To wonder why people aren’t more angry?

Throughout this whole crisis I have really been surprised by the level of acceptance from everyone in this country of the whole situation. I know we haven’t had much choice in the decisions made and we’re probably a very polite nation as a whole but we have been so quick to accept the arrival of a deadly virus and drastic changes to our lives, seemingly without complaint. Is no-one out there demanding to know how on earth this was all able to happen? We’ve faced the huge loss of human life worldwide and it is continuing, surely we are all entitled to get angry and demand answers? I see grieving families, children missing out on being with other children and not having an education, families being separated indefinitely, people’s mental health suffering and vulnerable people potentially at risk and I feel so frustrated and angry. If we got fired up about climate change, why not this??

happy 🤣 you've just proved that my earlier assessment was correct.

ChainsawBear · 30/04/2020 14:17

It is their job to prepare for every eventuality , to risk assess to the nth degree and to have steps that swing into action as soon as that particular risk takes place. If there's a flood, an earthquake, a complete power outage, etc, there will be a risk assessment in place.

There are limits, though, to what that person will be permitted and, most importantly, funded, to do. Implicit in that risk assessment are estimates of what may happen, and their likelihood, which are often wrong. Companies get caught out in their scenario planning all the time, constantly. That's why we had an economic crash in 2008, it's why 9/11 took place, it's why Deepwater Horizon exploded. No country is immune; look at what happened to Japan after the 2011 tsunami and earthquake. Reality has a nasty habit of being difficult to predict. And politics - in the sense of party and government politics and also in the sense of the priorities of people in charge of large organisations - always, always plays a role.

Again, I'm not saying there weren't mistakes and shortcomings, but this is not like a company having failed to do, say, basic flood preparedness.

Frangipanini · 30/04/2020 14:23

There is no need for a physical war, but we need to now vote with our feet and think more about where we spend our money. We enable them by buying from them.

We need to focus on our own country for a while and let others get on with sorting themselves out. We are going to have mass unemployment and knock on effects of this throughout our society. It's time to focus on our own for a while and make sure our own companies survive by supporting them where we can.

Hingeandbracket · 30/04/2020 14:26

I hope trump goes to war with china our government doesn't have the balls to do it.

WTAF? This has to be a wind up.
It's not about "balls" no-one can afford to do anything other than look the other way in relation to many things, including Human Rights issues in China because they make most of our stuff and we owe the bazillions in debt.

mrsbyers · 30/04/2020 14:31

‘Allowed to happen’ it’s just how it is , no one can predict such events

happyandsingle · 30/04/2020 14:31

So should we just ignore the fact that china started a pandemic that has cost lives, economy, mental health?

happyandsingle · 30/04/2020 14:33

Or shut our mouths because as some poster put it they make loads of our stuff?

Frangipanini · 30/04/2020 14:43

Our governments will do nothing, but we can. If you boycott stuff made in China, companies will have to get it elsewhere, like they have had to change their suppliers and materials when we held their feet to the fire over plastic and palm oil.

JediJim · 30/04/2020 14:45

With regards to Trump- be careful what you wish for. I wouldn’t be surprised by anything that man would say or do.

TheClootieDumplin · 30/04/2020 14:47

I hope trump goes to war with china our government doesn't have the balls to do it

Apart from this being a very silly suggestion - the fact is the Chinese would win any war with the west.

JediJim · 30/04/2020 14:48

Boycotting Chinese good won’t happen I’m afraid. They produce too much. Cheap productions.
I remember seeing on MN some years ago about a poster emailing the then CEO of Tesco in regards to what the Chinese were doing to animals ( Tesco were trading with China on something but can’t remember what) . The CEO didn’t bother replying.

TheClootieDumplin · 30/04/2020 14:49

We need to focus on our own country for a while and let others get on with sorting themselves out.

Yes.

Paintedmaypole · 30/04/2020 14:52

I hope Trump goes to war with China How exactly would that improve things?? If there is a sensible way of campaigning for animal welfare I would like someone who knows about it to post in order to do what we can.

Justanotherlurker · 30/04/2020 14:53

brassbrass · 30/04/2020 14:55

I'm with you frangipani

The masses have a lot of power if only they new how to use it effectively. Angry with china? Don't buy their products. Angry with the likes of Philip Green and Branson disposing of staff and asking for handouts when they sit on billions? Stop fucking putting more into their coffers.

