Customers in supermarket queues buying 2 items

justasking111 · 06/05/2020 14:13

After a week of emptying cupboards reluctantly went out this morning. Standing in Tesco queue, two over 70s ladies behind me. one had given the other a lift. What do you need the driver said, oh just some cheese and a newspaper. They were not switched on by social distancing either despite the clear marks on the pavement.

Now I do think if you are over 70 and determined to get out well on your head be it. But for two items, for christs sake.

AIBU I being unreasonable to think that if you go to a supermarket it is to seriously stock up not for 2 items?

I often go into a supermarket just for a couple of items I couldn't get in the first supermarket I've just been to.

But the second supermarket is generally Waitrose, where people are generally too liberal-minded to get all judgey about it. Wink

tinytemper66 · 06/05/2020 17:14

I asked the store before hand and they said he could go in so you may call me selfish but the store allowed me too so fuxk off!

tinytemper66 · 06/05/2020 17:15

To not too!

Warsawa31 · 06/05/2020 17:16

You can buy whatever the shop sells - there’s nothing in the law that says how many items you need to buy.
It’s up to them isn’t it?

StatisticalSense · 06/05/2020 17:17

Well obviously no supermarket is going to ask for medical evidence from those claiming to be vulnerable and it relies on self policing but if people who don't need the extra protection of a quieter hour start going at those times it rather defeats the object.

tinytemper66 · 06/05/2020 17:18

Actually Tesco asked me to bring documentation in case I was asked but no one asked me for on the day!

Hamm87 · 06/05/2020 17:19

Sorry but I think its fucking stupid ppl going out just for one or two items you do without until you need more items I ran out of bread 4 days ago and just used other things to eat them today went to the local shop and bought wait for it 2 loaves of bread some cheese some meat some veg yes so all the ppl who go to the shop really piss me off for 1 item I have a high risk family too so all the fucking tears that go out for 1 item could be putting alot of ppl at risk and I would blame all those fuckers for the amount of deaths in the uk I have also lost 4 ppl I know and they had only been to shops once a week for food none were high risk so I really get you op

Mrsjayy · 06/05/2020 17:20

The vulnerable/disabled hour is nothing to do with being vulnerable to Corona virus people just seem to be interpreting "the rules" now.

Hamm87 · 06/05/2020 17:20

Twats not tears

Saz42 · 06/05/2020 17:22

I'm with you on this OP. I know people who are popping out to the shops to give them something to do. And the person I know is in the at risk category (as are over 70s). I know they are allowed to do this, but it isn't very sensible. (Touch wood) I am healthy but am still only going out once a fortnight for food shopping. No way would I put myself at risk for some cheese and a newspaper!

Topseyt · 06/05/2020 17:22

It is beyond why anyone gives a flying fuck what is going into someone else's shopping trolley in the supermarket.

I never even notice. Am I unusual?

catinasplat · 06/05/2020 17:23

And really, no-one cared about the over 70s in care homes and nursing homes - pretty much corporate manslaughter caused by the government's negligent policy over care homes and COVID-19. Over 70s in nursing homes were hardly shielded - quite the reverse. It's a national scandal.

Yes. It's plays nicely into the government's hands for hoi polloi to be bitching about each other's shopping habits instead of getting angry about this and the other momumental cock ups.

Topseyt · 06/05/2020 17:24

Beyond me that should have read. Must proof read properly.

Good for you, do you want a medal? I swear it's competitive lockdown on here lol.
You do realise that not everyone's circumstances are the same, right?
Not everyone for example would be able to afford to only do one "big shop" every fortnight and have to go a couple of times a week.

TinRoofRusty · 06/05/2020 17:25

Another ageist judgemental rant about what others are doing that you disapprove of. Mind your own business and get a life! Saw a grandmother, mother and two boys out on the trail today, they asked for some directions, I was kitted it out like a walker, which I am, so they mentioned it must be busier now with lockdown. I said, 'Yes! And that's good! People going out, getting fit and fresh air, what's not to like?' Try focusing on the good in your life than people with two items in a fucking shopping queue.

Alsohuman · 06/05/2020 17:26

The sooner everyone’s back at work and has something else to occupy their minds the better.

TinRoofRusty · 06/05/2020 17:26

No, Topsey, you're not.

Drivingdownthe101 · 06/05/2020 17:27

Amen to this. Are people so bored that they’ve taken to counting the items of shopping in people’s baskets?

Xenia · 06/05/2020 17:28

Yes, just cut people some slack. None of us know what others are going through. In the almost empty Tesco express today and given I was out for work purposes (to ensure I keep earning to pay the wages of nurses) I didn't feel any wickedness in buying 4 top up items. In fact it means when I do my weekly bigger shop I will have a bit less to buy so be less trouble for others if it happens to be busy when I do that shopping.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 06/05/2020 17:28

No, just normal Grin
I mean, I must just be my own little oblivious self but I never notice what others are buying.
I certainly don't stand thinking "Outrage! That woman looks too old to be out and about, shouldn't she be in and what does she think she's playing at with only two items in her trolley?! Chocolate?"

Grin

It’s the government that everyone’s ire should be directed at, not someone buying cheese from the supermarket. If supermarkets were such dangerous places, how come supermarket staff haven’t been dropping like flies?

Mgby1 · 06/05/2020 17:29

Yanbu I've said this for weeks now and people on here having a go at me. I work in a small supermarket and was getting so angry with people coming in for what I would term pointless crap.... 3 weeks later I've tested positive for the virus and am currently in hospital. I've been so careful washing hands etc. Children not been out since march17th. I've caught this from work because of selfish idiots no other way to describe them

catinasplat · 06/05/2020 17:30

Hi Hamm87. I was just wondering what research you have read that shows going out for one item is a risk factor for contracting COVID-19? I am wondering why the government hasn't flagged this up along with the other risk factors?

bethg21 · 06/05/2020 17:30

I fail to see how anyone else's shopping is any of your business tbh

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 06/05/2020 17:30

I'm sorry you're ill Flowers hope you get better soon.
Pointless crap though to you is somebody else's essentials.
Who are we to police what others buy?
