To think the commute is not too much for this job?

The job is 27-30 miles away. 5k salary increase. I think it would be fine. DH says not a good idea (too far a commute time). We have 1 DC who would be in nursery whilst I'm working.

DH can't do drop off/pick up as he doesn't drive.

AIBU to think it's okay? Or is it too much of a commute? Not London, no.

Is there a medical reason for your hubby not driving OP?? If not then he needs to get on and learn and step up! Take the job if you think it has potential to take you further!!? Will there be possible promotions in time?? Could you move to Milton Keynes??

justdontatme · 08/05/2020 20:32

Is there a reason your DH can step up a bit?

LellyMcKelly · 08/05/2020 20:47

That’s the equivalent to Liverpool to Manchester or Portsmouth to Southampton. Completely doable and thousands do it every day. A more senior job offer not just a payrise but an opportunity to get a further pay rise in a few years. If you don’t take it, that may not happen. I’d take it and sit down with your DP and work out how you’re going to manage the logistics.

Sidalee7 · 08/05/2020 22:21

I’ve commuted to MK from a similar location to you OP, it’s not a nice journey. M1 is a total no go in rush hour and I used to go either through Woburn or Bletchley, lots of windy country roads.
It does depend where in MK you are travelling to, if it’s central or outskirts.
If central how about getting the train? I think you could drive to Leighton Buzzard and get one from there.

Sidalee7 · 08/05/2020 22:23

Just to add - I now commute to central London and prefer my now commute to driving to MK, those roundabouts are so monotonous!

Isn't there another question which is also how will you manage & how will dc manage if they are first in nursery & last one to be picked up every single day? That will be hard op

Ilove · 09/05/2020 00:11

What is your finish time/nursery finish time/where in the country/overlimit fees/days a week?

Rebelwithallthecause · 09/05/2020 00:19

Motorway at rush hour is a nightmare

Some days there will be accidents you’ll get held up in

Assume an average of 1 hour each way, that’s 10 hours commute a week?

Is 10 hoursx52 weeks = 520 hours (approx) worth a salary increase of £5k before tax? (So likely 20-40% less than £5k once it’s in your pocket?)

I was offered a £20k pay increase to commute between Hertfordshire and London.
I turned it down.

Maybe before kids but not when one is in childcare

Sally7645 · 09/05/2020 06:46

I did a 35 mile motorway commute every day for 6 years, however told myself it was worth it as earnt an extra £10k + due to proximity to London (Surrey) and could do a car share. Workplace was just outside the M25

It drained the life out of me, realistically it will be an hour each way unless you leave at the crack of dawn and start journey home by 4pm latest.

Then there's accidents etc to factor in. There were several times where I couldn't get home (snow, huge pile ups etc) which will be hugely stressful to manage with nursery pick ups, especially if you DH can't be on standby to take over

I weighed up in my head if someone said to me here's £10 grand but to earn it you have to sit in your car for 15 hours per week, for the next year, I'd probably turn it down!

Poetryinaction · 09/05/2020 07:18

Not motorway, no. I wouldn't put myself in danger like that every day unnecessarily.

ritzbiscuits · 09/05/2020 07:24

Id say no. After having my DS I changed a 30 mile commute to working locally. The morning drive was ok, but easily up to 90 mins on a night.

You really need to be picking up a child early evening 5/5.30 to then do mealtime, bath, bed.

5k is not going to cover increased petrol, car wear and tear either.

I now work only a 15/20 min drive from work and it's a dream. I'd really stay local if you can.

Yerroblemom1923 · 09/05/2020 07:33

I wouldn't. My work was less than 10 miles away but 45mins in stop start traffic. An hr and a half of my day spent in a car drove me nuts so I found a local job within walking distance. Time is precious. I know I'm lucky but it has taken a few years to create and build up my clients. I basically went Self Employed. Now, I feel for people commuting hours every day, I'd never go back to it.

Yerroblemom1923 · 09/05/2020 07:34

Not that I'm suggesting NOW is a time to go SE, op!

Chocolategirl79 · 09/05/2020 07:52

Don't do it unless you are really desperate for the extra money. I had a much shorter commute when the kids were little but still spent time getting really stressed and even crying in the car if traffic was bad and I knew I was going to end up being late to pick up. I had a group of other mums who helped when they were older but still really stressful knowing you can't get there in time. It also adds time onto being late into work if you want to get a school assembly or performance - so stressful all round!!

listsandbudgets · 09/05/2020 08:52

Is there no way he can do the nursery run by public transport? Lots of people do. Its ot always nice waiting at bus stops and walking between them bit sometimes it has to be done.
