AIBU?

To wonder how something this big can disappear?

A few weeks ago, DP cleared out the cupboard where all the pots and pans live, gave it a thorough clean and put everything back. Well, almost everything.

I have (had?) a large stainless steel carving plate, the sort with spikes to hold a joint of meat and a recess for the meat juices to drain into. It'll take a big sized turkey or whole gammon, so it's pretty big. It has lived in the pots and pans cupboard for 20 years.

I roasted a chicken last night and because I'm crap at carving I always use the spikey plate. It wasn't home. Shock I asked DP where he'd put it. He intially denied ever having seen it, then started looking in other places in the kitchen, including on the tops of the wall cupboards. It is nowhere to be seen.

It's not in any of the drawers or cupboards. It's not even in the Cupboard of Doom where all sorts of mysterious stuff gets shoved when we have to have a panic clear up because someone's invited themselves round at short notice. He couldn't possibly have thrown it away, unless he did it in his sleep, because he knows I use it.

How the fuck can something approx 20" x 14" and 2" deep possibly disappear?

I'm unfeasibly attached to it too, I bought it just before I cooked my first Christmas dinner in 1975, so it's practically an antique, and much heavier gauge steel than modern ones.

If and when it eventually turns up, WIBU to ram it up DP's arse, spikes and all?

Underneath bottom drawer/cabinet. Behind drawers?

Found a toy car jammed behind radiator recently - it must have been there 15+ years.

Now if anyones found my electric tile cutter.......

It's between two baking trays, separate everything when you check in the cupboard again.

I also think it's standing up on side some where - in cupboard where can't be seem easily. Buy another one and it will appear.

I had this with my patty tin, that I use only for Yorkshire puds. It turned up about 8 weeks later exactly where it always was but definitely wasn't when I'd looked before

Did he put it under the pans that he put back in the cupboard?

I used to work for an company and a huge sheet of metal went missing. Hunted high and low. It was found leaning up against a wall with boxes stacked in front.

Same company. Lost a computer (back in the day when they were chunky beasts. It came in a big box and was, apparently, the perfect size for a table...

It is in the same place as my Christmas tree stand. In the bin.

That is how my ex also had a clean up.

Do people’s DHs really just bin things without checking what they are/if they’re needed?!

I was thinking exactly the same. How do you live happily with men who do this? It would drive me insane!

YY to a pp's suggestion to look in your cooker. The warming oven of my Aga tends to hide pans for weeks on end.

I lost a big enamel chicken roasting tray (still have the lid) about 6 months ago - completely disappeared!

@cate16
What a lovely offer.

I call my husband "the ghost".....we have lived in this house 20+ years and he still empties the dishwasher and sometimes puts things back in strange places.

It makes me want to bludgeon him to death.....but then I talk myself down, remind myself how good he is and say "breath Billy breath"🤣

Sometimes preparing a meal is like hunt the thimble. I open the cupboard/drawer where I keep whatever it is I need to find it's not there and usually if it's got component parts, each part has been given a new home apart from one which is stashed on top of a cupboard in the utility room. I end up opening every drawer and cupboard that I have in my quest to cook dinner!

I also think DH has disposed of it, either deliberately because he doesnt use it or by putting it somewhere else in your kitchen.

Please accept the lovely kind offer from another poster. I am always so thrilled when things find a perfect new home.

My DH never throws anything away, at all, ever, even if it's broken. I don't dare let him come to the tip with me, he would come home with more stuff than we took there in the first place.

Hope you find your carving dish soon OP.

DH does this. As long as something is put away it doesn’t matter where.
I once lost a clothes airer (in a flat) after he put it “away”

TonTonMacoute, are we married to the same man? Can there be two of them? It is a nightmare isn't it, I long to live in a house with hardly anything in it. When he gets man flu and reckons he's dying I tell him I'm ordering the skip for the massive clearout I'm planning. It generally gets him cured pretty fast.

Another vote for "its on it's side in the rack with the oven trays etc" and a massive thumbs down for "your husband binned it and is now lying about it" - why would you marry someone like that!?

It will have gone to the same place as a child’s crown for the school play and the large box of Thornton’s chocolates I bought before Xmas and gave DC to hide because I didn't trust myself.

More recently out here in Spain DH has thrown out the main part of my favourite plastic storage container for the freezer. Left me the lid .

I second the suggestion that it could be on its side in the cupboard and you just haven't spotted it. I've done this before - some things just look different than you expect from the side.

He didn't know what it was and thought it looked very old so just binned it.
That's the most likely scenario - now he's claiming he knows nothing about it.
Another possibility is that he's put it back with baking trays in another cupboard.

Report
VisionQuest · 09/05/2020 11:14

Yep I also think he's lying OP and he's binned it. From what you said he did the fake 'search every cupboard, side and shelf' routine!
