To think that unlike Adele, lots of us are getting bigger after lockdown?

Having been reading about Adele's amazing weight loss, I feel as though I've performed a similar feat in reverse! I'm normally slim and healthy, I haven't been overeating that much during lockdown, so assume that it's just that I'm less active. I weighed myself this morning and have put on over half a stone! Speaking to friends, quite a few seem to have the same issue. AIBU to think that lots of people are gaining weight during lockdown? Or am I in denial and others are getting healthier, like Adele?

Also, the comments how tough it is for some people are irrelevant. It's tough for someone living in a city centre flat. It's also tough for a older person with limited mobility living somewhere isolated.

Will me restricting my isolated walk to an hour make any difference at all to those people? Will it improve their circumstances at all? Givr them more freedom? No.

The 'if I can't do it, no one should' attitude stinks. It's dog in the manger stuff.

@AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter thank you for posting about that app, your experience is encouraging. I've just downloaded it myself after reading this.

Racheyg · 07/05/2020 12:49

I think she looks amazing. If she has I fact lost 7st so quickly....I think it's been about 1 year-18 months then where has all the excess skin gone??

I lost 4st once....and my body looks like shit 😂

No, but you just sucking it up and doing what you were told could possibly have made the overall effectiveness of the restrictions better and flattened the curve more quickly. On the grounds that I explained above about modelling the right behaviour.

Xenia · 07/05/2020 12:50

We were not told in the regulations just to exercise for an hour a day.

I am 'sucking it up'. I am following the law.

MissHoskins · 07/05/2020 12:52

I think Adele does look fabulous, she does look different, still fabulous though.
There are some real nutters on this thread, spouting complete guff about THE RULES.
God only knows what they'll do if the lockdown is eased. Probably don their grim reaper suits and terrorise perceived RULE BREAKERS.

Times10 · 07/05/2020 12:52

I haven’t put on weight, but haven’t lost any either. I need to lose about a stone to get to a healthy bmi and another 1 or 2 to get to my ideal weight (small frame). The only reason I haven’t put on weight is because I’m breastfeeding. And although the scales haven’t changed, I feel pudgier. Every morning, I think to myself that I should control my snacking, but after a morning of trying to get the kids to do their work, biscuits are the only thing keeping me somewhat sane.

TinRoofRusty · 07/05/2020 12:58

Haven't gained or lost an ounce. Also rural. I couldn't even get to the only supermarkets (we have 2 small ones) and back on my feet in an hour (they are nearly 3 miles away). There's never been a 'one hour' rule. I walk for miles over trail. I do HIIT workouts at home. I don't overeat. Have stayed the same size for 12 years now. I'm menopausal.

burdog · 07/05/2020 13:01

I've lost almost a stone during lockdown even with doing less exercise. No socialising, no going out for lunch with colleagues, no being able to pop to the shops for tea because we can't be bothered to cook what's in the house has meant I've just eaten healthily.

fanniboz · 07/05/2020 13:05

I've lost weight. I'm just not snacking or overeating (which id sorted before all this happened anyway) and I'm now properly exercising every day. Halfway through my overall weight loss

lynsey91 · 07/05/2020 13:38

Of course it's up to Adele how much she weighs and if she is happy great. But I still think she has lost too much. Her face just looks so different and not, to me, in a good way.

I would not want to be as skinny as she is

Drivingdownthe101 · 07/05/2020 13:40

I think she looks fab. Much healthier.

Namesgonenow · 07/05/2020 13:49

I have a 3 months old baby and am
Doing the whole postnatal in a pandemic thing... 16 kilos lost since birth - by breastfeeding, and walking for an hour in THe woods every day. Eating has actually been interesting - not on a diet and having distinctly yummy food. Cooking lots from around the world, getting nice ingredients on the groceries order and making fancy dishes looking up various recipes. Not junk eating but lovely yummy eating if you see what I mean.

Goatinthegarden · 07/05/2020 13:54

There’s a surprising amount of slating of Adele for how she looks now. I’m assuming that she is much healthier and fitter at her new weight. Surely that is far more important than how you perceive her looks..?

Northernlass99 · 07/05/2020 14:08

Thanks for the info about the fasting apps. I initially lost weight due to worry and being very busy with work. Then started to self medicate with alcohol and snacks and have put on 6 lbs!! Got to take myself in hand now or I will be gigantic by the time I go back to work and none of my smart work clothes will fit.

There, managed to respond to the op without bickering about exercise time!

hippospot · 07/05/2020 14:12

@caperberries I'm in the same boat. Clearly I was more active than now, despite being careful with food and exercising every single day during lockdown. My walk or cycle commute obviously added up to a lot. I hope it'll just drop off once I get back to my usual lifestyle. Disheartening though!

PanicOnTheStreets85 · 07/05/2020 14:17

guidelines are an interpretation of the law which could be challenged in court

That's not actually right @ArgumentativeAardvaark. The guidance is non-statutory and would not be relevant when a court has to interpret what is legal and what is not. There would be no need to challenge the guidance - it is merely advisory.

The actual Regs are here
www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2020/350/pdfs/uksi_20200350_en.pdf

And I think it's bonkers that some posters in big cities (especially London) are trying to force those living out in the sticks to restrict their movements over and above what is legally required because London parks are too busy. It's so selfish and typical of those who think that the only important part of the country is the capital.

I live in an unfashionable area on the outskirts of a big city. I have spent the last couple of years regretting not buying a house more centrally as my commute is a PITA. But now it has come into its own as I can walk and run without being near anyone. I only went out once a day to begin with as a misguided effort of goodwill, but I'll be dammed if I have to do that for the long-term when it's not a legal requirement and totally unnecessary around here.

GreenFairy246 · 07/05/2020 14:40

I've lost 15lb so far, I'm a fatty and freaking out about Covid-19. It's given me a well needed kick up the butt!!

Needmoresleep · 07/05/2020 14:48

Panic, yes. But the problem surely is those who come on MN to brag about how swell things are for them, how big their gardens are etc.

It is unsavoury, especially given how hard it is for others.

Not you particularly, as your post is balanced. But people suggesting that people drive long distances for a walk, or that going to see piglets is a necessary journey.

The more people travel the higher risk there will be and the more transmission of the disease. Which is not in the interests of those in their rural idylls who presumably don’t want it within their communities.

A recent TV programme discovered that London was the region with the highest levels of emotional intelligence. It seemed a surprise. Not now.

Drivingdownthe101 · 07/05/2020 14:53

or that going to see piglets is a necessary journey

I never said it was a ‘necessary journey. I said that as part of our daily exercise, in which we risked no one, we went to see some piglets.
As I said, I used to live in central London. For years. So thank you for commending my emotional intelligence.

Drivingdownthe101 · 07/05/2020 14:54

And seriously, who the fuck is bragging? The question in the OP was ‘who has put weight on in lockdown?’. Answer... not me, as I’ve been walking loads. You’re the one who pounced on it like a dog with a bone.

Teateaandmoretea · 07/05/2020 14:56

Panic, yes. But the problem surely is those who come on MN to brag about how swell things are for them, how big their gardens are etc.

I can’t see anyone doing that, anywhere. Everywhere has advantages and disadvantages. A lot of people in more rural settings don’t have big gardens, I don’t for one. It isn’t swell for anyone it’s utterly shit.

MorganKitten · 07/05/2020 14:56

I’ve lost 7lbs so far. I’m trying to carry on my weightlifting while at home.
