This is a rant and I'm sorry. But a friend of mine and her dh are both on shielding list. Boyh diabetic both obese. They have a 3yr old..
Because the boy is bored they've gone to parks that have been locked and climbed over gate. Same in a touristy area.. Locked car parks they've parked along side and climbed the fence.
Shop daily for a browse.. In asda etc at everything they sell.. Which is fine if there but they make a point of saying oh I go to that tesco or asda ( when theres 2 closer) so they can browse at different toys etc.

I tried to gently say I was concerned as they should sheild and she said we'll who the fuck do the government think they are telling me what to do.. I'm fit and healthy (she's not and I'm amazed they climbed the fence tbh) and why should I keep ds in the garden or indoors!

Their garden is a child's dream. I mean 2 trampolines, a combo swing set, built in pool, hot tub. Play room.( summer house) slides x 3. See saw, paddling pall ball pit you name it.. Literally everything.
I juts find it frustrating many kids would love that and never want to leave the garden.. I belive this is down to her wanting to be deliberately flouting the rules.

It angers me. When she said she was meant to sheild I offered to do her shopping etc.

6 times in 1 day she went to b&q because she couldn't decide what patio slabs she wanted!

The sad thing is if anything happened to her or her dh. They have no other family to have their ds.

I'm impressed that she managed to get into B&Q six times in a day, the queue for our local one is about 90 minutes long at the busiest time!

RoosterPie · 06/05/2020 23:41

I dislike the curtain twitching and policing of others behaviour but 6 times to b and q in one day is a bit far. They’re taking the piss but I’ve voted YABU because I don’t think people should be refused treatment based on if their illness is deemed their fault or not.

PotholeParadise · 06/05/2020 23:42

Well, as the parks are locked and she's having to climb over fences, at least no-one else will have been touching the equipment before her son did? I'm sure you'll be relieved to hear that, yes?

nanbread · 06/05/2020 23:43

I can't tell if this is satire or not. It reads like lockdown law-flouting bingo but is a bit too subtle.

ACertainSupermarket · 06/05/2020 23:44

They are selfish idiots, that's for sure. but we don't refuse to treat smokers with lung cancer either. Though they've paid into the NHs with their tobacco tax...
It's How-Very-Dare-You-Comment-On-What Others-Do Night on MN tonight though so expect flaming.

TinRoofRusty · 06/05/2020 23:44

It doesn't work that way. Demented people lived too long and maybe accepted cancer treatment in the past that allowed them to live longer, they shouldn't be treated. Yeah, right. Get a grip. YABU.

So am I. I heard (on MN, natch) that they weren't even letting people into the store and you had to make orders at the door to a member of staff.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 06/05/2020 23:47

Didn't realise being obese put you on shielding list.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 06/05/2020 23:47

Presumably other health issues are involved as well as diabetes.

vodkaredbullgirl · 06/05/2020 23:48

Wonder what people will moan about, after the lockdown is over.

DamnYankee · 06/05/2020 23:50

AIBU to think people have lost their ever-loving minds? Poor girl.

A stormtrooper costume might be the best PPE us common folk can afford.

That roundabout behind the locked gates is going to be the safest fucking roundabout, ever.

underneaththeash · 06/05/2020 23:55

Diabetes would make you more likely to contract and be seriously affected by coronavirus as your immune system is compromised and obesity is a risk factor in both corona and diabetes.

I'd personally let them get on with it. Their 3 year old is unlikely to be affected and they're adults who can make their own decisions.

BritWifeinUSA · 06/05/2020 23:55

I’m not in the UK so I’m a bit out of touch but I don’t see obesity or diabetes on the shielded list on the .gov website.

So if that’s “all” that’s wrong with them (and I know obesity and diabetes are both serious) then maybe they are not actually supposed to be shielding anyway.

HyacynthBucket · 06/05/2020 23:59

They would get treated if had to go to hospital, but what if it was either them or some innocent elderly ill person who needed the only ventilator?
People like this who are in denial certainly are totally selfish, but maybe also thick - this woman does not seem to understand the reasons for the lockdown, as though protecting the NHS by staying at home makes no sense in her head. If it is a problem with authority though, she must know at some level that that is why she is doing it, and there is no excuse.

Davros · 07/05/2020 00:02

Diabetes is not on the shielded list

OneandTwenty · 07/05/2020 00:03

the lockdown is over on Monday, so no more shielding and rules to break. Problem solved!

Northernsoulgirl45 · 07/05/2020 00:03

Yeah I suspected diabetes wasn't so uploaded list

Thisismytimetoshine · 07/05/2020 00:05

Diabetics aren't on the shielding list as far as I know. And fat people definitely aren't.

Ponoka7 · 07/05/2020 00:12

Northernsoulgirl45,
Thisismytimetoshine

It's up to GPs who they consider should be shielding. I'm not in any of those categories, but I'm on the shielding list. I have a complex medical history.

It's now been advised that anyone with a BMI over 40 should try to shield.

OP, they've took the piss. We can't withhold treatment based on behaviour.

BritWifeinUSA · 07/05/2020 00:17

Anyone with a BMI over 40? That’s a huge chunk of the population.

midsomermurderess · 07/05/2020 00:19

Don't be so silly. What has happened to this site?

ACertainSupermarket · 07/05/2020 00:20

Why are people saying the lockdown is over on Monday? As far as I'm aware, and I can't see anything significant in the news, the principle is that there will be a review on May 7th. As we have not met the 5 criteria yet any change seems unlikely. and we would be very foolish to re-open before seeing the impact of it in the other European countries who started lockdown before us.

OneandTwenty · 07/05/2020 00:23

Why are people saying the lockdown is over on Monday?

because... it is.

Letters have started to be sent to schools warning them they are reopening in June, the "stay at home" is over. Just read any newspaper for full details.

It wasn't exactly a lockdown with people officially allowed to drive, businesses allowed to function. Not many have actually closed - even ice-cream vans have been driving around!
