Captain Tom - What's the fuss about?

Okay I am not knocking Captain Tom at all, he is a brilliant brilliant man.

Although AIBU to wonder why our country has gone bananas over him? All he did was walk laps of his garden, people fundraise everyday and do a lot more! Think of all the marathon runners!

Whenever he is interviewed I think he also seems a bit confused why everyone is making so much fuss too!

I just don't get why our country has become obsessed with him??!

It sounds like you need him.

Easilyanxious · 30/04/2020 19:56

Does it matter why ? He raised loads and has done amazingly
People warmed to him obviously and he was doing for an important cause at the time we are in
But in reality why does it matter why it's gone the way it has ?

Easilyanxious · 30/04/2020 19:58

Not sure too many individuals have raised that amount either

DameXanaduBramble · 30/04/2020 20:09

@thedogscollar. You sound deranged.

Thedogscollar · 30/04/2020 20:13

Damexanadubramble You are like a spoiled child resorting to name calling.

DameXanaduBramble · 30/04/2020 20:14

Oh get back to your OK mag and Loose women, you dolt.

Thedogscollar · 30/04/2020 20:16

Now you are the deranged one. You sound like a troll. Noticed you are spouting off on the other CT thread on here. You are pathetic.

DameXanaduBramble · 30/04/2020 20:17

Are you stalking me?

DameXanaduBramble · 30/04/2020 20:18

Been here 15 years - have you?

TabbyMumz · 30/04/2020 20:25

"Not sure too many individuals have raised that amount either"
Probably havent, but he still did the same thing. I'd he didnt work any harder getting all that money than if he'd only got a small amount. It was just by chance and the timing of it.

Thedogscollar · 30/04/2020 20:34

xanadu ffs you started this by calling me deranged told me to get back to my OK mag and Loose women.
I couldn't give one shit how long you have been here it's a bloody public forum not some private club. You sound like a chavvy teenager with that comment. Fucking grow up. Here have a Biscuit having a bloody lorry load.

DameXanaduBramble · 01/05/2020 07:23

You still banging on? I cant argue with stupid so I’ll leave you to it.

Oh - And the length I’d been here was to counter your troll accusation, which isn’t allowed here. Just FYI.

Thedogscollar · 01/05/2020 12:36

You really are a nasty piece of work aren't you. If anyone is stupid and very judgemental it's you dear with your ludicrous get back to your OK mag and Loose women comment. That really showed you up for what you are. Fifteen years of Mumsnet has obviously made you into a keyboard bully. Well done you hope it makes you feel good about yourself.

Viviennemary · 01/05/2020 12:40

Because I think it proves what one ordinary elderly gentleman can do. Even I thought his story was inspiring.

TabbyMumz · 01/05/2020 15:24

"Because I think it proves what one ordinary elderly gentleman can do. Even I thought his story was inspiring"
But...he did just walk round his garden on the advice of his gp. Dont get me wrong, I think he's lovely, but he's not done anything physically astronomical, it's just all timing and the press needing a story.

DeeCeeCherry · 01/05/2020 21:54

He doesn't have to do anything astronomical does he? So what if he only walked around his garden? If he'd managed a bigger gesture, more than that, the cats bumfaces who likely do fuck all to aim to make a difference would still have found a way to complain about it.

All you miseries - have a 🍋it'll help to maintain bitch mode

TabbyMumz · 02/05/2020 10:12

"He doesn't have to do anything astronomical does he? "

No he doesnt. And he didnt. That's my point. It wasnt extraordinary, it was normal. He wasnt an inspiration, or the most wonderful man in the world like some have said. He was simply a very nice man, who'se family set up a charity page on just giving, the timing was just right, the press got involved, and it snowballed. Its brilliant timing, and brilliant it made all that money... but...he is not some sort of saint.
" the cats bumfaces who likely do fuck all to aim to make a difference "

You dont know that. Lots of people who do charitable things, keep quiet about it. I hate the way, if you say something about a situation....its "well what have you done"? "What have you ever raised for charity?" Well you will never know, because I dont go charitable things to raise my profile, I keep quiet about it.

Paintedmaypole · 02/05/2020 10:20

FOMO?? Can't work out what it means

dementedpixie · 02/05/2020 10:24

Googled it - Fear Of Missing Out

SpilltheTea · 02/05/2020 10:31

Positivity on MN must be shot down and burned.

Alsohuman · 02/05/2020 10:39

So true, it’s dementor heaven at the moment. The level of world weary cynicism is as depressing as the lockdown masochism.

Potatobug · 02/05/2020 10:47

I don’t understand the fuss either. Nice old guy, yes okay. But how do you raise so much money by walking around in a garden? I am always surprised when people raise whole fortunes by patting 50 dogs a day for two weeks or by walking the countryside in their underpants.

eaglejulesk · 02/05/2020 10:48

I would far rather admire someone like Captain Tom than some celebrity pretending to care about the fashionable cause of the week!

derxa · 02/05/2020 10:49

Well you will never know, because I dont go charitable things to raise my profile, I keep quiet about it. Grin Like Smashie and Nicey

Gingertam · 02/05/2020 10:56

It was a lovely gesture, but I thought it was ridiculous when people were calling for him to be knighted.
