He said government cannot go on like this...

OP posts:
DianaT1969 · 05/05/2020 11:10

This gave some companies the chance to pivot. For example switching to drive through and take away coffee, or product lines switched to production of PPE. It gave other companies time to put social distancing measures in place - spaced out work benches/acrylic panels/sanitizer stations/deep cleans/vehicle allocation etc.
Some business owners I know are getting their people back off furlough this month. It depends on the sector and if there is demand.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 05/05/2020 11:10

Means testing is expensive and time consuming. New systems would need to be built for it - swifter and better VFM to implement a universal system

LaurieMarlow · 05/05/2020 11:10

I suspect those who normally aren’t effected much by recessions (pensioners, public sector workers) are going to get a very sharp wake up call this time. And soon.

AlwaysCheddar · 05/05/2020 11:10

Restrict and reclaim any dividends paid by companies who have received furlough payments.

GinDaddyRedux · 05/05/2020 11:10

@DateandTime

You know that means testing has a cost attached to it? (time, money)

LilacTree1 · 05/05/2020 11:11

They should never have bloody started like this!

LaurieMarlow · 05/05/2020 11:11

Affected

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 05/05/2020 11:12

Reduce the furlough payments to uc credit levels ?

Not many people on furlough cous survive on UC rates. It's designed to cripple and punish the unemployed and only cover absolute basics. £950-£1000ish a month for a single parent with 1 child, that likely wouldn't cover a lot of people's car, council tax and phone payments a month, let lone rent, insurance, food etc etc.

Purpletigers · 05/05/2020 11:12

Mama - I never said it was fair . Nothing about this is fair . If people aren’t working they can apply for uc. Apparently it’s enough to live on . Just !

YouJustDoYou · 05/05/2020 11:13

Lots of money is going to people who don't need it, such as £10k grants are being given to second home owners/holiday homes. So basically the rich are being given free money and working taxpayers are going to be paying more for all this

What a moronic thing to say.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 05/05/2020 11:14

What did people expect?

The government can’t keep paying 80% wages, helping small businesses etc.

Financially as a country we are going to struggle after all this, we are heading for a recession and no group is going to be safe from it. This crisis has cost us so much money

Purpletigers · 05/05/2020 11:16

Monkey - the furlough scheme cannot continue indefinitely. I’m sure many people already on UC can’t survive on it either . What’s your point ?

BovaryX · 05/05/2020 11:16

Prior to any of this, the UK's benefit bill was 100 billion. That figure does not include pensions.

LaurieMarlow · 05/05/2020 11:17

They need to prioritise opening up whatever sectors of the economy are feasible to do so and will be able to make some money.

In order to do that, childcare provision and schools will have to be phased back too.

Kelsoooo · 05/05/2020 11:17

@Purpletigers

Both your comments are stupid.

One/. Why should we put onto UC which a)won't pay out until we're back at work and b)is means tested? For a lot of people who both work full time, only 80% of their salary upto £2.5k is far less than they earn so they're already in dire straits. Because as with all things, generally people live to what they can afford.

Two/. Not my fault other people are on NMW and I'm not, DH and I work hard and clawed our way up, literally dragging ourselves out of the poverty riddled childhoods, with absolutely no help from family, working full time whilst raising children and completing degrees....all so we weren't on NMW and could give our kids the step we never had. So no, the NMW lot aren't working so I can sit around at home.

For a start, a lot of people that are still working....are on above this pay packet.

TrickorTreacle · 05/05/2020 11:17

Send the bill to China.

cacaca · 05/05/2020 11:18

No party in power in Britain would have been able to financially sustain this.

LaurieMarlow · 05/05/2020 11:19

Send the bill to China.

The suggestions from the 12 year old aren’t helping this debate.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 05/05/2020 11:20

I never said the furlough could continue.

What’s your point ?
Should have been fairly obvious.
People couldn't live on UC rates so suggesting such is a stupid idea. Is that clearer?

BovaryX · 05/05/2020 11:21

No party in power in Britain would have been able to financially sustain this

Precisely. The economic impact of the spread of this virus across the globe has been devastating.

Purpletigers · 05/05/2020 11:22

Kelso - my comments aren’t stupid . You just don’t like them .
If you’re furloughed then the people still working ARE paying you . If people were earning more than 2.5k x2 a month and spent it all then they’re the stupid ones ?

Purpletigers · 05/05/2020 11:23

Monkey - well people won’t have a choice ! Is they clearer ?

Purpletigers · 05/05/2020 11:23

That

Tessaraqt · 05/05/2020 11:25

There are some companies (I'm talking about B&Q here specifically), who aren't facing financial loss. Their last weeks profit was 20MILLION more than the same week last year. They are also using the furlough scheme and having the government pay the staffs wages. Completely unacceptable, and I think it's definitely not a sustainable scheme.

I think reducing Furlough in line with UC rates is a start. Plenty of people have for long enough said how benefits are far too generous. Let's see how they feel after having to live on them 🤷🏻‍♀️ Poverty is a great equaliser.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 05/05/2020 11:26

the chinese data shows that even if you open up, the demand is still not there.

This is what happens when you govern by propaganda
