What do you consider "low income?"

People often talk about low income but I wonder if there is a set figure or if it's relative?
I would probably class as low income as I'm on UC but I don't consider myself poor like many might see me.
Just asking out of curiosity.

I earn £8.90ph I consider that low. I want to work up to £10ph

Redskylark · 03/05/2020 11:21

I guess it depends on lots of factors like location to. In rural north

7Worfs · 03/05/2020 11:22

I don’t like the word ‘poor’ tbh.

Low income I’d say is when you meet living costs without worrying, but don’t have a lot left for luxuries and savings.

Shopkinsdoll · 03/05/2020 11:22

I earn the min wage but this is mumsnet haha low income on here I can guess 60ish grand pa.

YouJustDoYou · 03/05/2020 11:22

Around £8-£8.50 ph

Reginabambina · 03/05/2020 11:24

Lowest tax band.

DFAMA · 03/05/2020 11:25

Its difficult to say without factoring in circumstances - area, number of children etc. Around here I would say if you bring in less than 1200 per month each you will really struggle but if you live up north and pay half the rent I do that's probably a good wage.

Kingjarvis · 03/05/2020 11:26

I earn minimum wage which is £8.72 so that's the lowest

WickedlyPetite · 03/05/2020 11:26

I'd class low income as less than about 22k a year.

Hopefulmidwife · 03/05/2020 11:26

Probably mine, I'm band 3 NHS but I'm on less than 20k a year. I think I'm between 18-19 atm. Either way, I'm on 8.60 an hour. Yay NHS 😂😂

Hopefulmidwife · 03/05/2020 11:27

9.60, sorry

MissMarks · 03/05/2020 11:28

Below 25k per year.

MissMarks · 03/05/2020 11:28

Hopefulmidwife- minimum wage is 8.72

OneandTwenty · 03/05/2020 11:30

mine Grin

Hopefulmidwife · 03/05/2020 11:31

Typo @MissMarks... I meant to put 9 😊

SneakersandSocks · 03/05/2020 11:33

Depends where you live...if you on 25k in London, that’s pretty low, you are probably not going to have much left over at the end of the month but up North, where rent/ mortgage is approx 50% cheaper, you will have more disposable income.

maddiemookins16mum · 03/05/2020 11:38

@Reginabambina. so are you saying anyone on the basic tax band of 1250L has low income even though they can be earning well, well over the national average? Or are you saying anyone earning less than 12,500 a year which means they dont pay tax?

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 03/05/2020 11:38

I’m nhs on £19k I consider this low in financial terms but I have a great pension and only work a 37.5 hour week with 28 days annual leave plus bank holidays. Therefore I consider myself very rich in time

RandomLondoner · 03/05/2020 11:40

Low pay is officially defined, it works out to be in the vicinity of what someone on minimum wage working full-time hours earns. I think about 15-16K a year.

stickman12 · 03/05/2020 11:41

I would say anything under 20k as low income 20k-30k comfortable and 30k and over a high earner. I live in a poorer area of the country with lower job prospects though:

LightAndDarkshadows · 03/05/2020 11:43

Wow I'm pretty shocked at those who believe under 20-25k is low Shock Teachers/NHs/police all start on less than or sound that. I would say low income is the minimum wage.

Of course it also depends where you live. I assume 25k doesn't go far in London.

Reginabambina · 03/05/2020 11:44

@maddiemookins16mum within the tax band, not under the tax free threshold.

PerfidiousAlbion · 03/05/2020 11:44

I’d say below £23,000 in the South and below £20,000 in the North. That’s very general though.

lastqueenofscotland · 03/05/2020 11:45

Anything under about £25k.

TheGirlWithAPrince · 03/05/2020 11:47

I would say anything under 25k is low, highest ive been on is 18.5k working for DWP and it was just enough to get by but i didnt have any luxurys or holidays, just bills paid and a bit of entertainment so even though it was fine it was still a wage i had to seriously budget
