I caveat by saying I don't know if he will or not!!!

Given the current situation, I think his paternity leave needs to wait

Bojo has got about 11 kids already anyway & is a notoriously absent father- the kind of behaviour that normally gets men slated on mumsnet - this sentimentality over his latest child is kind of 🤮

I’d be happy for him to take a very long paternity leave

1981m · 29/04/2020 18:07

I think he shouldn't take it at this time after so
Much time off already. This is exceptional circumstances, it is an emergency, his country needs him present. He chose the role of PM and unfortunately that involves sacrifices. Others are sacrificing their lives, missing their babies being born, not being there when family members die, missing funerals. He needs to make sacrifices too, he must have known that's what the role involved.

1981m · 29/04/2020 18:08

He brought Brexit upon himself, can't give him a break over that.

steppemum · 29/04/2020 18:12

Normally, I would say of course he should take it, no matter what, as I believe that parents shoudl have that right, and the leader taking it sets a precedent for others.

But right now we are in the middle of an International crisis, and when you sign up to lead the country, you do have to sacrifce some things.
I am not a Boris fan, but I recognise that over the last few weeks, we have suffered from a lack of leadership, and he needs to be at the help. He needs to get back into the role. Maybe if he hadn't been ill then it wouldn't have been so critical, but that is what you get when you choose to be PM.

(I was going to say being ill wasn't his fault, but as he was shaking hands with people in a hospital where there was Covid-19, going against his own guidelines, then I'll pass on that one.)

merrymouse · 29/04/2020 18:14

One would hope that generally the mother would start to feel a bit better after 2 weeks though, and be less physically debilitated if she had a difficult birth or c-section.

Or she might feel absolutely fine now, and feel awful after 6 weeks of sleepless nights. It's not as though he won't be there at all, or as though she will have to cook or look after other children.

Uygop · 29/04/2020 18:17

If she needs someone with her for some reason he can pay for a highly qualified and experienced doula, who will be much more use than he would be. He should be running the country. First on his to do list should be sacking Dominic Cummings.

I thought JRM was hilarious earlier banging on about how BoJo has joined some exclusive club now that he's had his sixth child, conveniently forgetting that he probably passed that milestone two or three gestations ago Grin

RainMustFall · 29/04/2020 18:23

Aww shame, you must be desperately disappointed he isn't taking leave. You'll have to find something else to bitch about.

No how fucking dare he nearly die get back to work miss Prime Ministers Questions attending the birth of his child and then voluntarily forego Paternity Leave. The bastard.

See, I know you're being sarcastic here but bizarrely that's exactly what I think without e sarcasm. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Sh05 · 29/04/2020 18:29

I just hope Carrie and the baby are ok and the virus hasn't harmed baby in any way. We know so little about covid19, they must be very anxious.
Whatever we think of Boris Johnson, she is a first time mum and I wish her all the best

Pumpkinpie1 · 29/04/2020 18:32

He wasn’t there for his wife who was undergoing cancer treatment whilst he was having an affair, so why would he be there for his mistress & latest offspring?

Rosebel · 29/04/2020 18:34

I feel a bit sorry for Carrie. She's just had a baby and her husband has to go back to work. She can't have any family or friends round, that has to be tough especially given what she's already been through .
Whatever Boris did with regards to paternity leave would be wrong. He can't seen to win. Shouldn't we just be glad mum and baby are well?

iolaus · 29/04/2020 18:36

If this is, as suspected, a premature baby and the baby is needing time in special care then it would make sense for him to delay paternity leave, especially at the moment when fathers can't visit a new mother in hospital and only one parent can be with a child (baby) in hospital, and be with them both when they get home

He really doesn't need to take paternity leave.

What's he going to do? All he'd be doing is hanging around whilst the baby's mother rests and the maternity nurse does everything else that the mother doesn't feel up to doing.

As pp said, it's not like she's stuck in a tower block cooking meals and looking after other children.

She really won't be left to cope on her own.

User202004 · 29/04/2020 18:38

No he shouldn't take it. I'm sure plenty of key workers aren't able to take paternity leave atm (and most likely not just delayed but forgone entirely), my military husband wasn't able to take it when our eldest was born, we are going through one of the biggest crises of our time, the PM, now recovered, should be at the helm.

Tonemeth · 29/04/2020 18:41

Nah give him it and let nippy sweetie take over for a bit.

merrymouse · 29/04/2020 18:42

Agree User202004 - plenty of men miss out on their children's births completely because they are serving their country, whereas the PM will be working from home.

notalwaysalondoner · 29/04/2020 18:47

It’s literally the most important job in the country, no way should he be taking it right now.

I think a lot of people just don’t appreciate what it’s like being incredibly senior in a crisis - your job does come first. I work with a lot less important people than the PM in and outside of government who are very senior and they wouldn’t think twice about delaying it. It’s a pretty modern concept as well and so culturally Boris wouldn’t have had it for his first child so will be less bothered about insisting on it now.

I can't be the only one on MN who knows someone in RL who has, erm, known Johnson
