Yes. No instruments or fireworks nonsense here.

We live directly opposite a care home and some of the carers were in tears as they said they never get recognition and it was really special.

So yes, I’ll continue to do it.

Pantsupyourbum · 06/05/2020 20:13

It’s a really nice gesture but us at the hospital would just prefer you stook to the lock down without finding “way around” getting out and meeting people. A grocery shop isn’t a trip out everyday, it should be for your weekly shop, so while it’s nice we don’t need it to feel appreciated. And no we don’t need any more scrub bags, there are literally hundreds and hundreds stacking up that won’t get used, but thank you.

It's an interesting escalation in the expectations of social conformity. About 25 years ago the armistice silence moved from the nearest Sunday to 11th November, meaning everyone was expected to participate. This also marked the start the ever-increasing trend of poppy shaming. Then one-minute silences started to be required for all manner of things, and participation expected. Some things soon required two-minute silences. The move to clapping is a further step up the scale, which has rapidly itself increased to banging saucepans. Where next?

(By the way, it's all fucking bollocks in my view, so no! Grin)

NHS workers love the fact that the country shows their support and thanks in this way - please don't stop

My dad works for the NHS this was his opinion

Are you still clapping for the NHS/key workers every week?
Ilovecats14 · 06/05/2020 20:17

No. Never have. None of my neighbours do it now.

Hunnybears · 06/05/2020 20:18

Yeah it probably is a bit cringey for the actual staff, but I can’t think of a better way to show your appreciation to those in the firing line.

I think it shows an awareness and a respect to those we know are potentially putting themselves at risk and it’s our way of thanking them.

There’s only a few on my street that do abd I think it’s sad really. It takes 1 minute out if your evening yet that’s apparently too hard for some. 🙄

Peggysgettingcrazy · 06/05/2020 20:21

Yes thats why people on't do it....because its too hard! Some people really are hard of thinking.

I ca show my appreciation by making sure the staff are getting meals.

Tappering · 06/05/2020 20:21

It's not too hard for me - I don't want to do it. Not clapping doesn't mean I don't appreciate what HCPs are doing. If you want to clap then fine. But some people don't want to, for a variety of reasons, and I'm not sure why that bothers you so much.

Hunnybears · 06/05/2020 20:31

some people aren’t mobile so would be too hard, others just don’t want to show their appreciation.....

megletthesecond · 06/05/2020 20:34

No. We live in a grotty estate and no one does it.
My neighbours hate me enough as it is without me adding more noise to the street.

I'd rather the NHS was properly funded.

BirdieFriendReturns · 06/05/2020 20:36

Isn’t it brilliant, we live in a free country where we are all able to clap or not clap!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/05/2020 20:42

Only 1 minute? It's longer than that here, nearer 5 minutes!

Peggysgettingcrazy · 06/05/2020 20:45

others just don’t want to show their appreciation in this way!

You missed a bit.

SilverOtter · 06/05/2020 20:49

Nope. It wakes my toddler up every single week so I'm usually trying to settle him. I work on the 'frontline' so I feel I'm supporting the NHS anyway🤷🏻‍♀️

Hunnybears · 06/05/2020 20:52

@Peggysgettingcrazy

It’s for each person to fill in as they wish...

HollySideEyes · 06/05/2020 20:53

No, I'm supporting them in my own way. Don't need to be 'seen' to be doing so.

eclipse77 · 06/05/2020 20:54

No and it's got quieter here on Thursday nights

funinthesun19 · 06/05/2020 20:55

I always forget.

Peggysgettingcrazy · 06/05/2020 20:58

Its really not unless you are one of those people that think clapping like a seal makes you better than everyone else.

And this is the issue. People trying to make out they care more, are morally superior etc just because they clap.

Tbh, if you need to clap on the doorstep to make you feel like a good person, thats totally your own issue. Don't put it on others.

Nixen · 06/05/2020 20:59

Nope. Don’t have a problem if others want to though- whatever works for them! Not a fan of the fireworks, banging pots etc. Have a toddler who is usually just falling asleep at 8!

Doobydoo · 06/05/2020 21:01

No.and.I have never voted Conservative, stick to the Lockdown stuff and I am a nurse.

ChocolateQuiltedShitPig · 06/05/2020 21:02

Another thread on clapping. Thank god for that

x2boys · 06/05/2020 21:03

Ah the weekly I don't want to clap for the NHS thread .

Kenworthington · 06/05/2020 21:11

No. Haven’t done it before and not going to do it now. It’s the epitome of virtue signalling imo

If you’re happy not to do then own it.

Why do you feel the need to justify it by trying to make out those that do clap feel superior?

You don’t want to clap to show your support for the NHS then that’s up to you. Do I find it a big shit when no one in the street bothers? Yes. Does it look like they don’t card? Yes imo.
