To wonder why people aren’t more angry?

Throughout this whole crisis I have really been surprised by the level of acceptance from everyone in this country of the whole situation. I know we haven’t had much choice in the decisions made and we’re probably a very polite nation as a whole but we have been so quick to accept the arrival of a deadly virus and drastic changes to our lives, seemingly without complaint. Is no-one out there demanding to know how on earth this was all able to happen? We’ve faced the huge loss of human life worldwide and it is continuing, surely we are all entitled to get angry and demand answers? I see grieving families, children missing out on being with other children and not having an education, families being separated indefinitely, people’s mental health suffering and vulnerable people potentially at risk and I feel so frustrated and angry. If we got fired up about climate change, why not this??

Also the narrative is the slogan STay home save lives when in fact the lockdown is also killing people through domestic abuse, suicide, failure to get medical help, delayed treatment etc. Only now are people beginning to speak out about this in the news eg. That lockdown will lead to 18000 more cancer deaths.

Lav2020 · 30/04/2020 06:49

I'm angry at the people still not listening to the social distancing and only essential exercise and going out rules.
People meeting up with friends and family having jolly, in the middle of a pandemic.
Bet they wouldn't do it if they had to sign a disclaimer saying they won't be getting NHS treatment if they fall ill.
They think they are invincible, don't care about spreading it, and relying on the NHS as a safety net.

KatherineJaneway · 30/04/2020 06:51

This situation will be analyzed to the nth degree once we come out of it but there is a long way to go et. We are all just trying to get through this.

BooseysMom · 30/04/2020 06:55

But I agree with the lockdown - I don't like the lockdown, but I agree it's what had to be done. I'm fearful that if we send the schools back too early, there will be a lethal second wave.

Yes i am too. DS is year 1. I want him to go back to school as his writing has really suffered and he refuses to practice for us. He misses his friends so much. But i'm terrified of schools going back and causing a second wave. Germany is coming out of lock down and their infection rate is rising again. But we can't sit at home waiting forever for a vaccine.

ludicrouslemons · 30/04/2020 07:08

I'm angry at

Austerity weakening NHS and other state institutions especially local councils
Lack of PPE and readiness
Delay to starting lockdown
The idea we'd contemplate a no-deal brexit in all this

I'm also shocked and pissed off at the way clapping for NHS, Johnson being ill and having a baby are used to deflect criticism from the government.

The double standards in how Johnson is presented - a woman on her seventh child with a man young enough to be her son having just divorced her husband with cancer would not have been given the same treatment. Not to mention if she was 3-4 stone overweight.

I'm also angry at the way childcare has been handled in this - assuming that parents (mainly women, let's face it) will just suck up having to do two jobs at once. The ministers we see are all men, it makes a difference, I feel women have been forgotten.

heartsonacake · 30/04/2020 07:09

What good would being angry do? How would that help in any way at all?

Greenpop21 · 30/04/2020 07:09

Sad not angry. Why anger? It’s a global pandemic. There will need to be an investigation into the wet markets in China and changes will be made. That is happening or has happened. Apart from that what would anger do?

LastTrainEast · 30/04/2020 07:10

derxa you know we eat animals here too right? I think the conditions in their markets could be better, but what is it that makes them disgusting and our practises ok.

maddiemookins16mum · 30/04/2020 07:11

I am also angry at those going out......for extra bits (fed up of instant coffee etc), to B and Q, to drive through KFS and the rest. There’s a whole load of people not in lockdown.

Justanothernameonthepage · 30/04/2020 07:12

I'm pissed off with our government, their cavalier attitude and reluctance to accept what was happening in China/Italy/Spain. Their absolute balls up of basic preparedness, their decade of depriving the NHS, their reluctance to put the UK first over their own party (opting out of EU PPE Rounds multiple times). I'm annoyed that they haven't followed other countries leads in saying aid is only available to companies who paid UK taxes. I'm pissed off that they've been throwing money at pro government media, and restricting any media that questions them. I'm mildly annoyed that one day you've people clapping for the NHS and then ignoring social distancing in the shops. I'm mildly annoyed at people who seem to think I should be able to teach a 5yo, look after a 2 yo and work full time. I'm mildly annoyed at my 65yr parents who seem to think they are immune.
But I'm not annoyed at the virus, or restrictions as it's not personal and I've other things that are more urgent right now.

