To think we shouldn’t be expected to buy uniform for the next school year

It’s a ridiculous expense at the best of times but it may barely get worn

Is someone expecting you to buy it right now? It’s not been decided yet when schools will go back, or in what format, for all you no schools may even say you don’t need to buy uniform yet anyway. Just wait and see.

starfishmummy · 04/05/2020 15:40

If they have grown then just buy when you know they are going back and buy big enough to last into the next school year. If they are moving schools or leaving then shoehorn then into the existing one until july.

PineappleDanish · 04/05/2020 15:47

It's only a ridiculous expense if your child attends one of those schools where they have logos on everything.

My kids' school uniform is basic black trousers/ skirt and white shirt. Can be bought cheaply anywhere. Will be buying as usual in summer.

TerrorWig · 04/05/2020 15:47

It’s May. I think you’re overthinking.

DominaShantotto · 04/05/2020 15:48

Why are you thinking about this now? It's the 4th of May

I'm normally sorted for next year by now! Then it gets to sit and glare at me from a corner of the living room menacingly for months until I get round to labelling it!

I've got one moving school - chucked the winter uniform when schools closed down and I've got hand me down summer dresses from the older sibling that will get us through the last few weeks if they reopen. Then I'll just buy next size up as normal at least for the eldest, pass down if it's looking uncertain when school will reopen for the youngest and some stuff needed to be replaced anyway like school shirts which were just grey and manky and whiteboard pen marked.

worldsworststepfordwife · 04/05/2020 15:48

You’re all right I know that really I think I’ve spent too much time on the going back to school threads that it just sounds like a never ending shit show

Loads of people I know start buying uniform in June as by the hols it can be a struggle to find some sizes

I’m thinking of dressing my DS in his school shorts and school polos this week. I need to wash my martial arts pants (doing lessons on Facebook Live) and need some whites for a wash.

Would this be mean? May as well get some use out of them Wink

shushymcshush · 04/05/2020 16:04

Just chill.

When the kids are due to go back, they will be expected to wear uniform, as per norm.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 04/05/2020 16:19

I wouldn’t worry about anything until there’s a more concrete plan for where you live.
Mine will have to squeeze into what we’ve got to start with.
They’ll probably need new shoes but we’ll get them as soon as we can once we know that they’re going back.

vanillandhoney · 04/05/2020 16:20

Just don't buy anything yet. Wait until you know what's happening first. Millions of people will be in the same boat as you.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 04/05/2020 16:21

Time for a rethink overall on school uniform - this is ideal opportunity to insist that its just plain, unbranded and affordable. Maybe with a free tie.

School uniform is the straw too many that gets HUGE numbers of low income families into cycles of debt. It's a disgrace and entirely within school governors gift to sort out.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 04/05/2020 16:22

And people do start buying it in May, as a way to spread the cost. Not because they are overthinking or control freaks.

EveryLifeHasASoundtrack · 04/05/2020 16:25

Surely your dc can wear it at home if it bothers you that much

This is brilliant. Grin

polexiaaphrodesia · 04/05/2020 16:31

I've ordered DS new school jumpers for when he starts reception in September. I imagine social distancing in factories around the world will mean there are limits and delays to production and supply chains. I don't want to be stressing in the summer when I cant get hold of jumpers. I figure he will be starting school at some point and will need a uniform to wear so have just bought a bigger size.

TheMagiciansMewTwo · 04/05/2020 17:08

We bought a new blazer just before lockdown because DS had grown. He hasn't had the chance to wear it.At this rate, by the time they go back it might be too small for him and we'll have a brand new shiny blazer that's never been worn.

GinNotGym19 · 04/05/2020 17:09

You don’t really need to buy uniform unless your child’s a new starter or grown loads. I do have to get mine new shoes if the rumour Is true about key workers kids going back in June but only going to get cheap supermarket ones.

I’m not getting new uniform for sept cos this years has barely been worn and I try and get a size up and use those stretchy sizers inside the skirts and roll cardi sleeves up. There is uniform available all year round too so unless something’s been outgrown you don’t need to buy it

viewfromthecouch · 04/05/2020 17:11

My youngest DC is moving up to Year 7 and will need an (awful) new, overpriced secondary uniform.

The overpriced, uncomfortable logo-ed pieces can only be bought in one local shop. Which is closed. And dead tiny.

No way we'll be ready to go. I won't order any of it online as DD will need to try the stuff on to see if they even make it in her tiny size!

This would be a fantastic time for the government to finally stop this practice and order schools to allow students to wear non-school branded items or have multiple suppliers for each and every piece of it to bring down prices.

AuditAngel · 04/05/2020 17:25

Our primary forwarded a message saying the only school shop are now booking appointments up to end of September.

I may have thrown her cardigan out as it was small and the sleeve was frayed, if she does go back this school year, she will either wear a plain navy cardigan or her PE hoody until I can source a new one.

Yurona · 04/05/2020 17:34

My oldest is wearing his uniform for online lessons. It makes it easier for him to distinguish between school days and weekend.

OnTheMoors · 04/05/2020 18:00

Our uniform supplier e mailed today to say they won't start working on orders until July . That shows they are on furlough until end of June ? They recommend only buying one of each item at first. Just wait and be sensible about this

TheClootieDumplin · 04/05/2020 18:03

Surely you would have bought it anyway? Or have you sprayed your children in some kind of 'stop growing' potion this year.

NeedAUsernameGenerator · 04/05/2020 18:09

I usually buy uniform in June or July for September but I have a DD going to secondary next year and I don't really want to buy hers on the internet because I'm not really sure about sizes. So I guess I'll just wait until shops open or I have no choice. Don't need much for DD2 luckily, probably just polo shirts and new shoes.

SpokeTooSoon · 04/05/2020 18:10

Goodness, the things people find to whinging about.

nexttimestop · 04/05/2020 18:12

I've already bought the uniform for next year except the shoes.

runrabbitrunrunrun · 04/05/2020 18:16

Who do you want to pay for the uniform then??? The school?! Tax payers?!? China?!?!
