Customers in supermarket queues buying 2 items

justasking111 · 06/05/2020 14:13

After a week of emptying cupboards reluctantly went out this morning. Standing in Tesco queue, two over 70s ladies behind me. one had given the other a lift. What do you need the driver said, oh just some cheese and a newspaper. They were not switched on by social distancing either despite the clear marks on the pavement.

Now I do think if you are over 70 and determined to get out well on your head be it. But for two items, for christs sake.

AIBU I being unreasonable to think that if you go to a supermarket it is to seriously stock up not for 2 items?

Exactly @BuddleiaTime.

BritWifeinUSA · 06/05/2020 14:32

So the one who drove may have been buying a week’s shopping for her household and the other one joined along. It’s hardly going to cause everyone to drop dead. Do you know them? Maybe they live in the same house. Could be a couple. Focus on your own situation and maintain your own distancing and you won’t even notice what other people are buying or who gave whom a lift.

I’d hate to think someone behind me in the Safeway queue had started a whole thread on a public forum about my purchases.

HappyHammy · 06/05/2020 14:32

Im.just about to go out to try and get a fresh chicken. Everything else came on the delivery.

bloodywhitecat · 06/05/2020 14:32

I went to Tesco last week for two tins of baby milk I couldn't get in Morrisons, is that a crime too?

Crunchymum · 06/05/2020 14:33

I suspect this is a thread wanting to cause outrage.

Over 70 - froth
2 items - froth
both of them from different households - froth
both going into the shop instead of one waiting outside - froth

I suggest the OP stops earwigging!

Over 70's are meant to shield but maybe "Ethel" and "Mildred" are only in their 40's and have just had a hard life!

justasking111 · 06/05/2020 14:33

As for the lack of social distancing, is that ok if you are elderly? They were right up my backside throught the waiting to get in process. Tesco clearly mark out spacing. They totally ignored that.

Pinkflipflop85 · 06/05/2020 14:34

I walked over to the shop to buy some wine. Who are you going to report me to.....

Hobbesmanc · 06/05/2020 14:34

Bloody hell stop with these judgey speculation posts. You have no idea of others circumstances. And all these competitive virtue signalling holier than thou people need to just back off!

Our local Co Op doesn't always have everything in stock. So I might amble over to the other store to buy a single item. We need to get a grip! .

CoronaMoaner · 06/05/2020 14:35

I saw someone leaving the supermarket the other day with the grand total of 2 bags of monster munch.
I feel the same as you OP. We offered our online shop to our in-laws as both over 70 and FiL has recently recovered from cancer. They refused as its ‘their legitimate excuse to leave the house’. Well no, actually, you shouldn’t be heading out shopping if you can get it delivered. But you know better.
I’m leaving them to it.

ilovesooty · 06/05/2020 14:36

So did you ask them to give you more space?

BirdieFriendReturns · 06/05/2020 14:36

Am I allowed to buy a packet of tampons and pads or should I use a leaf instead oh wise Mumsnetters, givers of permissions?

I’ll make sure I print off the post that gives me permission to take to Sainsburys.

Legoandloldolls · 06/05/2020 14:36

I understand op. They are over 70 and have been told to isolate and not go out hence age is key here.

My mum.is 76 and shopping daily is seems. Yet we are told that if we go out to buy bread as we have zero food in we are killing our grains?

Yes double standards. You are in the wrong to protect the over 70s as its ageist. Your wrong to be concerned about them as well.

Everything you do and say is wrong.

I have come to the conclusion that as long as I stick to the rules I dont really to give too much thought to anything else.

Your dammed what ever you choose.

justasking111 · 06/05/2020 14:37

If I had turned round and coughed would they have blanched in fear I wonder.

OP posts:
ilovesooty · 06/05/2020 14:39

So you didn't ask them to move away? I don't think you're "concerned " about them either as a previous poster claims.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 06/05/2020 14:39

They are over 70 and have been told to isolate and not go out hence age is key here NO they were advised to isolate. It’s now law, it’s not rule that they do. Over 70s are adults and can think for themselves, if they want to go shopping they are allowed.

Deux · 06/05/2020 14:39

You’re several weeks too late for that kind of frothing and outrage OP. Keep up.

PapercraftNinja · 06/05/2020 14:40

Hmm I personally would stock up but we have also been online shopping. However the “rules” say you can go out for a luxury item or whatever inc. newspaper.

I’ve been frowned upon from neighbours because of the fortnightly online shop being delivered. DH is classed as vulnerable but they don’t know that I guess. They reckon we are taking slots from those who need it more.

What has their age got to do with anything?*

Everything because this is MN where racism, sexism and homophobia are not allowed but ageism is compulsory in every thread. Old people are all evil and selfish apparently.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 06/05/2020 14:40

The absolute worst part of this whole lockdown is the way we now feel equipped to judge the ever loving shit out of everyone else's basket/trolley each tim we leave the house. Buying too much loo roll - judge. Buying alcohol - judge. Buying bbq briquettes - judge. Buying only two items - judge. buying dog treats - judge. Buying hairspray - judge.

Your essential isn't everyone else's essential and sometimes it's best to leave people alone instead of starting goady nonsense threads like this. It's ridiculous. People can buy what they like; the shops are there, let them choose and just keep your distance.

AmelieTaylor · 06/05/2020 14:41

YANBU

'As infrequently as possible'

But god forbid should someone someone do without bread, cheese or whatever.

Why do people have to be dicks. We 'can' buy whatever we want, but 'going out for essentials as I frequently as possible' is the guidelines -not 'pop to the bloody shop every 5 minutes for the odd item'
People will trash the gains that have been made by the lockdown then we will end up
In another lockdown which will have stricter rules and we will end up with the nightingales getting filled up - maybe then they'll be happy as it 'will have been worth building'. I despair.

BeforeIPutOnMyMakeup · 06/05/2020 14:42

Over 70s were advised to isolate not shield

However it is advice not law.

They like you or anyone considered vulnerable can refuse to do this.

However if you don't socially distance you can be arrested.

ifonly4 · 06/05/2020 14:44

DD works in a supermarket and she says loads of people come in for one/two items. Personally, I'd have thought everyone would want to limit shops and contact. A couple of times DH has said he'd go out and get a few things we'd run out of rather than wait but we've added a few more things to the list so we can avoid the shops for an extra day or two next time.

I have to say, I don't think some of the elderly get it. My nextdoor neighbour says he doesn't see any harm in going to the shops early every morning, he doesn't have to go as I originally volunteered to shop for him, and the lady opposite since.

HoneyBee03 · 06/05/2020 14:44

Maybe they really needed cheese? I don't see the issue here. Also lots of people don't bother to social distance in supermarkets so in future you'll either need to ask them to step back or move yourself.

I saw Goody Proctor loitering in the non-essential aisle at Tesco.