5 weeks of not buying his overpriced cheaply made tat means Green has wrapped up two of his businesses. Imagine what would happen if it was a permanent change? These people are parasitic and our government just allows them to continue but will harass ordinary self employed people to suicide.

boylovesmeerkats · 30/04/2020 14:55

Well, I think you have to be careful because we're part of the problem. Globalisation, capitalism, consumerism, all the stuff we enjoy here in the UK is a result of disastrous environmental and human conditions. It's those conditions that make transmission of these viruses more common.

The origins need to be discovered but our behaviours and values (cheap stuff, international travel, economic factors) have spread it.

brassbrass · 30/04/2020 14:57

jedijim then you boycott Tesco. You hold people to account. En masse it is possible.

Justanotherlurker · 30/04/2020 15:05

If you think its simple to just boycott Chinese made products you are going to struggle to find a lot of products, and god help you if you require any form of new computer/phone.

It's a niave view point to think that companies will switch suppliers when in most cases China is the only supplier. You don't understand the Chinese mindset if you think the consumer power is that strong in a globalised economy.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 30/04/2020 15:08

Because anger is funnelling your energy into a cul de sac. It has no where to go, all it will do is build up until you are drowning in it.

What we can do here and now is to try and limit the destructive force of what is happening by following guidelines and practicing self care to the best of our ability. This by necessity will mean accepting the current position as Something out of your control. There’s no point battling the somewhat inevitable as it will obviously lead to failure.

Once this is all over there will be time to address all the less immediate questions to try and stop this happening again and,if appropriate, holding people responsible for their actions.

brassbrass · 30/04/2020 15:09

It's utterly naive to say it can't be done. You start with easy obvious products. Work your way through until alternatives are available. Being defeatist is part of the apathy disease. The point every consumer doing it where they can will have impact.

Dipi79 · 30/04/2020 15:26

I do feel angry about it and I haven't exactly submitted to all this graciously, but anger can be a very destructive emotion. So, I choose to read, meditate, stay active, help others where possible, look after my family, challenge where appropriate. I'm not staying locked in anger, as it would take me to a dark space

AnnaNimmity · 30/04/2020 15:30

Look, the current govt - Boris Johnson and his cronies are getting away wtih their absolutely crap, herd immunity etc, first reponse. They failed to lock down early and clearly enough, they failed to test and as a result many many many more people have died than needed to.

They have failed to deliver PPE. They have failed to protect care homes, NHS staff and vulnerable people. They are failing now to provide leadership and clarity.

Their failure makes me angry. Very angry. Someone upthread actually uses the words (when saying they aren't angry) "shit happens". Well no. This is deaths. Needless deaths that could and should have been avoided. We are the worse in Europe and second worse in the world. It's shocking, horrendous and the govt needs to be held to account.

I am not angry about being locked down. I am not even angry about someone eating a bat in China. I am angry at my government and it's shameful reaction to this wholly forseeable event. We could see what was happening across the world. They didn't take the right action, and they are continuing not to. Yes I'm angry.

AnnaNimmity · 30/04/2020 15:31

(in my house, in my family, I'm not angry. I'm doing my best for my children and my job and trying to see the best in it all - I am angry at the govt and will use that anger to try to get them held to account). Not all anger is bad.

bluemoon77 · 30/04/2020 15:47

No they wouldn’t. I hope it never happens but they haven’t got anything like what America has in terms of weapons.

Justanotherlurker · 30/04/2020 16:15

Look, the current govt - Boris Johnson and his cronies are getting away wtih their absolutely crap, herd immunity etc, first reponse.

It was actually Cummings who wanted to initiate a lock down and the scientists who where pushing for the herd immunity, it still is pretty much what every country is going for anyway.

They failed to lock down early and clearly enough, they failed to test and as a result many many many more people have died than needed to.

We are an intenational hub, as of yet no one can say for certain if a lockdown earlier would have worked any differently, Germany have been great on their contact tracing and had to go back on their easing so there really is no right or wrong way yet.

They have failed to deliver PPE. They have failed to protect care homes, NHS staff and vulnerable people.

So much like every other similar populated country then.

German doctors protest lack of protective equipment by posing naked

TWell no. This is deaths. Needless deaths that could and should have been avoided. We are the worse in Europe and second worse in the world. It's shocking, horrendous and the govt needs to be held to account.

We are in a middle of a pandemic, and a quick google will show we are not the worst in europe when you consider population density.

The government will be held to account, just the same as every other countries will, once we are out the other side, to pretend there was a simple solution to this is coming from nothing more than you do not like the shade of tie that is in power.
