Customers in supermarket queues buying 2 items

justasking111 · 06/05/2020 14:13

After a week of emptying cupboards reluctantly went out this morning. Standing in Tesco queue, two over 70s ladies behind me. one had given the other a lift. What do you need the driver said, oh just some cheese and a newspaper. They were not switched on by social distancing either despite the clear marks on the pavement.

Now I do think if you are over 70 and determined to get out well on your head be it. But for two items, for christs sake.

AIBU I being unreasonable to think that if you go to a supermarket it is to seriously stock up not for 2 items?

My dh shops for my elderly aunt and uncle and sometimes one shop doesn't have everything. He also has to get them whiskey and cigarettes so probably gets judged for that too Grin

saraclara · 06/05/2020 21:02

Over 70s WERE told to shield

No. They. Weren't.

Jesus, this is getting ridiculous. What is the matter with people?

The media was predicting back in March that they would be told to, but it never happened.

tinytemper66 · 06/05/2020 21:04

When I shopped today with my disabled son I was shopping for 4 households...mine, his, my mum and my aunt. Now I could decide to do 4 different shops but I combined them to limit the amount of times I go to the shop.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/05/2020 21:05

@saraclara don't forget there are the government rules and the MN interpretation and there's very little similarity.

SpicedCamomile · 06/05/2020 21:05

you go as little as possible and definitely not for two items
This is the third time I have posted this link on this thread, but again, not according to the Police who say it is reasonable to go out “Buying a small amount of a staple item or necessity (eg, a newspaper, pet food, a loaf of bread or pint of milk).”. So you can go out for one item. A loaf of bread. A newspaper.

No they weren't.
If that's the case, how come MIL well into her 70s and a keyworker still goes to work most days?

Hamm87 · 06/05/2020 21:23

Omg government research read the news one person who has covid may not know they have it goes to the supermarket for 1 item pass ppl touchs other things pays for items touching more things walking next 2 ppl so that one person who is a selfish twat has now risked everyone else that is there it only takes 1 more to catch it then spread it more honestly ppl just dont understand basic viruses

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/05/2020 21:27

What difference would it make if they went for 20 items? Do they
only infect people if they shop for an approved amount of items?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/05/2020 21:27

*don't shop for an approved amount of items

saints06 · 06/05/2020 21:27

For every person such as the OP describes (buying when on part of their once a day exercise no doubt) there are far more using their Chelsea Tractor on non-urgent journeys.

LilacTree1 · 06/05/2020 21:28

Susie “ The reason the age was mentioned is that they are MOST of danger of death from the virus . It’s a valid point to try and Minimise risk”

And these shoppers clearly prefer to shop, so let them be.

TheCanterburyWhales · 06/05/2020 21:28

And what precisely does that little rant have to do with anything?

TheCanterburyWhales · 06/05/2020 21:29

@Hamm87

“ honestly ppl just dont understand basic viruses”

Or, they’ve understood them for years and would rather learn to live or die with them than adopt the unprecedented level of crazy we’ve seen in this pandemic?

Xenia · 06/05/2020 21:35

We just have to live and let live. I won't be going into shops saying you are fat, you are black, you are old - go home just because those people are more ilkely to get covid 19 badly. Instead we should just let people get on with their lives - they are not breaking the law.

Sillysop92 · 06/05/2020 21:58

I went into 4 shops yesterday! Mainly to look for hand gel for my daughter to take to work! Her well known supermarket has run out even for staff! Plus some Percy pigs from M&S.

cologne4711 · 06/05/2020 21:58

you go as little as possible and definitely not for 2 items

What happens if those are the only two items you need?

Anyway you are allowed out for daily exercise, so it's fine to shop for a couple of things while you are out.

And you may get most things in one shop and go to another for the others.

And over 70s DO NOT HAVE TO STAY INDOORS.

cologne4711 · 06/05/2020 22:00

no doubt but the Chelsea Tractor is the bigger issue than the fact they are daring to go shopping more than once a week during lockdown.

Hamm87 · 06/05/2020 22:54

Honestly the people who are doing dont gove a shot if they get it and die or live but could kill 10 people by spreading it around so yeah continue on your merry way with your head up your arse because you dont care about saving loved ones or maybe you might have already given them a death sentence enjoy your sad lives and I will continue to keep my family a safe as I can from ppl like that

1forsorrow · 06/05/2020 22:58

I brought a packet of tampons and some paracetamol earlier. I didn't need anything else but what else was I supposed to do? Get pregnant? A small price to pay to avoid shopping for tampons every month, although I suppose if you tell your husband/partner that you have a headache as you can't get paracetamol that might get difficult. It is a dilemma.

Allnamesaregone · 06/05/2020 23:02

I bought 2 items the other day. Pens and lined paper. Essential items as I’m working from home now.

1forsorrow · 06/05/2020 23:03

Who knows, I didn't ask the woman who worked in the supermarket if she used MN. She was not happy about having her risk of contracting Covid increased just so somebody could have a chocolate bar or buy a newspaper. So what would be worth having her risk of contracting covid increased? A pork chop, a bag of spuds, a loaf, a bottle of wine? Does it vary by checkout person so if I go to till 1 it is OK to buy washing powder but not deodorant, if I go to checkout 2 I can buy a loaf but not bread rolls?

I wish someone would actually publish the rules.

1forsorrow · 06/05/2020 23:06

I bought 2 items the other day. Pens and lined paper. Essential items as I’m working from home now. Did you need the lines, would plain paper have been adequate? Why a pen, you could sharpen a stick and use blood for ink. We just need to apply some lateral thinking here.

Personally I think chocolate is vital, my husband thinks it is tobacco, I just can't make him see sense.

Ilovecats14 · 06/05/2020 23:19

I'm planning on going in the shop next to my office tomorrow to get my son a drink and some sweets on my way home from work. Guaranteed I will get chocolate for myself too. Not very essential I know 🙈

"A government advice page on social distancing, last updated on Friday, says people aged 70 or older are classed as clinically vulnerable, regardless of any medical conditions. It says these people are at higher risk of severe illness and “should take particular care to minimise contact with others outside your household.” The NHS also lists people aged 70 or over as being clinically vulnerable, recommending they only leave home if it is essential."
