Captain Tom - What's the fuss about?

Okay I am not knocking Captain Tom at all, he is a brilliant brilliant man.

Although AIBU to wonder why our country has gone bananas over him? All he did was walk laps of his garden, people fundraise everyday and do a lot more! Think of all the marathon runners!

Whenever he is interviewed I think he also seems a bit confused why everyone is making so much fuss too!

I just don't get why our country has become obsessed with him??!

OP posts:

Ok but the NHS shouldn't need to be propped up by charities! That's the disgrace. Why is it even in that situation.

Johng133 · 30/04/2020 16:17

@brassbrass ok your posts are a disgrace and you are an embarrassment. The vast majority of people posting on this thread don’t share your sad opinion

Johng133 · 30/04/2020 16:18

@Treescaper he raised the money for NHS charities not the NHS

VenusTiger · 30/04/2020 16:18

He is reminding us that he's lived and seen 100 years of Britain and yet he is still helping others even at this grand age.

brassbrass · 30/04/2020 16:19

You've got nothing to say John except look for a bunfight. I'm not negative but I am bored of you.

brassbrass · 30/04/2020 16:20

Seems you can't read either lol.

Lalala205 · 30/04/2020 16:20

Should people not be allowed to donate their own money as they choose OP? Maybe you can 'tell them' how to better spend it 😉

Alsohuman · 30/04/2020 16:20

It’s the nice to haves brass. The NHS is underfunded for sure and so strapped it can’t even cover necessities. The charities help furnish decent staff rooms, hotels for relatives of long term patients, stuff like that. I can’t get angry that the NHS can’t pay for the kind of things the charities fund.

TriangleBingoBongo · 30/04/2020 16:21

Who says he had to? He chose to.

Johng133 · 30/04/2020 16:25

@brassbrass as is everyone who has seen your posts today. What do the NHS workers feel about Captain Tom and the Charities that have benefited by 30 million. There thoughts and best wishes are what we will all remember.Unlike your pathetic posts.

isabellerossignol · 30/04/2020 16:25

@ isabellerossignol you appear to have omitted the 30 million his efforts have raised for NHS staff

Eh? Omitted it from where? Or what?

Lalala205 · 30/04/2020 16:26

Also what's with the snidey mean little comments of 'Oooh his family pushed it, he only walked laps in a garden'... Have you raised 30million? No? Well fuck off then

Alsohuman · 30/04/2020 16:28

Wow, this has got weird all of a sudden.

brassbrass · 30/04/2020 16:28

I can’t get angry that the NHS can’t pay for the kind of things the charities fund.

No and I'm not angry at the NHS but why when there is such an opportunity with so much positive publicity about what they do are people allowing themselves to be sedated by Tom stories. This is the time to get the govt by the balls and demand changes. Whilst Tom and the clapping is keeping everyone busy there isn't the same volume in terms of pressure being placed on the government. Switch energy to achieving long term changes instead.

Alsohuman · 30/04/2020 16:31

There does seem to be a feeling that with Johnson having received excellent NHS treatment himself and with the birth of his son, the NHS will be a real priority in the next few years brass. Let’s hope so.

brassbrass · 30/04/2020 16:31

alsohuman I think home school just finished 🤣

PotterHarryWitch · 30/04/2020 16:32

Wow. I'm pretty savage but even I think YABU. You having a bad day?

Johng133 · 30/04/2020 16:32

@brassbrass gotcha I knew your comments were politically motivated all along. Are you a momentum member still wondering why Jeremy lost the election?

Moomin12345 · 30/04/2020 16:33

Why are people obsessed with talentless celebrities and the royalty? Of the three, captain Tom is definitely most deserving. People just like occupying their minds with something. I can't stop thinking of him as major Tom, tho.

Johng133 · 30/04/2020 16:36

@alsohuman @brassbrass 😂😂 our budding political activists who have attempted and failed miserably to spin the Captain Tom story.A couple of very sore losers

brassbrass · 30/04/2020 16:38

Well poirot better look out with you on the loose! You've surmised that because I talk of holding the current govt (which has repeatedly screwed the NHS) to account that makes me a Corbyn fan? How many GCSEs are you hoping to take?

Lalala205 · 30/04/2020 16:40

I'm also amused by OP's lament of 'think of all the marathon runners!'.... I've ran a marathon, it wasn't that big a deal, I raised £647..... Nobody cares 🤣 The difference is I was 24, fit and healthy, and running for fun. Tom is 99 and probably knackered after his laps, so it's no less a feat.

Johng133 · 30/04/2020 16:41

@brassbrass😂😂 oh how the truth hurts

Lalala205 · 30/04/2020 16:41

*was 99

damnthatanxiety · 30/04/2020 16:42

OP and KmoKmo and anyone else who seem baffled - you COMPLETELY miss the point. It is not that he walked up and down his garden. Lets face it, most sponsored events are in themselves completely pointless. The big deal with Captain Tom is that HE GALVANISED A NATION in times of difficulty. He brought people together. He made people feel that the little guy can indeed make a difference. He made people feel like they wanted to put their hand in their pocket. Yes, anyone can fundraise but do they all create the narrative CT did? No. They don't.
