Netflix so dark

locomoco19 · 02/05/2020 21:22

Why is some of the things I watch on netflix so dark! Is there any way I can put brightness up on Netflix? Am watching on my tv. It's not my tv, as when I hVe it on normal tv it's bright, I went on to my settings and put the brightness right up and still on Netflix it's so dark and dim that I can barely even see their faces!

I think it’s just the way somethings are filmed.
I gave up trying to watch the mandalorian on Disney as it was so dark I could barely see it

chunkyrun · 02/05/2020 21:47

Are you watching the ozarks by any chance? Some shows it's how they're filmed

sluj · 02/05/2020 21:48

Last Kingdom is also incredibly dark. I spent ages yesterday messing around with the TV only to conclude it was the programme Hmm

Gtugccbjb · 02/05/2020 21:49

All films these days are jet black with muffled sound... or am I just old now?

Puddlejuice · 02/05/2020 21:57

You know Netflix have reduced the quality of their streaming by 25% to meet increased demand apparently. This has made it a bit darker on my TV too

Winnipegdreamer · 02/05/2020 22:01

I find this with sound quality on some things too (not just Netflix) I can barely hear it when others are absolutely fine!

RedRiverShore · 02/05/2020 22:07

I find this with the picture and sound, not just on Netflix, I thought it was my telly but stuff like the news and soaps are always fine so it must be the filming.

Samtsirch · 02/05/2020 22:24

Yes I have found this as well, some things on Netflix I can only watch with subtitles or the sound turned up ridiculously so, and I keep drawing the curtain across, thinking the sunlight is shining on the screen and impairing the colour but it makes no difference.
I am so glad it’s not just me !

QOFE · 02/05/2020 22:26

Yes! And the volume Hmm Watched the Hobbit with DS the other day and even with the volume at about 70 it was quiet.

ThatsWhatHeroesDo · 02/05/2020 22:27

I watched Extraction on Netflix last week. It was dark dark dark dark DAZZLING LIGHT that half bloody blinded me. A lot of things are just filmed like that. DH and I could only watch The Mandalorian at night with most of the lights off. I just watched Unicorn Store on Netflix (yes I like crappy films) and that film had its brightness cranked up to 11, no problems watching that one!

UnabashedlyNeurodifferent · 02/05/2020 22:32

Agreed. Really makes for not so pleasant viewing experience. Just finished watching the Ozarks and while a good show, I find the blue lighting or filter very unflattering and too dark. I'm usually sensitive to bright lights and sounds but even I kept trying to turn up the brightness which I'd already got to the highest setting. Same with some other shows.

JacobReesMogadishu · 02/05/2020 22:35

I just went into my tv settings yesterday and turned all the colour, brightness, etc settings I could find up full blast. Looks a bit odd now but at least I can see what’s happening. Makes sense about the companies throttling their quality making it darker, it does seem to have got worse recently with streamed tv.

Mother87 · 02/05/2020 22:54

Just started watching Ozarks - can't see a bloody thing!

Dontcoughnearme · 02/05/2020 22:59

American shows are recorded very dark, and the sound is very low. Anyone else find this?

jimmyhill · 02/05/2020 23:08

It's called Ozark not "The Ozarks" FFS

UnabashedlyNeurodifferent · 02/05/2020 23:15

It's called Ozark not "The Ozarks" FFS

Apologies for my crime. I keep forgetting what it's called.

RUSU92 · 02/05/2020 23:30

It's called Ozark not "The Ozarks" FFS

But it’s called Ozark because it’s set in the Ozarks. FFS. Calm down. Confused

locomoco19 · 02/05/2020 23:46

Glad it's not just me! Dh and I were trying to watch Extraction, I kid you not We couldn't see their faces!! Was so annoying, did some googling and it suggested chromecast, so I used chromecast to play it and guess what!? It played brighter and finally could see all the faces!! So it's Netflix with the issue and by what others have said they have done this purposely, but why?? When nothing can be seen

And omg yes the SOUND!!! I thought it was just my tv! When I watch Netflix, sound volume is on 70, and even then it's not the greatest sound quality, then when I go back to watching normal tv, I have to put it straight down to 10. We can't watch Netflix without subtitles due to poor sound

NoSoapAndGory · 02/05/2020 23:51

It's SO annoying - I'm squinting all the time.

Mind you - I'm just watching WestWorld on Sky.. they must be bloody whispering, I can hardly hear it 😡😡

ScorpionQueen · 02/05/2020 23:55

@jimmyhill did you mean to be so rude? Hmm

It is dark, I thought it was just me. I didn't make the connection with them reducing streaming quality. Makes perfect sense.

Dowser · 02/05/2020 23:58

I’m watching Ozark..with or without the ‘ the’ and the ‘s’ lol

Sound is at 100 percent, but it’s like that with all Netflix stuff..and yes it’s dark

Dowser · 03/05/2020 00:01

Can you get subtitles on Netflix?
Oh my I need them.
I also have a problem with facial recognition.
I have to keep asking poor Dh, is that the fbi bloke...he looks similar to Cade, something’s Marty , sometimes wilks
If I don’t have a visual clue with clothing..I’m screwed

Widows was one of the best films I’ve watched at the cinema..of remember the days we used to go the cinema lol.
We saw the subtitle version..and oh glory he..it even gave the name of the character who was speaking
I was loving it.

ChicChicChicChiclana · 03/05/2020 00:09

I'm watching Ozark and not really enjoying it. I gather that makes me some sort of pariah.

TwelveMonkeys · 03/05/2020 00:17

I don't think so. I watched season 3 recently and was pleasantly surprised that it was so good because season 1 and 2 had both been average/poor respectively. I looked on metacritic and turns out most critics agreed. The scores for seasons 1, 2 and 3 went 66, 59, 77. Hardly critical acclaim!

Liddell · 03/05/2020 00:19

Can you get subtitles on Netflix?

Yes, you can.

I watch a lot of things with subtitles, sometimes the background music is so loud, or actors mumbling.
