To wonder why people aren’t more angry?

Throughout this whole crisis I have really been surprised by the level of acceptance from everyone in this country of the whole situation. I know we haven’t had much choice in the decisions made and we’re probably a very polite nation as a whole but we have been so quick to accept the arrival of a deadly virus and drastic changes to our lives, seemingly without complaint. Is no-one out there demanding to know how on earth this was all able to happen? We’ve faced the huge loss of human life worldwide and it is continuing, surely we are all entitled to get angry and demand answers? I see grieving families, children missing out on being with other children and not having an education, families being separated indefinitely, people’s mental health suffering and vulnerable people potentially at risk and I feel so frustrated and angry. If we got fired up about climate change, why not this??

What would be the point in getting angry? Who with? What difference would being angry make to anything?

Justaboy · 30/04/2020 00:08

Its nature, it could have broken out anytime and anywhere the last real bad one was the 1918 Flu pandemic 50 or more MILLION dead!

If that happened again we would'nt really be in that much a better positioin than what we are in now! The only good thing is that most have an accquired imunity but thats not to say it couldt happen.

Anyways least we got ontop of the Black Death plauge its still around here and there and Smallpox not niace either!

Greysparkles · 30/04/2020 00:08

The british are angry at another country causing them pain and anguish and loss of freedom and decimating the economy??
Oh the irony

Ah yes I forgot that people alive now are n out allowed to be angry at things happening right now because years ago people who aren't here now did terrible things in the past.

Now apply that logic to everyday life. You're now not allowed to be angry at anyone, anything, anywhere. Ever.

catinasplat · 30/04/2020 00:10

We are at about day 60 of potentially a 540 to 720 day event. I think you are going to suffer horribly if you sustain your anger for all of the period of the virulence of this infection

I don't agree. Of course being angry ALL the time won't help, but supressing anger and rage at this situation is not healthy and we all need to be able to freely express how we feel.

ThrowingGoodAfterBad · 30/04/2020 00:10

Icepinkeskimo I'm sorry for your loss.

7Days · 30/04/2020 00:12

LilacTree1 would you go and peddle your snide little remarks elsewhere, please. Perhaps into the mirror.
This constant conspiracy skirting bullshit ... have you a YouTube channel you are trying to monetise, or are you just a useful idiot?

Chloemol · 30/04/2020 00:12

What’s the point of getting angry? It’s a wasted emotion, and at the moment we are all focusing on getting through this. That said I am cross with China, who were aware of this far longer than they say. I also want to know why these virus’s seem to start there and what are they going to do to ensure it doesn’t happen again

malificent7 · 30/04/2020 00:13

I am more angry about climate change tbh as it will do a lot more damage than this and it is our fault.

catinasplat · 30/04/2020 00:13

I'm also furious that the government are still insisting that there will be no extension to the transition period, it's as though they want to chuck us completely off a cliff.

Theflushedzebra · 30/04/2020 00:14

7Days - I second that.

Hadenoughfornow · 30/04/2020 00:15

I am angry at a few things - PPE and testing being 2.
I am sad and upset at the number of people dying.

I am not yet angry - we will see.

If we get to the end of the pandemic and our deaths (Covid and non Covid) are higher than all other European countries) then I will be angry.

But at the moment I get the impression we are not comparing like with like.

malificent7 · 30/04/2020 00:18

If you think this us bad wait untill flooding due to global warming...but noone gives a shiny shit as it means we will have to drastically change our lifestyles, stop travelling and overconsuming as much and wind our necks in...oh wait!

ThrowingGoodAfterBad · 30/04/2020 00:20

why these virus’s seem to start there I'm guessing: big continent. Lots of varied wildlife. Contact between them and humans. Climate might be a contributing factor in the monsoon belt.

LilacTree1 · 30/04/2020 00:20

Bit baffled by posters who think I’m a conspiracy theorist. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Anger can be quite useful. The thought I might one day be able to go on a demonstration- never done that - is helpful to me now.

LilacTree1 · 30/04/2020 00:22

Malifcent “ If you think this us bad wait untill flooding due to global warming...but noone gives a shiny shit as it means we will have to drastically change our lifestyles, stop travelling and overconsuming as much and wind our necks in...oh wait!”