TheSkyWasDark · 30/04/2020 07:12

@Greenpop21 As has been mentioned, other countries handled it far better with far less time to do so.

Anger changes things. If it wasn't for anger, women and working class people wouldn't have the vote. We wouldn't have workers' rights. Or almost any rights.

How is it possible to go through life so passively?

romatheroamer · 30/04/2020 07:13

But didn't the virus start in Europe because of people travelling to a place where diet and standards of food hygiene are completely different? There are many such places and nowadays people travel all over the world to anywhere. Presumably you can't stop people travelling though after this they might begin to think twice. I do feel angry because of all the awful experiences on this thread caused by travel to places I've no desire to go to and many who have suffered couldn't afford to.

derxa · 30/04/2020 07:14

derxa you know we eat animals here too right? I think the conditions in their markets could be better, but what is it that makes them disgusting and our practises ok. We tend not to skin dogs and cats alive.

LastTrainEast · 30/04/2020 07:16

Doryhunky you claim "lockdown will lead to 18000 more cancer deaths." and that is very specific. Was it from a youtube video?

You do realise that even if it were true that the lockdown itself killed 18,000 that's a lot fewer than would have died if we had done it your way and ignored it so you could keep your 'human rights'

Crimsonnightlotus · 30/04/2020 07:19

It's easy to get angry, but it doesn't make your life easier. We really don't know anything, no one does. It's easy to blame others, but it's pointless unless we can change the situation for the better.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 30/04/2020 07:19

I’m angry that as an an island we could have closed the borders / had quarantine in place to stop it heading in.

Also at those who don’t think the lockdown rules apply to them and have seen friends, family, shopped frequently etc. This isn’t about personal risk, it’s a responsibility to the whole of society.

People meeting up with friends and family having jolly, in the middle of a pandemic. Bet they wouldn't do it if they had to sign a disclaimer saying they won't be getting NHS treatment if they fall ill

Exactly. Or had to pay for the treatment of others who catch it from their actions.

Littlemeadow123 · 30/04/2020 07:19

I am angry at Chinese government, because this is the third virus that has been caused by their horrific practices involving animals. I'm especially angry now that they have reopened the meat markets. But now isn't really the time to act on anger. We need to stay strong and get through this and then decide what's to be done after we've got through the worst of it. We need to put our foot down in some way though, otherwise this will happen again, and with the next virus, the mortality percentage might be even higher.

MsTSwift · 30/04/2020 07:20

In the words of the Everley Brothers - I’m not angry I’m just sad

LastTrainEast · 30/04/2020 07:21

derxa "We tend not to skin dogs and cats alive" but we can hoist up a cow and let it bleed to death slowly. Apparently killing it fast is upsetting to god.

A lot of objections center around them eating dogs and cats which British people think are somehow different from cows and sheep.

user1497207191 · 30/04/2020 07:22

The lack of preparation is this governments fault.

Which govt? Had all this happened in 2000 or 2005 or 2010 would we have been better prepared? Are other countries better prepared?

Lynda07 · 30/04/2020 07:23

I don't see the point of being angry, s**t happens.

AnnaNimmity · 30/04/2020 07:23

Anger is absolutely the right response to this - I am fucking angry at Boris Johnson and the UK govt, for the murderous way they've dealt with this, for the lack of PPE, for the dismantling of the health service, for the hypocrisy against nurses, who most of them voted against payrises for.

Of course its right to be angry. Without that they won't be held to account and they'll be allowed to carry on in officer, seemingly bumbling around, but in reality getting away scot free with murder.

Yes I'm angry, and you all should be too.

DanielleHirondelle · 30/04/2020 07:23

I actually think there's anger being suppressed that will come out later.

Littlemeadow123 · 30/04/2020 07:25

@LastTrainEast

We don't eat endangered species such as pangolins. We eat animals that we know are safe for human consumption. As someone else said, we don't skin dogs and cats alive. We follow very strict food hygeine practices. There are more and more free range, ethical meat production companies springing up. We have animal welfare laws whereas China doesn't have s single one. When mad cow disease appeared, we learnt our lesson and changed how we did things instead of carrying on in the same way and unleashing virus after virus.
