To think we shouldn’t be expected to buy uniform for the next school year

It’s a ridiculous expense at the best of times but it may barely get worn

OP posts:
LoisLittsLover · 04/05/2020 15:16

Surely your dc can wear it at home if it bothers you that much

LaurieFairyCake · 04/05/2020 15:17

Why would a kid wear it at home if there was no school - that's just bizarre

RedskyAtnight · 04/05/2020 15:18

Well presumably you wouldn't buy it unless it looked by July/August that it would be worn?

And if you have barely worn uniform sell it onto smaller children?

SunbathingDragon · 04/05/2020 15:18

Why don’t you wait nearer to the time and see if your school has any second hand sales if it’s a struggle to afford?

DaisylovesDonald · 04/05/2020 15:19

Why wouldn’t it get work in the next school year? Are you saying children will not spend much time in school September - July? I think that is unlikely. But if you’re worried just buy the absolute basics and top up if necessary?

OhLook · 04/05/2020 15:19

I wouldn't buy it unless the schools were opening.

Has someone asked you to?!

GrimmsFairytales · 04/05/2020 15:20

We've only just entered May, surely even in more normal times you wouldn't be looking to buy it this early?

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 04/05/2020 15:20

What sort of stupid, unhelpful comment is that? Bitchy just for the sake of being bitchy

OP, my DC both need new uniform now but I'm holding off buying it. Are you being told you have to buy it now?

Starlightstarbright1 · 04/05/2020 15:22

Well if you wait till next Sunday there will probably be a plan for September, however no don’t buy it the beginning of May

Angel2702 · 04/05/2020 15:23

I’m wondering how on earth we will get secondary uniform for mine when it has switched from Easily obtainable to only available from a tiny shop in odd sizes. It’s bad enough usually with queues of people no idea how they’ll manage to fit kids for uniform 30 mins at a time.

Redskylark · 04/05/2020 15:24

Surely given everything that is going on this will just be one of those things you suck up?

HoneysuckIejasmine · 04/05/2020 15:24

Has anyone asked you to? Just buy what you need, when you need to. i.e. one too, one bottom. I agree that I certainly wouldn't be buying a blazer if my kid was only going in one day a week but I like to hop schools would recognise this anyway. Academies need to make money somehow though I guess 🙄

TW2013 · 04/05/2020 15:25

Have your dc grown (substantially)? Are they changing schools? If yes then buy new uniform when you know that the schools are going back. If not then why would you buy new uniform? Mine get new (or new to them) uniform under the above conditions. I am hopeful that DD might not need another pair of school shoes, her feet have stopped growing, she is yr10 and for sixth form can wear what she likes won't be school shoes.

No you shouldn't be expected to buy it until there's definite, concrete plans to get schools back up and running. There are many people who have lost income streams at the moment, with very little chance of getting them back any time soon. Any teacher with an inch of common sense would understand that uniform is not a priority at the moment.

Who knows whether the supermarkets will even be able to meet demand when it comes to it - the factories are likely to be affected to some extent.

TW2013 · 04/05/2020 15:26

Oh and if starting secondary then buy big.

cologne4711 · 04/05/2020 15:27

I'd wait and see for the moment. There was another thread somewhere about hoping that this situation would lead to schools being more flexible about uniform (and stopping sourcing it from expensive providers when the Sainsbury's version will do).

PinkSparkleUnicorns · 04/05/2020 15:28

Do you want students to wear their own clothes? Or do you want someone else to buy the uniform for you?

Either way I think YABU and should buy a uniform.

ClaudiaWankleman · 04/05/2020 15:28

It's a privilege to be in a financial position where you can suck it up though @Redskylark

Blondiecub0109 · 04/05/2020 15:28

I think you AIBU about next year but in line with a thread the other day, I think they should relax it for summer term. Like plain unbranded T-shirts and jeans/shorts/trousers. Fortunately DS is Tom young for uniform, but if want to wash his everyday if he was in school soon (ps I’m not a dementor, I don’t wash my shopping etc I just think I’d want/will wash everything everyday once we’re back in office/nursery)

Blondiecub0109 · 04/05/2020 15:29

*for summer term IF there’s any return, staggered or otherwise

HaveAtEm · 04/05/2020 15:31

Why are you thinking about this now? It's the 4th of May 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

ReadilyAvailable · 04/05/2020 15:34

Why would a kid wear it at home if there was no school - that's just bizarre

When the schools closed, DS’s headteacher told all the kids (and parents via email) that they should all get up, put on their school uniform and then follow the school timetable during standard school hours.

Obviously no one is wearing their uniform.

Runnerduck34 · 04/05/2020 15:35

I will buy it in the summer, but I expect schools will go back in September, its probably only a big issue if your child is moving up to secondary school, otherwise just top up on a few bits/ essentials or wait until they go back.

TeaAndBiscuits666 · 04/05/2020 15:39

My DD had a mid year growth spurt so had new uniform in February. As long as it still fits, that's what she will be wearing in September as it's only been worn for a few weeks.

minisoksmakehardwork · 04/05/2020 15:40

Why not buy clothes as and when your children outgrow them? With the exception of a new set for picture day, we've always had hand downs from older to younger and bought big to last as long as possible, so mine don't always have a full brand new uniform on the first day back after the summer holiday.
