What do you consider "low income?"

People often talk about low income but I wonder if there is a set figure or if it's relative?
I would probably class as low income as I'm on UC but I don't consider myself poor like many might see me.
Just asking out of curiosity.

There’s different answers for different parameters, I have a friend who earns c. £18k imo low income BUT she lives at home with no substantial outgoings. I earn significantly more but have a mortgage and childcare to fork out for.
Essentially we have the same disposable income.

Around £25k I would say is low.

@Hopefulmidwife
Same here. We in the same boat

Yes, but if the single person had kids it would still be a low income.
It doesn't matter what you do with the money when you are assessing what is or isn't a low income.
HMRC doesn't say, well yes that's a low income in the south so you get more than someone else on the same living in the north.

Whether it matters depends on what the question is, surely? HMRC don't, no. But a bank might well if you're looking to buy a house and you're in Burnley rather than Bow, given that the LTV you'll want is very different.

I was on 20k before I went part time and my partner was on the same. Written down it is a low income but we own our on home and do our best to minimise outgoings so it never seems that low.

Under 18k, I live in the South East.