I completely understand the earth fighting back but I think I have tiny carbon footprint so it’s kind of a pisser.

Nanalisa60 · 30/04/2020 00:22

I’m angry about the amount of people that will lose there jobs and maybe home over the next year, we will be paying for this for the next decade if not more!!

I’m angry At the amount of money that has been spent on nightingale hospitals that are not being used.

LilacTree1 · 30/04/2020 00:24

Catinasplat “ Of course being angry ALL the time won't help, but supressing anger and rage at this situation is not healthy and we all need to be able to freely express how we feel.”

Yes. It’s good to vent. And a discussion board is a good place for it. You can wander off and do something else when you need it or get understanding when you need it.

Theflushedzebra · 30/04/2020 00:26

My DH thinks his company will change forever. They are a US company (with offices in the UK and worldwide) that started the working from home 2 weeks before the govt told us to.

They are an excellent company - they are fortunate that just about everyone can WFH though. But they really took the lead in stopping their employees spreading the virus. They closed all their offices.

But DH has said he doesn't think he'll ever do the full time commute into London again now, maybe just one or two times a week when this is all over. He thinks no more jetsetting around the world for meetings now - they've proved it's just not necessary. They can do it by conference/video call.

This is a great lesson in what we would need to do to combat climate change. And yes, the economy will need to take a hit to stop climate change. That is a fact.

blueshoes · 30/04/2020 00:28

I agree with 7Days

Feelings of anger are justified to the extent that you feel what you feel. But lashing out is childish, irrational and achieves nothing. Just looking for someone to blame, when actually anger adds to the problem (virus) and not a solution.

Justaboy · 30/04/2020 00:29

I’m angry At the amount of money that has been spent on nightingale hospitals that are not being used.

Good that they aren't being used:)

However if this was worse you'd be much much more angry if they wern't there!

Neves7 · 30/04/2020 00:30

Might as well be angry at the moon. It is enviable that this would eventually happen. Virus cross species boundaries all the time. Even measles for example is thought to have originated in cattle thousands of years ago.

This one is almost a perfect storm - it fairly highly contagious (could be worse), has a long and variable incubation period and variable initial features that make it hard to distinguish from milder illnesses or seasonal allergies and a fairly low fatality rate (doesn’t kill the hosts too quickly).

Increasingly accessible travel has made the perfect set up for a pandemic.

Yes wet markets are a bad idea particularly with known virus hosts such as bats but we already knew this and did nothing. Yes governments have fumbled this badly but this should be no surprise to anyone. It’s like global warming in that sense - everyone with any sense knows it’s happening but insufficient effort is made to prevent it.

Also like global warming the potential methods of prevention are generally seen as unpalatable to the majority. Maybe now this will be easier?

BilboBercow · 30/04/2020 00:31

Sustained anger is unhealthy and doesn't achieve anything. This could just have easily happened in many countries around the world. Lots of places have wet markets, lots of places eat exotic animals and keep animals in confined, poor conditions in close proximity to people. Disease is natural and we've known for a long time another pandemic was coming.
What do you want answers to.

Theflushedzebra · 30/04/2020 00:31

I'm certainly glad none of the UK are "angry" like the US protesters waving confederate flags (and Nazi flags!) at the moment. They're horrific.

The worst we've got is Toby Young ranting on twitter. That's fine - I don't think anyone likes him anyway.

Paintedmaypole · 30/04/2020 00:34

I am surprised that anger is an emotion that people are experiencing in relation to this situation. I am far from being a fan of the current government but they are doing their best to handle an out of the ordinary situation. Who or what are you angry with? I am sad that people are very ill and some are dying in a very unpleasant way. I am sad for the bereaved. Being angry at a virus is like being angry at tne weather.

PyongyangKipperbang · 30/04/2020 00:36

Whats the point?

It wont change anything, it wont save lives, it wont make me able to go back to work (pub manager, see you......who knows???!!) or my 2 middle kids able to do their GCSE and A Levels.

There will be time for questions later, lets just get through this first.
