To want to sell up and buy this house by the sea?

caramara · 01/05/2020 13:40

Lockdown boredom has set in and started looking for somewhere to buy with what I could roughly have in equity if I sold my house.

I know Jaywick is a bit rough (I'm the opposite side of Essex currently so know the area a little) but still, can it really be that bad? The idea of being mortgage free is quite appealing, and the house looks like it requires no work at all, plus I love the kitchen.

And I could walk to the beach!

the house

Please tell me I'm BU/ point out all the faults with my plan!

Wow! I would do it.

I would probably drive to the road in the evening and just get an idea of the area but mortgage free? So worth it.

vanillandhoney · 01/05/2020 13:44

Please don't move to Jaywick. It's cheap for a reason.

WitchQueenofDarkness · 01/05/2020 13:44

It would need a lot of work for me to want it and I'd be forever hitting my head on those pitched ceilings - very little usable space.

That looks like a tiny bath too.

Shalom23 · 01/05/2020 13:45

Absolutely do it. I did similar left London now by the sea and very very low mortgage.

Best thing I ever did.

leolion81 · 01/05/2020 13:45

I'm sure I saw jaywick in a program a few years ago and it didn't paint it in a good light!
You're probably best spending some time there and getting a feel for the area before committing but i can definitely recommend living by the sea. Do you know what shops etc are like?

ShayAndBlueSeeker · 01/05/2020 13:47

Honestly, I think Jaywick is as rough as anything and the house looks very small and poky. The kitchen looks ok but pretty basic. Wouldn't move there if you paid me!

SciFiScream · 01/05/2020 13:47

I don't know the area well enough to comment but being mortgage free is a big dream of mine.

The bathrooms look like they need a little improvement though?

What would you do if you did it and hated it? Having a back up plan always allows me to decide.

caramara · 01/05/2020 13:48

See I think it's perfect as it is, though I might want to replace one of the baths with a double shower.

I haven't been to Jaywick since I was little. I accept it's probably worse than I remember.

But a detached house seems like a nice escape from my current mid terrace Grin

leolion81

I watched that programme. I thought Jaywick looked as though it had a great sense of community.

ShayAndBlueSeeker · 01/05/2020 13:50

It's only really a two bedroom house. Two of the bedrooms are downstairs and very narrow...

lastqueenofscotland · 01/05/2020 13:50

Jaywick is cheap for a reason. It is so so so deprived. There is virtually no infrastructure in regards to public transport or even proper shops.

Monkeytapper · 01/05/2020 13:50

‘Benefits by the sea’ was based in Jaywick. Looked so depressing.

wonderwhatnext · 01/05/2020 13:50

I could be wrong OP, but did I hear Jaywick was the most deprived area in the UK? Highest support for UKIP etc etc?

Would you be moving with children? What are the schools like? What do you envisage them doing as teens if they grow up there? I don’t know, but these factors might be more worthy of consideration than a beach?

What is the beach even like there?

Also the east coast can be particularly grim in winter.

isitsummertimeyet · 01/05/2020 13:51

jaywick had its own show on tv a couple of years ago, high unemployment and the areas a dump, makes blackpool look classy almost..

id rather still have a mortgage somewhere nice

It's near Clacton which I do know slightly better, and which has supermarkets etc. The nearest big town is probably Colchester.

Hadn't thought of a backup plan, that is a good point that I might hate it, I've never lived outside the M25 Blush

Jaywick is the most deprived area in the UK.

It was also built as a holiday resort and the houses were not designed to be inhabited year-round, hence why lots of them have problems with mould and poor structure etc.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 01/05/2020 13:53

A bit rough is the understatement of the century!

You’d be living in a rough shit hole, in a let’s face it small house and pokey house that will be broke in to god knows how many times

Didn’t it too the most deprived area of the uk list?

Honeyroar · 01/05/2020 13:53

I don’t know the area, but it’s a cute house. I’d knock the living room through to bedroom 2 and make it all living room- it’s much too small for a 4 bed house as it is.

vanillandhoney · 01/05/2020 13:54

Do you really want to live here?

To want to sell up and buy this house by the sea?
T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 01/05/2020 13:55

The kitchen isn’t bad, but that living area is horribly narrow. Have you taken note of how close the armchair is squashed against the sofa. It’s also very dark and I would find it claustrophobic. I don’t know the area, but if it’s as rough as other posters have suggested, you have a really tiny space between you and the road, which means any bother could literally be on your doorstep.

PatricksRum · 01/05/2020 13:58

Not a chance.
Rough as sandpaper. Crime levels. You'll get broken into within a week.

tempestterra · 01/05/2020 14:00

What's with the morgue like refrigeration units in the kitchenShock

Figmentofmyimagination · 01/05/2020 14:01

There’s a really interesting account of Jaywick - and why it is the way it is - in Roger Deakin’s wonderful book about wild swimming - Waterlog - I recommend you read it if you are thinking of moving there.

caramara · 01/05/2020 14:03

Ok, I'll admit that picture is pretty grim. There are some rough estates near me which aren't great either, although our local council are doing a programme of regeneration which is improving things.

I haven't got any school age DC, 1 at uni who is only home for the holidays (and is pretty much go with the flow although maybe not after seeing that picture).

I think I may have to give up this dream! I'd already planned where to put my furniture. And that I'd be able to get a dog :(
