To want to sell up and buy this house by the sea?

caramara · 01/05/2020 13:40

Lockdown boredom has set in and started looking for somewhere to buy with what I could roughly have in equity if I sold my house.

I know Jaywick is a bit rough (I'm the opposite side of Essex currently so know the area a little) but still, can it really be that bad? The idea of being mortgage free is quite appealing, and the house looks like it requires no work at all, plus I love the kitchen.

And I could walk to the beach!

the house

Please tell me I'm BU/ point out all the faults with my plan!

Or build your own with sea views!

Just across the border. Lovely house- and you could still walk to the beach

wonderwhatnext · 01/05/2020 17:20

It’s amazing g what you can get in Scotland, but doesn’t all that grey slate get you down? They seem to build everything out of it.

managedmis · 01/05/2020 17:23

I know it's rough as arse holes etc but I cannot believe the price of that house

Thisismytimetoshine · 01/05/2020 17:24

Hard to believe you're serious, op. I'd pay not to live in that miserable shithole.

Xenia · 01/05/2020 17:37

Not a good idea. Watch the video on the first link.

neighbourhoodwitch · 01/05/2020 17:43

I'm sorry, it is a lovely lovely house but having been to Jaywick, I would definitely not recommend buying there, but do visit and see what you think.

BigRedBoat · 01/05/2020 17:53

I knew someone who worked in jaywick for a bit, there was a siren to warn you if a flood was coming, your house won't seem so lovely if it's washed out to sea!

Lemonlady22 · 01/05/2020 17:56

Just no! I looked on street view and there are a few nice houses on that street and a few nice cars....I suspect these belong to the drug dealers that live there!

caramara · 01/05/2020 18:21

I couldn't move as far north as Scotland, or Northumberland. Even Lincolnshire seems a long way north to me!

If I could stay in Essex I would, I like Clacton but I don't think there's anything there in my price range, likewise the other seaside areas like Frinton and Walton.

“If I could stay in Essex I would...”

But why OP? Why Essex?

wonderwhatnext · 01/05/2020 18:35

I do agree though there’s no need to go as far as Scotland! You might as well go to France or Italy.

Arseit · 01/05/2020 18:42

If op has lived in London all her life then Essex probably has a degree of familiarity, plus easy to get back to family / friends / job, if needs be...
Op - Kent coast? Dunno if you’d get anything for £140k though...

DontStandSoCloseToMe · 01/05/2020 18:42

OP have you looked at Burnham and Southminster or even Maldon?

ArriettyJones · 01/05/2020 18:44

But why OP? Why Essex?

Because she like it? Because it’s her home county? Because it’s close to existing ties?

What an odd question.

There is more to Essex than TOWIE and Basildon.

kerstina · 01/05/2020 18:48

Am with you OP I would love to move to the coast anywhere by the coast got to be better than Birmingham .
I have wasted lots of time looking at houses by the sea just got to persuade DH .
He partially works at a London office so was looking for somewhere commutable to London . Was looking at frinton on sea and Leigh on sea . Anyone have any thoughts on these ?
Ideally I would live in cornwall or north wales . If I had to live in lockdown rest of my life it has to be by the sea !

Anson Road, Great Yarmouth

This ^^

wonderwhatnext · 01/05/2020 18:49

What about a small mortgage OP and something like this in Deal, Kent? I think the beach there is meant to be lovely and it’s a nice town? Good connections to Lindon. Also, there’s Canterbury nearby which has lots of character. Plus, you could hop over to somewhere like Brugge for the day! Kent is lovely and has vineyards, orchards and lots of cliff top walks. Haven’t been for years, but a friend was at uni there, so that’s how I remember it.
With this house you could add value at a later date by converting the garage into an extra living space?

RedHelenB · 01/05/2020 18:50

I live in a supposed deprived area and it's great. I had no idea housing was so cheap there, I'd do it.

cushioncovers · 01/05/2020 18:50

I was wondering why it was so cheap and then realised it was in jaywick. Op visit the town first before buying the house.

yearinyearout · 01/05/2020 18:53

Isn't it the most deprived place in Britain?

sluj · 01/05/2020 18:54

It won't be a proper house, most of them are like old pre fab holiday chalet type things. Come on OP, you know full well you won't get anything for £140K anywhere else in Essex let alone a so called 4 bed detached. There must be a reason.
I wouldn't even drive through Jaywick!!

Leighwalk · 01/05/2020 19:03

Love the Wigton house - so full of charm!

wonkytonkwoman · 01/05/2020 19:06

I've been to that exact place where they filmed @caramara.
Don't go. Just don't.

LakieLady · 01/05/2020 19:07

My brother lives in Jaywick, in a road not unlike the one in the pic posted upthread. The bit where he lives (possibly called Brooklands, all the streets are named after car manufacturers) is like some sort of South African township, but full of white people.

The houses are of non-standard construction. They don't have foundations, they're sort of built on brick piers. After my brother's purchase completed, he found he didn't have any water. When he checked it out, robbing bastards had nicked all the copper pipe from underneath the house. He got a grant to improve the heating and stuff, and it included the provision of a warm air heat pump thingy. It was nicked from the wall of the house when he was in hospital. He won't stay away overnight now for fear of the place getting trashed.

The council can't do anything about the roads, because the roads haven't been adopted by the council and are still "owned" by whoever built the development. They can't find out who's responsible and don't have the resources to compulsorily purchase. The whole place is in some sort of legal lacuna and that's why attempts at regeneration keep failing. When my brother bought the place, his solicitor told him that if it burned down or collapsed, he wouldn't be allowed to rebuild because of some covenant or something.

While it's not all as bad as where he is, there's fuck all there apart from a beach, a chinese takeaway, a dodgy looking pub and a couple of convenience stores. There's a lot of crime, a lot drug problems and many owners lease the houses to the council, who use them as temporary accommodation for homeless people.

And there are concerns about flooding. The sea has overtopped the sea wall a few times, and started coming up the street.

I wouldn't move there if you paid me £140k to move. It's bad enough going there for a day now and again to see my bro.

Don't do it, OP.
