Anyone think travel in June is likely?

Emcont · 04/05/2020 09:36

I personally do not. But I'm interested in other peoples opinions.

We are booked to fly on June 22nd to Majorca. Tui have cancelled flights up to the 11th June, but say holidays after this date are likely to go ahead. (Which is what they've said after every date change).

I'm hoping our flights are cancelled, so we can reshedual for June next year, as I don't want to go this year now regardless.

Yabu - No one is travelling anytime soon
Yanbu - Yes, it's a possibility

Sorry I don't know the answer, but I just came on to say I'm running on no sleep and I initially thought your title said "Anyone think time travel in June is likely" and it really made me laugh! As you were Grin

notimagain · 04/05/2020 11:53

Anyone think travel to France from the U.K. is likely in July/August? This would be to stay with family in a rural area, we could self isolate as long as needed.

Your guess is as good a mine TBH, you need to keep an eye on the rules as (hopefully) they are relaxed..

For example even when we (in France) start to go into a slighter lighter version of lockdown w.e.f from 11th May initially as I understand it journeys of more than 100 km will only be allowed for essential purposes...and the French restrictions do need to be taken seriously because the Gendarmes do get out and about - you do get stopped checked, and fined if you are in breach of the legislation.

PermanentTemporary · 04/05/2020 11:55

My feeling would be that it's vanishingly unlikely. I'm hoping we might be able to go on our holiday to Wales in mid August and I'm not certain of that.

Iknewyouwerewaitingforme · 04/05/2020 11:59

We’ve booked a private villa in Mallorca in August. Next instalment due soon so we told the owner due to unlikely chances we’d be able to travel and fact my mum is in elderly and underlying health conditions - is very vulnerable group- that we need to cancel or she could hold onto our deposit but we move to next year. She’s being intensely annoying, calling Corona “bad luck” and has her head totally in clouds saying she thinks Mallorca will resume a back to normal return if flights/ tourism/ everything opening end of June. So basically she’s trying to hold onto 800 Euros of ours saying we have decided to cancel and it’s just our bad luck.

Cremebrule · 04/05/2020 12:17

I’m meant to have a holiday at the end of June. Nothing has been cancelled yet but we’ve not actually been able to get a passport for our baby. The passport office tells you not to apply unless it’s an emergency so we’re hoping everything is cancelled (assume it will be) as otherwise we might be unable to go because of the passport situation.

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 04/05/2020 12:24

We have a holiday to Turkey with Jet 2 booked.

They have cancelled all holidays until June 17th but we are due to travel on June 18th.

I really do not want to go and would like to re book for next year but at the moment we have to wait for further news. If foreign office advice remains the same in June then Jet 2 have said they will review the situation and possibly cancel and offer us a refund/alternative date.

I am assuming that the foreign office advice will stay the same tbh, can you imagine the back lash if they say it is safe to travel again and thousands go on holiday but high numbers either become ill while away or when they return home? Common sense would say there will be a significantly higher risk of catching coronaviris if you are swimming in communal pool and sharing an all inclusive buffet with 100's of people but you could still get many people who would accuse the government of misleading the public and endangering lives.

metronome1 · 04/05/2020 12:57

@Cremebrule you can still get passports for non emergencies, it's just taking longer. We were in the same position with our baby but have applied anyway, because if the holiday company do not cancel we would be thousands out of pocket due to us having to cancel as no passport for baby. If I were you I would apply now online and quickly.

@24SunburstsOrMarbleHalls we are the same as you. Supposed to fly on the 18th and all holidays are cancelled with the company we used until 17th. Its a worry. We have paid the full amount and so we can't decide to cancel it has to come from them or we lose everything.

Its not important in the grand scheme of things with everything going on in the world but the unknown is causing a lot of anxiety. I wish the holiday company would just cancel or let us transfer to another time.

Xenia · 04/05/2020 13:05

Yes, apply for baby's passport as might as well have it. It may not even take that long as fewer people are applying at present.

it would certainly be good to have certainty. I think we will have to decide by 1 June if we are going on 23 June and the holiday company will have to tell us by then too as then it is getting a bit close to flight date (and I am not paying the full balance anyway unless we are 100% sure)

DazedandConcerned · 04/05/2020 13:16

Turkey and Greece are making moves to open for tourists mid-June to early July before potentially shutting up again for second wave in October or November.

