Blandmum · 16/09/2007 18:30

I've seen that on stickers in France, 'If you take my disabled space, please take my diability as well'

Peachy · 16/09/2007 18:33

Not seen that thread

'copure some of us get the disability and none of the eprks (HOW long does a DLA tribunal take?????)

jambuttie · 16/09/2007 18:34

wish someone would take the disability from my LO's but do get your meaning

tortoiseSHELL · 16/09/2007 18:44

to be fair 2shoes, I think parking and toilets are entirely different issues - the issue with the toilets is that everyone should have a right to be able to access a toilet safely. At the moment this is not possible with a buggy, because it would necessitate leaving your child unattended in a buggy in a busy public place. The fault is with the toilet providers, who should provide suitable facilities. I don't think it is a 'perk' to be able to go to the toilet.

Parking - there is absolutely no excuse for using disabled spaces without the badge. Non-disabled people can just park further away.

That's what I think anyway.

Ohhhh is this how am I supposed to go to the loo on motorway 'use disabled' - how very dare you?

Peachy · 16/09/2007 18:47

Noooooooo! we do not need this again! I know its raining and theres crap on TV but

(I used a disabled toilet myself last week and felt immensely guilty, but the ladies was closed and I was throwing up (as I usually am). And you know what- after all those 'well there's never anyone outside' posts- there bloody was! Some lady with crutches- and I felt like a complete shit (although I suppose ahd she to wade through tyhe sick to access the loo she'd have been no better of, which was the alternative- bloody ASDA toilets).

fillyjonk · 16/09/2007 19:27

a dla tribunal takes around 50 minutes, irrc...

Peachy · 16/09/2007 19:30

Yes but we're at the well we've told them we're not accepting them stage..... they get 12 weeks I think, have had 5, to respond

gess · 16/09/2007 19:31

Ah I can understand why the loo stuff grates if you're still changing a teenagers nappy. Bet you'd gladly swap that part of the disability with the nearest passer by 2shoes DS1 tries to drag me into the mens.

Gobbledigook · 16/09/2007 19:32

I don't feel guilty about using a disabled toilet - the toilet is designed so that a disabled person can use it easily but imo, if it's free and there is nobody else around and the others are full, there is no issue in an able bodied person using it.

How long are you in there? 2 minutes tops.

Parking spaces are another issue.

gess · 16/09/2007 19:33

Incidentally- slight thread hijack to ask whether the disabled loos are any use at all for changing a young persons/adults nappy. the changing tables at ds1's school look far sturdier and I've often pondered when out and about. Must be very difficult to go out if they're not.

Peachy · 16/09/2007 19:36

Never tried with ds3, always think they look as if he wriggled (he does, he ahtes having a change) then he'd have a big fall.... tend to use floor atm, but guess sooner or later will have to deal with a messy one (He only does a poo once every week or so, and ytyou can see it coming)

littlerach · 16/09/2007 19:37

Gess, no they aren't.
Dss has sometimes had an accident when out and about, and DH has had to change him on the floor of the disabled loos. With the wheelchair in there too.
It is as he gets older that it becomes even harder.

tortoiseSHELL · 16/09/2007 19:37

I think there's a weight limit gess, but can't remember what it is.

gess · 16/09/2007 20:21

Gosh that's difficult. Most of the young people I know in nappies have a learning disability rather than physical disability so it's not such a problem, as you can change them standing up. How crazy to have disabled loos that don't cater for a whole group.

I now remember that I have seen large roll up changing mats in the Fledglings catalogue. Presumably they can be used on the floor (if the wheelchair fits as well and the floor isn't flooded ). God what a nightmare; hats off to anyone dealing with that.

mamazon · 16/09/2007 20:28

if something is designed and tehrefore designated to teh use of disabled people then you have no real reason to use it.

i know very few places where there are disabled facilities but no ordinary public use facilities.

if you use them then yes you should feel guilty.

Rhubarb · 16/09/2007 20:31

I've used disabled toilets with my kids. Most of them are not just for disabled people, they also double up as changing rooms. I would never leave my child in a buggy with all my shopping outside a public toilets cubicle whilst I was inside.

I have never parked in a disabled spot and never would.

Just negotiating a pram around town is bad enough, it must be hell if you are in a wheelchair. Some shops would be practically out of bounds!

Peachy · 16/09/2007 20:32

Honestly? you think I should feel guilty when the only unlocked loo due to vandalism is a disbale done, and I have a severe vomiting condition?

Well I did, but I don't think I should have, had I been in there with the boys or waiting I woudln't have minded in that situation one jot.

mamazon · 16/09/2007 20:33

my dad is in a wheelchair and yes there are a great number of shops that are totally out of bounds.
