To be very concerned that Boris Johnson said this

From the Guardian:
Responding to the argument that a more stringent lockdown should have been imposed sooner, he said: “Don’t forget, it’s a very very demanding thing to ask a population to do – very tough – and so I think it was completely right to make our period of lockdown coincide as far as possible with the peak of the epidemic.”

Hmm

Italy and Spain are only just starting to relax measures,we’re three weeks behind them and already people in the UK are saying that we need to come out of lockdown now.
Have you seen the latest figures? We're not three weeks behind them....we have overtaken Spain in terms of numbers of deaths and are due to overtake Italy in about a week!

AlternativePerspective · 30/04/2020 21:58

But Germany has been upheld as a country with high testing and tracing rates and have attributed their success to this fact.

So maybe the answer is in fact that there isn’t an answer or a foolproof way and that death is inevitable, and for some countries that will depend on multiple factors such as the age/state of health/density of their populations.

When we’re through this people will still die of Coronavirus. Just as thousands die of flu each year, despite there being a flu vaccine.

Worriedmum54321 · 30/04/2020 21:58

You do realise that he also stated that we went into lockdown earlier in the cycle than most other European countries? Forgot to mention that one OP? I don't mind debate, but selection of the facts with a pre-baked agenda helps no-one.
Eh? That is not relevant to my point at all. I am worried that he does not understand what caused the peak.

Spain did those things and their death rate to date has been higher than ours.

Um, no. They have had 24,543 deaths and we have had 26,771 so far according to both countries' official figures.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 30/04/2020 22:00

The flu vaccine only covered certain strains though and they guess on which will kill that year

Worriedmum54321 · 30/04/2020 22:01

think it might be a coded way of saying “be grateful I didn’t do this earlier”.

If we'd started earlier we could also have finished earlier. In fact the duration would probably have been shorter as well

polobelt · 30/04/2020 22:02

If the lockdown had have been earlier the numbers wouldn't have worked as it wasn't widespread enough for people to be worried about it enough to comply.

nauseaandnipples · 30/04/2020 22:03

I wonder what they were thinking when they didn't prevent Cheltenham taking place.

I know a group of older gentlemen who went to the races, 5 of them. 3 are now dead and 1 in hospital. All covid.

MeganBacon · 30/04/2020 22:04

I think that provided the health care system is not overwhelmed, the timing of the lockdown isn't going to make much difference over time. I think when we measure surplus deaths a year from now and compare the practices across countries, we'll see that. What we won't really know is how many deaths are caused by the economics of the lockdown. Other things will make a difference, background health of the community etc, whether effective treatment or vaccine is available, but lockdown just shifts the curve of the deaths, and possibly not the overall number.

thebridgelooksbroken · 30/04/2020 22:04

@polobelt

Poppycock. Other countries did this, NZ & Denmark as two examples. People would have complied. That's simply a lazy excuse. This clown buffoon got it VERY wrong. And as result, the death rate has been extremely high.

Worriedmum54321 · 30/04/2020 22:06

That's one theory...so you think there was no way to avoid 25,000 deaths , even when we could see the virus taking hold in China and then Italy? It might be true I agree.

I wonder what they were thinking when they didn't prevent Cheltenham taking place. That was a mad week, Cheltenham was bad enough but it wasn't the only madness that week.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 30/04/2020 22:07

Also bear in mind that Boris was very proud that on visiting Covid wards he went around shaking all hands. He wasn’t taking it seriously back then and honestly thought washing hands was enough

chomalungma · 30/04/2020 22:07

I am sure we will learn lessons from this.

But apparently it's too early to learn lessons. Hmm

polobelt · 30/04/2020 22:07

@thebridgelooksbroken I think you're talking bullshit. See how this works? Everyone has an opinion

rosie1959 · 30/04/2020 22:07

Perhaps the government should have ignored the scientific brains and asked MN as they obviously have all the answers

1forsorrow · 30/04/2020 22:08

If we'd started earlier we could also have finished earlier. In fact the duration would probably have been shorter as well I think the same.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 30/04/2020 22:08

And there’s video of ppl like Dr Hilary on tv saying that was all fine too as long as he was washing his hands.

totallyyesno · 30/04/2020 22:08

Italy locked down three weeks before us and their death rate currently is higher than ours.
No it's not. It's much higher in the UK.

thebridgelooksbroken · 30/04/2020 22:08

@polobelt

Nice try, but I backed my opinion up with examples. Why don't you?

wanderings · 30/04/2020 22:08

@NoLongerAnEasyTarget Alot of what's being said is worrying me atm. We are living under a soft fascist government and no one seems too bothered. In fact many are encouraging it
THIS! THIS! THIS! THIS! THIS! THIS! THIS! THIS! THIS! THIS! THIS! THIS! THIS! THIS! THIS! THIS! THIS! THIS! THIS! THIS! THIS! THIS! THIS! THIS! WAKE UP PEOPLE! WE ARE BEING LED LIKE SHEEP INTO 1984, WITH OUR FULL CONSENT!

We should be extremely concerned about the way the legislation was rushed through, and so far we've heard nothing about our freedoms being restored. I bet that when lockdown is lifted and we're busy celebrating, they're going to really tighten the legislation when our backs are turned, so that if (heaven forbid) a future lockdown was to happen, it would be much stricter this time.

I don't like the Thursday clapping, because it feels like applauding the lockdown, and it feels like a weird Orwellian ritual, such as the Two Minute Hate.

totallyyesno · 30/04/2020 22:10

I can't see any evidence for that being true either.

Oh for goodness sake. Another OP who can't grasp the issues involved.

Pray tell us all your highly expert views and statistical model analysis on human & economic behaviour, disease spread patterns and how pandemic peaks work.

Everyone shush. Ignore those teams of highly educated experienced researchers and field leaders advising the government, Susan from Number 12 has it solved.

polobelt · 30/04/2020 22:11

@Sparticuscaticus you're wasting your breath on here I'm afraid.
