To think we shouldn’t be expected to buy uniform for the next school year

It’s a ridiculous expense at the best of times but it may barely get worn

Actually, I agree, but I hate school uniforms anyway.

My dc is in adult sizes so it's a massive expense so I'll be waiting til the last minute. I'm so fucked off with all this. He needs to get back!

Wtfdidwedo · 04/05/2020 18:19

Mine started preschool in January and probably hadn't even worn some of her uniform. She only managed about 7 weeks of school as she had chicken pox halfway through February as well. Such a waste of money.

Healthyandhappy · 04/05/2020 18:23

Wear it next year? Mine is well worn as buy asda stuff as only in primary tbh.

PleasantVille · 04/05/2020 18:24

Who is making you buy it?

I've had children at school for many years and I'm sure I must be doing school uniform wrong as I've never found it to be a thing. I think some people don't have enough to do and make out it's something it isn't.

I'm sure my area isn't unique, we get school logo-ed stuff from one place and skirts, trousers etc from a supermarket or chain store and all the big shops sell uniform all year round.

Kittywampus · 04/05/2020 18:27

One of mine starts reception this year. I won't be buying anything until we know for sure that school will be back to normal in September. We've got ages before need to worry about it. And if for some strange reason it is impossible to buy school uniform in August then the school will just have to put up with him wearing non uniform for the first few weeks. I am sure it will be a long, long way down the list of things they have to worry about.

SarahTancredi · 04/05/2020 18:29

I thought I'd been nice and organised buying the summer play suits only for lockdown to occur and they probably not get worn.

I'm not buying anything until we know they are going to go back . And even then not sure what to do about shoes cos i dont want to immediately hit a massive shopping centre and sit in a shop for 2 hours waiting so I'm.hoping for a bit of lee way tbh. Play suits and dm boots are the plan at this stage .

Dd2 gonna be harder cos theirs is an online only company and it takes weeks to arrive but I'm.not I'm.not ordering until its definate they're back for good and we have caught up financially tbh.

I will be disgusted with any school who decides that uniform violations after a lock.down where everyones either lost their job, or on 80 percent of their wages or disnt get paid til june when rye self employed package is meant to kick in , are what's important.

Who is gonna afford it after all this

SarahTancredi · 04/05/2020 18:30

Sorry dd1 the online only

HaveAtEm · 04/05/2020 18:32

Those of you saying ‘yes, but I’ve normally bought it all by now ready for September to be organised’...well fine! But this year, with what is going on, that means your ‘uniform organisation’ might not be priority right now...it certainly isn’t essential shopping. If you need start your organising, either for financial reasons (understandable of course) or because you just ‘need to’ (🤔) perhaps you could put aside the money ‘in readiness’ to purchase?

BeetrootRocks · 04/05/2020 18:32

I've got one going to secondary in sept, other DD went 2 years ago, it is a big spend and stuff does run out.

However, we've not heard from the school yet and I would think (hope!) if it's late notice there will be some leniency with it while things settle, whenever it is they actually go back.

So it hadn't even crossed my mind.

Love the wear it at home comment! What a twat.

Needtobepositive · 04/05/2020 18:35

I went through the two youngests uniform (and second hand stuff we’ve been given to grow into) and I think they’ll both only need shoes, so that’s one weight off my mind. The eldest is starting secondary though so will expect some stressing about that as we haven’t been given lists or anything yet. I guess we will get them when they know what’s going on. Don’t want them too early or they’ll grow but not too late or won’t be able to get any of it.

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 04/05/2020 18:40

My DS is wearing his school trousers every day. Comfortable, washable, stain proof. It’s not as if any of his friends are going to see him and take the piss.

Gawdsake2020 · 04/05/2020 18:42

YABU for the sheer sake it’s 5 months away!

MintyMabel · 04/05/2020 18:42

What sort of stupid, unhelpful comment is that?

Would be a solution here. Uniform is a logo's polo shirt. DD will be wearing hers if this goes on much longer as they have plenty of wear left in them.

BendingSpoons · 04/05/2020 18:48

I bought DD new school shoes in Feb half term. Obviously they haven't got much wear except she has started wearing them at home because she likes them. She is only 4 though!

YeOldeTrout · 04/05/2020 18:49

I sell 2nd hand uniform for charity... this should be my very busiest time (from now until end June). Some stuff is indeed selling. Flabberghasts me when we don't know if/when schools will reopen.

SarahTancredi · 04/05/2020 18:56

YABU for the sheer sake it’s 5 months away!

Dds secondary school had the uniform sale on the second induction day. At the very least that's where you try it on of you are buying fir the first time. The m&s discount is in what? June maybe?

Fir the online uniform company stuff by the time you factor in allowing for the turn around period for having to send it back, waiting for refunds , re ordering, and giving a month or more for delivery theres not actually too much time left. Especially anyone who had already booked and paid for a holiday in august.

Theres not much time to recover financially and order stuff in time

opticaldelusion · 04/05/2020 19:20

If you're at state school, why on earth are you buying uniform at the moment. If you're at fee-paying school, suck it up and stop whining.

pigoons · 04/05/2020 19:29

As someone who had to buy new school shoes 2 weeks before lockdown this resonates with me. I will be buying the bare minimum as I expect further periods of lockdown later in the year

QueenofLouisiana · 04/05/2020 19:32

I’d really like DS’s school to acknowledge that he has managed to do his (mountains) of work at home without wearing a uniform! They are incredibly tight on uniform (and generally), ties askew are “defiance” and punish accordingly. Perhaps cut them a little more slack when they return- he’s yr10 and has enough to worry about.

nicky2512 · 04/05/2020 19:35

I, like a previous poster am more worried about how to get uniform. Only available in two shops both of which are always packed July and August. And ds is a nightmare to get trousers that fit. He always needs to try on loads to get the right ones.
Don’t even want to think about shoes!
I hate shopping at the best of times!

DominaShantotto · 04/05/2020 19:43

I need to buy well in advance as well in order to work buttons so they're not as stiff and so DD2 might have a chance in hell of being able to use them as well. It's distinctly not fun having to sit there on a night watching telly and repeatedly unbuttoning and buttoning shirt fiddly buttons but it helps no end.

Whathappenedtothelego · 04/05/2020 19:58

To be honest, aside from the cost, I'd much prefer if my Dc didn't have to wear uniform at present.

Mainly from an infection control point of view - once schools go back I'd rather they changed when they got home and chuck everything in the washing machine. Much easier with jeans and a hoodie and just wear a different one the next day, rather than trying to clean a (dry clean only) blazer every day.

Livelovebehappy · 04/05/2020 20:00

Schools have been closed for 6 weeks, and talk of returning to school beginning of June. Three weeks of that period are/were school holidays, so you’re moaning about the uniforms not being worn for 7 weeks??

Nousernameforme · 04/05/2020 20:02

I bought brand new school shoes on the Monday we were in isolation by the Tuesday and then school locked down on the Friday. I hope he can get some wear out them them before they are too small.

I will buy stuff I can get online. I do not think taking him school shopping at peak time is a good idea we will wear supermarket jumpers as well instead of school ones next year as I also don't think they will be there often enough to warrant £30 a jumper when i can get 2 for £12 from john lewis

Ilovecats14 · 04/05/2020 20:08

I brought brand new uniform including shoes and blazer in January. I will just buy it again if it doesn't fit I would have had to buy it again anyway if he had outgrown it while at school.
