To want to sell up and buy this house by the sea?

caramara · 01/05/2020 13:40

Lockdown boredom has set in and started looking for somewhere to buy with what I could roughly have in equity if I sold my house.

I know Jaywick is a bit rough (I'm the opposite side of Essex currently so know the area a little) but still, can it really be that bad? The idea of being mortgage free is quite appealing, and the house looks like it requires no work at all, plus I love the kitchen.

And I could walk to the beach!

the house

Please tell me I'm BU/ point out all the faults with my plan!

Please spend some time in Jaywick to get a real feel of what it’s like.

CottonSock · 01/05/2020 19:23

I went to jaywick on an A level field trip on deprivation and flooding. Never will I return.

3746xvy734 · 01/05/2020 19:29

OP I love the house but I just read that Jaywick is one of the most deprived areas in the country, for that reason, I wouldn't do it.

CottonSock · 01/05/2020 19:30

Maybe look at Walton, Frinton or felixstowe. Ipswich is on the river which is pretty.

StripeyDeckchair · 01/05/2020 19:34

Its Jaywick theres a reason why it's so cheap. The whole town is deprived, there are no jobs there, crime particularly drugs is sky high.
Pay more and go somewhere else.

Anson Road, Great Yarmouth

This ^^

That’s very good for the price @JKScot4

morethanmeetstheeye · 01/05/2020 19:39

Good god. Don't move to Jaywick. It's really not somewhere to move to by choice. It's a seriously deprived area and you'll be burgled.

Truthpact · 01/05/2020 19:42

Hate the house to be honest. It's cheap for a reason, it's tiny. And in a bad area from the sounds of it. Not a chance.

Ohnoducks · 01/05/2020 19:48

Is essex important? Otherwise there are lots of nice seaside places you could live mortgage free and still have your dream, off the top of my head Marske-by-the-sea, Saltburn, Staithes, Sandsend, Whitby or Whitley bay in the North East are all really lovely places to live and you could get a 3 bed for a similar budget

Fluffybutter · 01/05/2020 19:51

OP has been told by a large majority of us that Jaywick is terrible .
The thread has moved past that now

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/05/2020 20:01

The estate agents are going to be sooo excited at the number of views this house has had....then the tumbleweed as no more enquiries ..

caramara · 01/05/2020 20:06

Did a bit of research, the Yarmouth house has been up for sale since 2015 with the same photos...not a good sign!

It doesn't have to be Essex. But I like Essex, it's my home. I'm very fond of Clacton, but also places like Maldon, Burnham and so on but they're just outside my budget. I'm reluctant to move too far away.

I'm really not a fan of the Kent coast. I've spent a lot of time around Bournemouth and the Jurassic coast but that's all way outside my budget.

Think I'll probably be putting the beach house plans on hold for a while to build up some more equity me .

What in hell's name is on the fireplace?

skybluee · 01/05/2020 20:30

Those programmes are designed to portray places in a certain light.

I'd go and see for myself. Visit in the day, in the evening. Visit both the town centre, beach and also suburban areas. Just see how it feels. You're the only one who can judge it for you.

Where I live is classed as Dudley which has a bad reputation but I haven't been into Dudley for about 3 years. I do my shopping elsewhere. So just look at where you'd actually be spending time rather than any preconceived notion. I think the house looks nice (too cluttered, but it could be tidied up).

FinnefanFox · 01/05/2020 20:42

I spend my evenings looking at beautiful houses by the sea. dreaming of the day I can move there! Go for what ever makes you happy!

sluj · 01/05/2020 20:43

That's funny skybluee. Dudley is very very posh compared to Jaywick. Grin

wonderwhatnext · 01/05/2020 20:53

It’s totally up to you of course OP and nothing g wrong with Essex. I was just wondering why it had to be Essex, as opposed to say Kent of Norfolk.

Could I say though fwiw, I think if most people were looking to move as a single person with a sin at uni, they probably wouldn’t be looking for a three bedroom house. Is it worth considering whether the need for the extra bedroom is limiting your search area?

Lavendersquare · 01/05/2020 21:07

I was expecting a really great house, this one is really meh and disappointing, I think the joy of being mortgage free would wear off really quickly and you'd be looking for something better within weeks.

HibiscusPot · 01/05/2020 21:17

I’m going to go against the grain and say if you are used to ‘rough’ then it’s not that bad. If you are used to the rough side of Essex.
I had family in Point Clear up the road, it’s certainly non-roads and some dodgy builds decorated with flags but there’s a lot of decent people around. My deal breaker though, I’d never want to bring a child up there. I felt sad watching some of them wandering through the sites in boredom.
If you drive a semi-decent car I wouldn’t go there, otherwise I’d put an offer in for half that....

HibiscusPot · 01/05/2020 21:19

I would say to @skybluee post, don’t attempt to find the centre... hiding to nowhere. It really is a mosh-mash of ex holiday homes and tracks, about 50% are shacks not houses...

Thisismytimetoshine · 01/05/2020 21:20

Well I wouldn't dream of living anywhere I wouldn't bring up children, even if I didn't actually have children... Just how shite would it have to be?

Soen · 01/05/2020 21:46

I live up north and had never heard of jaywick. I googled some images of the place, expecting to see something on a par with blackpool (no offense). Oh boy, I'm sorry Blackpool, I take it all back!

Dranktoomuchpepsi · 01/05/2020 21:56

No worse than living in Corringham or Stanford-Le-Hope! Now that wins hands down at being worse

Tr1skel1on · 01/05/2020 22:36

@Figmentofmyimagination I loved your suggestion of reading about Jaywick in Roger Deakin's book Waterlog.

I've just done exactly that, it's a lovely piece of writing that really gives a sense of the place.

I love that book, thank you for the reminding me about it. I'm going to enjoy reading more of it tonight

caramara · 02/05/2020 00:04

I think I'd rather stay put a bit longer and build up more equity han move to a 2 bed property that's smaller than where I am now. For me this isn't about downsizing, more reducing my outgoings, moving by the coast and changing my lifestyle a bit, so that I can get a dog, maybe do some volunteering, all the stuff I've not been able to previously.

It would be nice to move now but I may have to put that on hold. However it's fair to say I'm not in the nicest area now, and I certainly wouldn't say it was better than Stanford or Corringham, I'm just closer to London. So I might go have a look at Jaywick just in case (I'll combine it with a trip to Clacton)...I've seen a few more expensive 160-170k places which look like they're in the better part/ outskirts of Jaywick, and are definitely proper brick built houses which if I'm not too put off by the feel of the place might be a better bet than the house I linked in my OP.
