To wonder how something this big can disappear?

A few weeks ago, DP cleared out the cupboard where all the pots and pans live, gave it a thorough clean and put everything back. Well, almost everything.

I have (had?) a large stainless steel carving plate, the sort with spikes to hold a joint of meat and a recess for the meat juices to drain into. It'll take a big sized turkey or whole gammon, so it's pretty big. It has lived in the pots and pans cupboard for 20 years.

I roasted a chicken last night and because I'm crap at carving I always use the spikey plate. It wasn't home. Shock I asked DP where he'd put it. He intially denied ever having seen it, then started looking in other places in the kitchen, including on the tops of the wall cupboards. It is nowhere to be seen.

It's not in any of the drawers or cupboards. It's not even in the Cupboard of Doom where all sorts of mysterious stuff gets shoved when we have to have a panic clear up because someone's invited themselves round at short notice. He couldn't possibly have thrown it away, unless he did it in his sleep, because he knows I use it.

How the fuck can something approx 20" x 14" and 2" deep possibly disappear?

I'm unfeasibly attached to it too, I bought it just before I cooked my first Christmas dinner in 1975, so it's practically an antique, and much heavier gauge steel than modern ones.

If and when it eventually turns up, WIBU to ram it up DP's arse, spikes and all?

Your husband knows where it is. He's dumped it, I'd put money in it. My DH is forever squirrelling things away that I need and use all the time.
'DH, have you seen Thing That I Need and Use All the Time?'
'I put it conveniently in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet, in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard.'

JasonPollack · 09/05/2020 09:51

Another vote for: he didn't know what it was so he threw it away and now he's shitting it so hasn't said anything.

notreallybotheredaboutausernam · 09/05/2020 09:52

I lost a radiator. We'd taken 2 off for redecorating. Then I split up with exh and the decorating got left to one side. A year or so later i came to finish it off. Can't find the radiator anywhere. It's a big old one. I even accused the ex of having taken it but he swears not.

Choice4567 · 09/05/2020 09:53

@LakieLady please get @cate16’s, it’s such a sweet lockdown sort of story!

Unravellingslowly · 09/05/2020 09:53

Do people’s DHs really just bin things without checking what they are/if they’re needed?

Yep. It’s bloody annoying and I chew his ear off every time yet he still does it. It’s baffling. It’s not like I would go into the garage and dispose of a vital piece of his socket set.

Heaviestdirtyestsoul · 09/05/2020 09:54

It's in the same place as an entire wooden toy chest full of toys- a large one- just vanished 😳

pussycatinboots · 09/05/2020 09:54

I think he 's chucked it.

bluebell34567 · 09/05/2020 09:54

Your husband knows where it is. He's dumped it agree with that. i can understand from him denying even seeing it.
or did you store it somewhere else?

IWouldDie4U · 09/05/2020 09:56

Your DP threw it out and won’t admit to it. Mine does that - slightly different circumstances (usually involves burning food) then denies all knowledge.

BertiesLanding · 09/05/2020 09:56

It’s not like I would go into the garage and dispose of a vital piece of his socket set.

I so would, though!

TurtleTortoise · 09/05/2020 09:56

cate16 Well I just found one - still in the box, which I had 40 years ago as a wedding present, please let me know if you would like it as I haven't a clue why I still have it.

There it is, OP! Clearly slipped through a hole in space and time and appeared in cate's house wrapped and unused.

Ninkanink · 09/05/2020 09:56

My DH wouldn’t dream of getting rid of any of my/our things without checking with me. But apparently some do...

heylittlehenwhenwhenwhen · 09/05/2020 09:56

Bottom of the oven?

Ninkanink · 09/05/2020 09:57

@Unravellingslowly tbh I think you should do that. Every time he does it he needs a taste of his own medicine...might make him think!

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 09/05/2020 09:59

It’s not like I would go into the garage and dispose of a vital piece of his socket set.

Perhaps you should. He might take you more seriously then!

Doilooklikeatourist · 09/05/2020 10:00

I lost the lid to the Big Saucepan , the one that only gets used if / when I make jam
It was on its side in the cupboard where the Kitchenaid is kept , standing up neatly , so even when I used the mixer ( every couple of days ) I didn't see it
It might be standing up , rather than lying down in a cupboard somewhere ... or he’s chucked it out , my DH is a hoarder though so it’s a difficult one

Gemma2019 · 09/05/2020 10:00

Maybe it's underneath the drawer rather than behind, and you need to take the drawer out. Or bottom of the oven or behind the fridge.

But more likely in landfill somewhere and he's waiting for you to stop mentioning it.

The80sweregreat · 09/05/2020 10:00

I think he has thrown it out by mistake and too scared to own up ! Hope you find it

HeronLanyon · 09/05/2020 10:04

I think it may have been thrown out by mistake.
I would also try under and behind all cabinets/fridge etc.
In the freezer/in the oven.
In garden shed/garage if you have as he may have randomly put it there with other things being sorted/chucked.
Does he have a tool type cupboard. Could he have thought of a diy use for it in a mad moment and put it there. Or in the car ?
Good luck.
While you’re looking please keep an eye out for the ironing board which went missing and provided an excellent thread a while ago.

Difficultcustomer · 09/05/2020 10:08

If he threw it out do you think he’s bought a new one online and is waiting for it to arrive before he admits what he did?

Ouchjuststoodonlego · 09/05/2020 10:13

Have you checked the outside bins or wherever he put the stuff to be chucked. Tips and charity shops are closed so it can't have gone far. Can it?

The80sweregreat · 09/05/2020 10:14

Let us know if it shows up !

AppearingNormal · 09/05/2020 10:14

Are you posh with one of those big range cookers and he's stuck it in one of the ovens ?

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 09/05/2020 10:14

I have a similar plate that is likely of a similar age to yours OP. Mine is much smaller though and was given to me by my grandma. It's so sturdy and the perfect size for a roast chicken.

I do hope yours turns up, I couldn't be without mine.

Veronicat · 09/05/2020 10:19

Its probably gone off with mine. I can't find mine either. I suspect DH recycled mine when he had a clear out before lockdown. It's so annoying as I use it constantly and would like it back.
