspect there may be another spike but I really hope there isn’t. Two of my siblings are key workers who are facing the consequences of the virus (literally facing) every day.

The part of town I live in was quiet last night but when I went for a run my route took me through more residential streets and some of them were heaving - I really hope there is no impact.

Truthpact · 09/05/2020 13:51

Probably see a spike in Middlesborough if that street party going around fb is how the rest of them celebrated yesterday.

AllieAct · 09/05/2020 13:51

(I obviously turned around and headed out of busy streets rather than adding to it!)

borntohula · 09/05/2020 13:56

As others have said, seems as though some people would delight in a 'spike' of cases/deaths. I wonder, if there isn't one, will they admit they were wrong??

BirdieFriendReturns · 09/05/2020 13:57

I’m still waiting for the Easter spike that didn’t happen.

PilatesPeach · 09/05/2020 13:59

I hope there is not a 2nd spike - I work in the leisure sector so am likely to be one of the last people to return to work even without a second spike and unfortunately became self-employed at the wrong time to benefit from the Chancellor's scheme. No one wants second spike.

TerrapinStation · 09/05/2020 13:59

I'm going to go for no, we won't see a noticable spike. Even now that the number of tests are so much higher we aren't seeing increasing numbers of infections. The number of infected people who aren't aware that they have it must be decreasing every day and imo the main areas of risk remain hospitals and care homes neither of whose residents were out and about yesterday.

HammerToFall · 09/05/2020 14:01

I was working in A&E last night. 17 patients admitted with intoxication in my first four hours. Makes me want to scream!

Gawdsake2020 · 09/05/2020 14:04

I feel sorry for the NHS staff working yesterday that had to deal with all the piss heads in A&E whilst dealing with Covid19.
I’m in a region where barely anyone is socially distancing (espically last night) there will be spike here in two weeks.. maybe not a big spike as different areas behave differently but here for sure!

cologne4711 · 09/05/2020 14:08

I still think there was less risk than going to a supermarket where you've nowhere to step back from when an idiot ignores the rules

you don't catch it from someone passing close to you unless they cough or sneeze all over you. The aisles aren't even 2m wide in most cases, so it's impossible to avoid coming close to people for a second when passing them.

Whilst it’s virulent, it’s not extremely virulent like measles, smallpox or polio I had the same thought.

bigbluebus · 09/05/2020 14:26

I've said online to a few people today that I think yesterday's behaviour will lead to another spike. The blatant disregard for the social distancing rules around my area by some was astounding - including one party with overnight guests involving a family where one adult is a police officer. Even those who declared they were sticking to the rules posted video footage which clearly showed people sharing food and drink, small children roaming around and people from different households sitting less than 2m apart. I won't be going into my village shop for a while in case they do!

GabriellaMontez · 09/05/2020 14:30

Grin at minty

At least we've got a man's opinion now too.

GabriellaMontez · 09/05/2020 14:31

People said this at easter. They were desperate to see a big spike. No we won't.

Oblomov20 · 09/05/2020 14:45

There will be a huge spike. Pissed people ignoring the 2m rule. But like pp said protected by Vera lynn ! Hmm
