Customers in supermarket queues buying 2 items

justasking111 · 06/05/2020 14:13

After a week of emptying cupboards reluctantly went out this morning. Standing in Tesco queue, two over 70s ladies behind me. one had given the other a lift. What do you need the driver said, oh just some cheese and a newspaper. They were not switched on by social distancing either despite the clear marks on the pavement.

Now I do think if you are over 70 and determined to get out well on your head be it. But for two items, for christs sake.

AIBU I being unreasonable to think that if you go to a supermarket it is to seriously stock up not for 2 items?

@familyof4boys - over 70s were not told to shield.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/05/2020 19:15

@1forAll74 I get the cat food delivered which is also wrong on MN as I'm forcing people to work apparently. I also buy 10 boxes at a time so I'm stockpiling as well. You can't win sometimes.

DianaT1969 · 06/05/2020 19:23

You will be over 70 too one day OP.

Queeftastic · 06/05/2020 19:32

Seriously none of your business.

CatandtheFiddle · 06/05/2020 19:33

Well, she has to hope so - the alternative is worse!

BirdieFriendReturns · 06/05/2020 19:35

How will OP get to 70 as the dementors keep telling us WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 06/05/2020 19:39

200 items would lead to a stockpiling accusation by many

Depends how it’s defined - could make purchasing couscous tricky, else Grin

Mary1935 · 06/05/2020 19:40

Just asking - ignore the morons - I’m with you.
Shall we all pop out for a cabbage newspaper or some random item that really can’t wait till your next shop.
Yes they weren’t social distancing either unless they live together.
I have my tin hat ready!!
But don’t waste your time as I won’t come back.🥶 Bo ho!!

BarbeDeMaman · 06/05/2020 19:42

I have no problem with this. They may have needed to get out, they may have needed those two items. Ours not to reason why. Mind your own business and assume everyone else is minding theirs.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/05/2020 19:43

How can a newspaper wait until the next shop? You'll miss that days news 🤔

ilovesooty · 06/05/2020 19:48

@Mary1935 charming language. Do you usually employ disablist language to express disagreement?

Iwantacookie · 06/05/2020 19:52

I agree op I'm trying to hold off going to the shops for as long as possible.
Ds2 nan posted some money through the door earlier so he could pop to the shops to get some sweets completely bewildered as to why he wasnt going to the shop anytime soon Confused

Hopethiswilldo · 06/05/2020 19:54

@PinkSparklyPussyCat
Love that 🤣🤣

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 06/05/2020 19:57

What's a cabbage newspaper?

Exactly Grin

"Morons"? I can't speak for Mary (who appears to be a moron Grin) but I do use this a lot.

carlywurly · 06/05/2020 20:05

It's not ageist to acknowledge that the elder members of our population are at greater risk from this virus.

It's also been made repeatedly clear that we should shop as infrequently as possible. I'm notoriously shit at meal planning but have got my act together so I don't need to go every day.

I've avoided taking any online slot as there are plenty of vulnerable people who need them more then me.

All that considered, I take the ops point. It's really uncomfortable to have people standing six inches from you unnecessarily in supermarket queues when it's been drummed in so hard about social distancing.

babybunny123 · 06/05/2020 20:14

I can only shop for a few things at a time as i will not use public transport and cannot carry heavy bags, it is a 30 min walk to the nearest supermarket. I nearly pulled my arms out of the sockets the last time i did a 'big shop'.

BillThePony · 06/05/2020 20:16

I brought a packet of tampons and some paracetamol earlier. I didn't need anything else but what else was I supposed to do?

Alsohuman · 06/05/2020 20:21

It disproportionately affects the BAME population too. Try substituting racist for ageist and black and brown for elderly in that sentence and see how it looks.

AndMyHairWillShineLikeTheSea · 06/05/2020 20:33

@BillThePony bleed on your clothes and be in pain. Our ancestors did it, don't be a wimp! You're killing people going to the shop for 2 things

Wink
BirdieFriendReturns · 06/05/2020 20:38

You can make a tampon out of leaves in your garden!

ACertainSupermarket · 06/05/2020 20:41

Gawd don't get the hate on here OP!!

  1. They were not from the same household so shouldn't have been in one car.
  2. Over 70s WERE told to shield but Hancock cocked up the guidance and claims he never said it now.
  3. If you're older, you're more likely to get it and get it worse. Facts.
  4. Make as few trips out as possible. So flitting out for 'bits' is unreasonable.
  5. Apart from sharing a car in the first place, they were'nt observing social distancing in the shop.
So YANBU.
lovemelongtime · 06/05/2020 20:46

gobsmacked at these responses - what is it that people dont understand about "essential trips only" cut down on contact, go to the shop when necessary etc etc etc - you go as little as possible and definitely not for 2 items ! especially if you are over 70 for gods sake - hardly surprising we have the highest rates in Europe

TeensArghhhh · 06/05/2020 20:51

Maybe they live together?

I sent DH out to get some gravy browning yesterday. The dinner was ready and I dropped (and smashed) the bottle of gravy browning. I didn’t need anything else as my Tesco delivery was due this morning.

Nobody batted an eyelid that he bought just one item. No queue outside the store either - bonus!

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 06/05/2020 20:52

You're seeing a minute snapshot of someone's lives though.
You see two items and immediately go into judgy mode, how would you know whether the two items they are going for are things they need but were unable to get in another shop so are trying there instead?
Not everyone can do big shops.
People don't always drive and there's only so much you can carry all at once/afford in one go.
