Customers in supermarket queues buying 2 items

justasking111 · 06/05/2020 14:13

After a week of emptying cupboards reluctantly went out this morning. Standing in Tesco queue, two over 70s ladies behind me. one had given the other a lift. What do you need the driver said, oh just some cheese and a newspaper. They were not switched on by social distancing either despite the clear marks on the pavement.

Now I do think if you are over 70 and determined to get out well on your head be it. But for two items, for christs sake.

AIBU I being unreasonable to think that if you go to a supermarket it is to seriously stock up not for 2 items?

Mgby1 I hope you get better soon. Despite my facetious comments, I think that more should be done to protect supermarket workers.

ilovesooty · 06/05/2020 17:39

Well Robert Jenrick has just asked people to buy a newspaper...

cardibach · 06/05/2020 17:40

catinasplat our government haven’t stopped us going out for pointless snit because they are crap. Governments in countries which have had fewer deaths have policed shopping trips and ensured people went (as Boris requested but never bothered enforcing) as infrequently as possible. The whole point of lockdown is to reduce contacts. Shopping daily or for odd items increases contacts. If that doesn’t increase risk why do we have lockdown at all?

Drivingdownthe101 · 06/05/2020 17:41

I’m sorry you’re ill Mgby1 and hope you recover soon. But you have no idea if you contracted it from someone doing their bi weekly shop, an NHS worker, an asymptomatic co-worker or someone who just came in for a bottle of cider.

Deux · 06/05/2020 17:45

It’s supposed to be social distancing that’s key. One of the government’s own documents suggests you need 15 minutes of close contact with an infectious person at a distance of less than 2 metres to catch it.

GrumpiestOldWoman · 06/05/2020 17:46

No, but one of those people did come in with coronavirus. If it was the person buying just a bottle if cider - surely that wasn't worth putting someone in hospital?

BirdieFriendReturns · 06/05/2020 17:46

DH has gone out for a newspaper on his daily walk.

“Robert Jenrick explains that today he will be taking questions from regional media.

"The local press are under significant financial pressure," he says and urges "everyone who can" to buy a newspaper.“

I hope some Mumsnetters are “literally sobbing and shaking” at that . 😂

Sheepareawesome · 06/05/2020 17:48

I bought a pair of kid's sandals in a supermarket yesterday. Perhaps I should have worn a sign explaining that my child is having emergency toe surgery and needs open toed footwear just in case someone judged me? Or perhaps I should just assume people will mind their own business and not give a damn?! No one knows anyone else's business and nor should they. We all just do what we hope is for the best.

GrumpiestOldWoman · 06/05/2020 17:48

I doubt he meant go to a supermarket specially and only buy the paper.

Makeuptherules · 06/05/2020 17:49

I try not to worry about what others are doing, this stuff is stressful enough, why make it more so. Just do what you gotta do and mind your own business

cozycat1 · 06/05/2020 17:50

Jeez, as if its not enough people calling people out for now following "the rules" , you can't even go out and buy something at the shop without said items being scrutinised. Just as well there are no proper "rules" about what you can buy inside a shop that is actually open for people to shop in.

Gingerkittykat · 06/05/2020 17:50

We see delivery vans in our street and never give it a second thought!

You're doing it wrong. You should be logging how often each household gets shopping, decide if they are sufficiently vulnerable to have a slot. Bonus points if you get the binoculars out to spy the fact they have a bar of chocolate, mutipack of crisps or bottle of beer hidden in there.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 06/05/2020 17:51

I saw Goody Proctor loitering in the non-essential aisle at Tesco.

@HoyaFlower that is one of the funniest things I've read in a long time, thank you for the laugh Grin

As for people buying stuff, I couldn't give a hoot whether they've bought 2, 20 or 200 items. Mind your own beeswax.

MotheringShites · 06/05/2020 17:53

The infantilising of the over 70s is really starting to piss me off.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 06/05/2020 17:53

Yeah OP what is it with those pesky independent old ladies thinking they know what's best for them? They'll be telling us they survived the war next!!

I'd tell you to run along but it seems you already have. Grin

Alsohuman · 06/05/2020 17:54

I doubt he meant go to a supermarket specially and only buy the paper

We don’t know, do we? How interesting that you’d instantly make that assumption.

ilovesooty · 06/05/2020 17:54

I'd like to know how @Xenia knows her taxes have been designated specifically to pay the wages of nurses.

Oblomov20 · 06/05/2020 17:55

NO one I know, locally, has been able to get a single on-line delivery. Not once. Since this started. 8 weeks ago?

Not a single fucking one.

BruceAndNosh · 06/05/2020 17:56

I'm only shopping once a week. Not because I'm enjoying competitive lockdown, just because shopping at the moment is tedious and low level stressful.

KingJarvis · 06/05/2020 17:57

oblomov20

I’ve managed to get one every week. No problems at all

BirdieFriendReturns · 06/05/2020 17:59

Well I won’t be dictated to by a random person on Mumsnet.

It’s not like anybody is going to read the “fummimg” (sic) of a previous poster ranting in text speak about how only going to the shops to buy one or two things is “murdering” people.

Nobody is going to read that and think “oooo I must stay inside.”

How are people going to cope when life slowly goes back to normal?

PhilCornwall1 · 06/05/2020 18:01

NO one I know, locally, has been able to get a single on-line delivery. Not once. Since

Have only had one week where we couldn't get one, got them sorted for weeks now.

catinasplat · 06/05/2020 18:01

cardibach that's true, but until we have more stats and research we won't know what poses the most risk. I'd take a punt on not social distancing being more of a risk that going to the shop for a lone loaf of bread. Yes, other countries had much more severe lockdowns and maybe we should have too, but that's another issue.

GrumpiestOldWoman · 06/05/2020 18:01

We don’t know, do we? How interesting that you’d instantly make that assumption.

Yes interesting given that people are already having to queue to get into a supermarket to buy food, and it's unreasonable to significantly increase the length of the wait to do the food shop because everyone makes a special trip to buy a paper?

BirdieFriendReturns · 06/05/2020 18:03

I’m a bit sad that nobody told me I would be murdering people going to buy a pack of tampons and that I should make some out of leaves or something.

Like the posters who told people milk isn’t essential and they should add cheese to their coffee or freeze milk in an ice cube tray and then add to tea.
