To think the commute is not too much for this job?

Dranktoomuchpepsi · 08/05/2020 13:20

The job is 27-30 miles away. 5k salary increase. I think it would be fine. DH says not a good idea (too far a commute time). We have 1 DC who would be in nursery whilst I'm working.

DH can't do drop off/pick up as he doesn't drive.

AIBU to think it's okay? Or is it too much of a commute? Not London, no.

How long will it take at rush hour?

DonnaDarko · 08/05/2020 13:23

It depends on your working hours, nursery hours and how long the commute is.

With us, we absolutely needed at least one of us to be local.

ChandlerIsTheBestFriend · 08/05/2020 13:23

How much would it cost you in extra fuel, wear and tear on the car, extra childcare? Probably more than the £96 a week extra the job pays. Add onto that the time loss of travelling. Wouldn’t be worth it for me.

Dranktoomuchpepsi · 08/05/2020 13:25

I'm not currently working full time so it's just a guide. I can't actually get FT hours in my current role.

Not sure how long it would take with regards to rush hour. It says from here to there is 33 mins. But that isn't rush hour

30 miles isn't that helpful. 30 miles of empty motorway is very different from 30 miles across the other side of London. 30 miles with a really good train service is very different from 30 miles involving 4 buses and a walk. How long will it take and how stressful will the journey be?

justdontatme · 08/05/2020 13:26

Need more info. I used to commute 40miles, it took 1.45 hrs on public transport. That doesn’t fit with needing to do all drop off & pick ups.

RedskyAtnight · 08/05/2020 13:26

The time taken to get there is more relevant than the distance.
Including the time to drop off/pick up DC if you're the one doing that.

How much extra will the commute cost you in fuel, wear on tear on car etc? Are there reasons for wanting the new job (sector you want to move into, more likelihood of career progression etc) other than the increased salary?

Dranktoomuchpepsi · 08/05/2020 13:27

I'm really not sure how long it'd realistically take. Can't find much info online. It is mostly motorway from here to there though

Could DH do nursery run on a bike?

justdontatme · 08/05/2020 13:28

Well, let’s say it takes 45 mins. What are your hours? What hours does nursery open?

Dranktoomuchpepsi · 08/05/2020 13:28

No DH would not do nursery run on a bike

I'm really not sure how long it'd realistically take.

You kind of need to know that information.

Graphista · 08/05/2020 13:29

That's a fair distance for not a lot of salary increase have you checked the transport costs?

I've done a quick calculation based on my old car ave mpg and a journey of roughly same length. Cost is £9 approx per day (there and back) based on working an average of 22 days a month that's £2376 on fuel alone. Add in parking, wear and tear on the car and I can easily see the £5k salary increase being wiped out.

You'll also have a longer day and be more tired and have less time for leisure.

Doesn't seem worth it to me

Dranktoomuchpepsi · 08/05/2020 13:29

just our nursey opens at 7.30am. Hours are 9 to 5.30.

I usually pick DH up most days at 5.30 so couldn't do that anymore

I'd post a message on a local (e.g.) FB group and ask what travel from to is like at .

My suspicion is that the journey time is probably over an hour at rush hour, but it might be that you're going against the flow of traffic or will be leaving earlier/later than the main block of traffic. I wouldn't be worth it for me on salary alone, but maybe the job has other important features?

JKScot4 · 08/05/2020 13:30

Why don’t you give the area and maybe some pp know the route and level of traffic in normal times.

justdontatme · 08/05/2020 13:32

Put your journey times into google maps & see what it says as a rough guide. I assume nursery closes at 6?

JuniLoolaPalooza · 08/05/2020 13:32

In my city during rush hour, it can take 45 mins to do the two miles to get to the motorway, 2 miles from my house. It doesn't sound like it would be worth it driving.

Phineyj · 08/05/2020 13:32

I think if one of you doesn't drive, you need to consider using a nursery accessible by public transport, otherwise it's too much burden on the one parent.

Yes I think a long commute and being the only driver together is a problem. What would you do if the car broke down, the motorway shut or it started to snow? Do you have backup? DH and I used a nursery in my parents' town rather than our home town or either of our work locations, for this reason.

D1stancet00far · 08/05/2020 13:33

I used to commute a similar distance for several years

No traffic approx 35 mins one way

Bad traffic up to 3-4 hours one way
Back roads clogged up, as well as the motorway. People tan out of petrol

If you are going to do it in a car, ensure that you have breakdown cover. Carry food & drink. A blanket for the winter

Worst was my colleague spent 12 hours getting home once when it snowed unexpectedly ! And caused chaos !

Phineyj · 08/05/2020 13:34

And our neighbours use a workplace nursery (one of them doesn't drive) and then hired a nanny who drives.

BadSmellsHelp101 · 08/05/2020 13:36

What about career progression prospects? That would be important to me.

I’ve doubled my commute (40 miles) and took a drop in income (by like 10-15k) because that’s the norm at this stage before moving onto the jobs which have higher salary. It’s only for 1 year and my next post is within walking distance and then I can apply to move onto the next stage.

ChandlerIsTheBestFriend · 08/05/2020 13:36

Post the start and end locations here. I’m sure someone will have done that commute and be able to advise.

Alsohuman · 08/05/2020 13:37

I usually pick DH up most days at 5.30 so couldn't do that anymore

So that’s why he doesn’t want you to do it. I used to have a 100 mile round trip commute. It was fine in the summer, not quite as good in winter.

anothermansmother · 08/05/2020 13:38

I wouldn't do it for an extra 5k unless they're paying you a travel allowance. Plus is that 5k after tax? As otherwise it will work out as about an extra 500 a year after fuel costs and general wear on a car plus tax national insurance etc.
