Customers in supermarket queues buying 2 items

justasking111 · 06/05/2020 14:13

After a week of emptying cupboards reluctantly went out this morning. Standing in Tesco queue, two over 70s ladies behind me. one had given the other a lift. What do you need the driver said, oh just some cheese and a newspaper. They were not switched on by social distancing either despite the clear marks on the pavement.

Now I do think if you are over 70 and determined to get out well on your head be it. But for two items, for christs sake.

AIBU I being unreasonable to think that if you go to a supermarket it is to seriously stock up not for 2 items?

How are people going to cope when life slowly goes back to normal?

Badly with any luck and competitively badly, so we can read the batshit posts about it on here.

catinasplat · 06/05/2020 18:04

Oh and cardibach the government has said that we can buy whatever a shop tha is open sells, they haven't said what is pointless and what isn't.

DuploTower · 06/05/2020 18:04

Haven't read the whole thread, but everyone banging about ageism is a bit odd. Why are pretending they don't know the increased risk for the elderly.

And enough of the lockdown police comments. Did the OP intervene or even address these people? Judging silently and discussing later with friends is what we all do.

Drivingdownthe101 · 06/05/2020 18:04

There was no queue when I bought my ice lollies today, so does that make it ok? I also bought milk for the baby, does that make it ok?

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 06/05/2020 18:10

Eg By reading posts on Mumsnet with increasing incredulity, discussing, judging, and making fun of lockdown police Grin

I predict in a year’s time in AIBU:

“I haven’t been outside for a year, AIBU?”

“Why is Sainsbury’s a free for all, we should be standing outside in the rain, bring back the two metre rule, essential items only!”

“I refuse to go to work and they are going to dismiss me, should I sue them?”

Skyr2 · 06/05/2020 18:13

I live in a small touristy town, we have Small food shops, news agents, butchers, bakers, pharmacy etc.. all open for business.
I do go to a larger supermarket for weekly shop but buy extra things locally to try and support the smaller local shops.
We all know we need to social distance and can still do that and buy 2 items at a time !

butterdaisy · 06/05/2020 18:14

The person who served me in the supermarket said that they are getting people in just to buy a newspaper or a chocolate bar. It's ridiculous, people shouldn't be doing that

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 06/05/2020 18:16

If they buy milk or a loaf of bread that they need at the same time, is it then OK in MN Land to be allowed to buy a bar of chocolate too?
Or is chocolate too frivolous a purchase?

Headbangersandmash · 06/05/2020 18:17

As for people buying stuff, I couldn't give a hoot whether they've bought 2, 20 or 200 items. Mind your own beeswax.

200 items would lead to a stockpiling accusation by many

BirdieFriendReturns · 06/05/2020 18:19

There are no laws about what you buy in a supermarket or how often you go. Mumsnetters making up their own rules and thinking everyone will do what they say.

Headbangersandmash · 06/05/2020 18:19

Last week I did my shopping then realised that I'd forgotten Doritos for DS so went in again (no queue to get in). Does that make me someone worth judging? Grin

SusieOwl4 · 06/05/2020 18:30

The virus is ageist not us and it’s threads like this that drive me bonkers .

The reason the age was mentioned is that they are MOST of danger of death from the virus . It’s a valid point to try and Minimise risk .

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/05/2020 18:31

I popped to the corner shop today for milk but I followed the rules and didn't just buy one thing, I bought lager and ice cream as well.

cansu · 06/05/2020 18:32

Get a grip. I often pop out to get a few bits. I observe the social distancing rules, use anti bac etc. Focus on your own life and stop being such a bloody busybody

guanciale · 06/05/2020 18:36

well if you're not gonna deliver for them whats wrong with coming out

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 06/05/2020 18:36

Could I suggest that the supermarket stasi consult each other, and compile detailed rules and lists clearly dictating what it is and isn't acceptable to buy, in what quantities and how often? This could include variations for different age groups, and, as well as minimum quantities, stipulate maximum quantities above which charges of stockpiling will be brought.

This might stop them from posting fucking ridiculous nonsense on here for at least a few days Grin

Aragog · 06/05/2020 18:40

as over 70s have been advised to shield

Not all over 70s have been told to shield.

1forsorrow · 06/05/2020 18:52

@Sheepareawesome hope the surgery goes well.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 06/05/2020 18:55

YANBU.

Any of us could manage without cheese and a newspaper.

Now had she said "A Twix and a copy of Hello Magazine", she would be justified in going out. Grin

I think some people are just going crackers indoors. But I don't think it's appropriate - they may be willing to risk infection, but they have no right to risk passing it on to others.

1forsorrow · 06/05/2020 18:56

The person who served me in the supermarket said that they are getting people in just to buy a newspaper or a chocolate bar You'd almost think they were being employed to serve customers, I never realised they were there to judge what we should be allowed to buy. Maybe they should just do their job?

DysonFury · 06/05/2020 19:00

Who actually gives a fuck how many items anyone else buys? Really?

butterdaisy · 06/05/2020 19:01

Who knows, I didn't ask the woman who worked in the supermarket if she used MN. She was not happy about having her risk of contracting Covid increased just so somebody could have a chocolate bar or buy a newspaper.

1forAll74 · 06/05/2020 19:05

I would only go for a box of cat food, this mean that there are 12 sachets in the box, so is that ok? I would like to get 10 boxes really, but they are quite heavy when you have to walk home. I am 70 plus, but not sure what age has to do with anything.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 06/05/2020 19:07

Well, that didn't even attempt to answer my question, did you mis-read on purpose? Confused Grin
I said, if I need some milk, or a loaf of bread, am I allowed a bar of chocolate as well or is that too frivolous a purpose and to step away from the chocolate aisle?
The shop is only a 5 minute walk away,