I can't see Egypt before August or September, however they are starting internal tourism to Hurghada and Sharm after the end of Ramadan.

Spain, France or Italy it could be September or later I suspect potentially after a vaccine is available.

Cremebrule · 04/05/2020 13:17

metronome1 That’s interesting. We thought we’d not be able to get one. I’ll get moving with the application. Thank you.

AgeLikeWine · 04/05/2020 13:22

It’s very, very unlikely that non-essential leisure travel to or from countries which have been hit hardest by covid such as the U.K., Spain, France, Italy, USA etc etc will be possible until the autumn at the very earliest.

Non-essential between countries which have not been hit so hard, eg Germany, Greece, Australia, NZ is more likely to be possible at some point this summer.

fussychica · 04/05/2020 13:22

We should have been in Spain for the whole of May and June, touring and a long stay in a villa. We cancelled everything in April. We have a booking for Nov in Portugal and was thinking we might drive down through Spain and stay there through October and add Portugal to the end.
I don't think even that is going to happen. I'm now looking at doing the original Spain trip this time next year but won't book anything until 2021 because even that might be a problem if there is a 2nd wave.

101problems · 04/05/2020 13:23

I live in Spain.

I very much doubt you will be travelling.

At the moment (excluding some work) we are not allowed to venture more than 1km from where we live, nevermind get near an airport.

The lockdown is being gradually amended to the 'new normal'. It has 4 phases and we just entered phase 1.

As it currently stands, people resident in Spain will only be able to travel outside of their province at the end of 'phase 4' which is scheduled to be completed by the end of June. That's if cases don't start rising during this de-escalation period.

So in short, I think the chances of you being able to travel in Spain are as close to zero as they could be, and the holiday company should be being honest about it, especially considering what the Spanish government has said.

Maybelatte · 04/05/2020 13:26

Definitely not. My Mum has a holiday to Spain booked in July and I think that will be cancelled.

bellabasset · 04/05/2020 13:31

The only issue I can see for people postponing their holidays for next year will be the possibility of an increase in costs. The prediction is that due to social distancing, additional precautions at airports there will be less and more expensive flights.

bellabasset · 04/05/2020 13:34

I should have added that I would be seeking a refund rather than a voucher in case the cost becomes prohibitive

Iknewyouwerewaitingforme · 04/05/2020 13:49

Hi 101problems do you think the same will apply for Mallorca? Thanks

Iknewyouwerewaitingforme · 04/05/2020 13:54

This saying Spain/ islands will start returning to normal in June?

Anyone think travel in June is likely?
Fluffybutter · 04/05/2020 13:58

Should add though that anything anyone says on here is pure speculation.
No one on here knows more than the government of any of these countries or even what way this virus will go .
Keep it booked until they cancel themselves or preempt and rebook for next year

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 04/05/2020 14:01

metronome1 we have also paid the full amount so we shall see what will happen. DH is keen to go but I am really concerned.

101problems · 04/05/2020 14:01

The main issue is we will return to a 'new normal', so it won't be how Spain was in February before this all happened.

If the government is only allowing people resident in Spain to start being able to travel to other provinces at the earliest by the end of June, I'd think it is highly unlikely they'll be opening up to foreign tourists for the summer season.

Already there will be restrictions such as bars and restaurants having to operate at a much lower capacity, as well as additional regulations for social distancing when in public.

Even though I regularly travel around Spain, and frequently spend the weekend in Madrid, I personally am not assuming I will be there again this year. Mainly because I don't think the traditional things people do when trying to 'relax' such as eating out, staying at a hotel, going to bars is going to feel very chilled or relaxing.

Ilovecats14 · 04/05/2020 15:17

I do not think it will happen.

Justmuddlingalong · 04/05/2020 15:25

We're booked for Mexico for the middle of July. DP mentioned about making a Dr's appointment for his holiday injections today. I've told him we have as much chance of going anywhere, as he has of getting his lockdown backside into his swimming trunks

Spied · 04/05/2020 15:30

I certainly wouldn't be going even if it was all going ahead ( it won't be)

Midsommar · 04/05/2020 15:40

I really hope so...my long-awaited honeymoon is booked for the end of June.

Sadly I'm telling myself now that this is probably not going to happen.
